It is also helpful to block off landscaping beds. I ran the twisted wire from the perimeter over to the landscaping beds near the house. The signal cancels out with the twisted, I found the closer the wires are to each other, the less signal output. I placed the wires about 1 ft apart around the beds so that it doesn't take too much in the yard space.
Wow wonderful!!underground fence is really a great innovation to keep our pets safe & playful!!!
Thank you very much very helpful video, I have one question, can this system be used to only block off a driveway? The rest of my yard and house already has a physical fence oh, just wondering if I could run a straight line block off the driveway
We had a PetSafe in ground fence for years and it worked great. Dogs are like kids..all different and one of mine is so sensitive, all she has to do is hear the warning beep and I have to give her PeptoBismol for a week. My terrier would fly through the barrier grinning and flip me off on her way out.
When I called PetSafe to inquire about returning Dingo's collar, she reminded me that I could set the correction area for ten feet wide! That worked like a charm. Our problem now is the fact that apparently lightning took it out this last summer.
Something to consider...if you can, avoid installing it close to trees if you live in an area prone to lightning. It can hit the tree and follow a root for quite a ways.
"My terrier would fly through the barrier grinning and flip me off on her way out." This cracked me up so bad. Thanks for the advice about the trees.
I get the feeling there's an undercurrent of hostility between these two dudes.
If there wasn't....there is after this comment 😂
Very helpful. Do you need to put wire into the transmitter. I see it has a red and black ports for wires. Thanks!
Hi, thanks for the info.My question is how far above an entry "door to porch" would you suggest the wire needs to be for dog to have access without correction saying the system (petsafe stubborn dog) is set on max? Doorway entry to porch is approx. 8' H 36" W.Situation is similar to your patio door setup.
Thanks guys, you both answered several questions I had.
Just FYI if you go under the concrete, depending on the size of the wire it may not transmit to the collar. We have used. Census in our previous houses, to keep the dogs away from the horses and out of the street. In our last house we had to go under a root of a big oak tree. It was only buried about 10 to 12 in under the ground but in that spot the colors would not pick up the signal in a sweet turned it way up. But we didn't want to turn it all the way up, because that closed up some of the narrow or areas along the side of the house making it impossible from the front to the back yard
Great video guys. I'm sitting on my porch about to install. Thanks for the info.
Same !
Thanks guys, that was helpful! Hope I have very little trouble installing my fence :)
Thanks. This helped greatly as I had no manual.
Appreciate the helpful video! We are starting this project tomorrow. In regard to the back patio door, instead of bringing the wire up vertically to the gutters, we're thinking of twisting the wire when it goes in front of the back porch. Any thoughts or suggestions on that? Thanks
That's a way better idea than running it up over your house. Is that what you did and did it work?
Beth K can the transmitter go into a shed
Do you have to make a loop in order for it to work
Hmm the second scenario I would have just found a way to twist the wire along the house running both directions instead of running it up the roofline. More wire but I think it’s cheap enough to not encounter the issues
My thoughts exactly.
Very helpful. Thank you very much!
ok i commented before watching whole video thank u been doing this all day was at my wits end so up in the roof it goes thnks guys
Extremely helpful!! Thank you so much!!
Awesome video I watched five or six videos before I Found your video with all the information I needed thank you spot on the job
Very helpful, thank you! I'm about to buy and install one for the dog we're going to get soon.
for the looped back yard coudl you have twisted the wires close to the house?
Thanks for this great post 🙋🙋🙋🙋🙋
If you have a existing wooden horse fence, could you run the wire on the bottom rung of the fence? It’s pretty close to the ground.
Ok I need this for one of my cats. My back yard is 6 foot high chain link fence on three sides, BUT the side to my one neighbor is jut the average wooden fence. My one cat always jumps over and into his yard which he is not impressed with. He keeps giving me notes in my mailbox. So I bought one of these off of amazon, and need to know about installing. Frick backyard by the house has solid concrete, chain link fence, and other side has my deck which is right up against chain link fence. The gate here is wood and although I tried jimmying stuff on the top to make him stop jumping he still finds this area too. I can't go near the chain link fence with this wire can I?? I doubt it. Too many obstacles in my yard!!!
do you have to use coated wire for your wireless fencing I need to figure this out and someone help me
Can you place sections of it on the fence and sections underground?
When you twist the wire for a doorway is that wire spliced into the loop?
I have a problem my be you can help me out on figure it out I live on a water front so I ran my wire around the hold yard I started from the back door where the transmitter going to be of the house but I have a two screed door where the dog use to go in and out of the problem I have is i took another wire cut it and twist it together and took one twisted two wires and put a wire nut with the three wire on one end and ran it around the two patio doors took the other two end and place it on the other wire before I hook it on the transmitter will it work like that for a safety fence so the dogs can cross over with out getting shocked?
Hi and thanks for the help, my question is I installed my transmitter in my shop "separate" from home which is where my twisted wire is cancelling the correction I then later decided to try adding to the area and taking in access to my porch to allow entry and exiting my house I think the simplest way is the way Brian explained he went overhead at his patio door, how high and wide would I need to run this on a 7' x 36" door if range is set on level 5 or max on the Pet safe stubborn dog in-ground wire for him to be able to exit/enter?
ALLEN LEE - you keep saying the collar "shock" the dog!!! Is it a shock or a sound??
Does the double side wire need to be live wire...like, can I just wrap another wire on top on the wire used for the actual fence or will that not interrupt the signal?
Did any of the systems require grounding the transmitter?
Great Video! It helped a lot when I installed my in-ground fence yesterday. However, I have one problem, the collar activates where I don't want it to (entryway to the house). I have the loop going just around my backyard like the second man on your video, but I didn't run the wire along the edge of the roof. The area I wanted the dog to be able to cross (the side entry door into my attached garage) I put in the ground. This is how I did it...At the beginning of the "okay to cross zone" I cut the wire and spliced a twisted piece to go across the doorway and down the perimeter of the backside of the house and then up into the box, but this twisted area is signaling correction. Please help! Thanks so much :)
Hmm, not sure I completely understand your description without a diagram. I am not sure how the dog gets out of the loop?
The Handyguys Podcast we are trying to do something similar - it's the same installation as the second guy in the video but instead of running a wire up the house and through the gutter (which is a little nuts, especially if you have a 2 story house), just run a twisted wire across the door. In our case, the wire runs along the ground creating a loop and then terminates at the back deck (4' off the ground)
The way that Innotek wants you to do is create two loops but after having done one loop... no thanks.
how do u install for only back yard all the ones ive seen are around entire house
good job guys
My owner needs to get this as I'm escaping from my fenced yard lol
Hey guys got a question. I’m putting in a hidden fence system for my dog but the only place I have to put the main power box is beside the door the dog will be using. I was thinking of running the wire high and out the top of the door so the dog doesn’t get zapped going out but it’ll have to run down the side of the house for about ten feet. Now my question is the aluminum siding won’t cause an issue will it?
aluminum siding should not cause any issues. some people even run wires up aluminium gutters.
Thanks guys just put ours in with the trencher and it was a breeze
I want to install it only in the backyard but i don't want to go on the roof because i want my dog to be safe hanging out at the outside patio on 2nd floor... What if i twist the wires across the back of the house? Do you think that is going to work? The system I am looking into is "Dogtek Electronic Dog Fence System".
Thank you!
I was wondering the same thing. Obviously you have figured out how to do it since this was posted a year ago. Please tell me how you ended up installing it. Thank You
Great video guys.
Question. My driveway is all cement where could I put this wire? I have grass on my right side in the middle cement. And on my left side grass again. So I have the middle wide open. What to do? Thanks!
Its hard to say without seeing it. I would look for an expansion joint. usually between the drive and the sidewalk (if you have one) or the street to driveway transition. Run the wire through that expansion joint. Use some concrete caulk to hold the wire in place if you cant burry it in the joint. The dog will only be able to get a few feet from the wire so they wont bother people on the sidewalk or get right up to the street.
Super helpful. Way better than some of the other videos I watched.
I bought one but i dont know if this will work if a stranger is a the other end
Thanks for the nice video guys!
do you have to have splicers
5:00 finally start mentioning installation.... but not getting to the point yet.
What are the options of ABC do ?
What type of wire is it? Single conductor or dual?
hi guys. I live in a small ranch house on about an acre of grass. I want to install the fencing similar to the 11 minute demo but would twisting the wire along the back of the house 100 feet work if I spliced it 3 ways to get a single 300 ft. loop so my dog can roam the back yard and be in the bedrooms without fear of being corrected?
+belikett You cannot twist three wires together. The signal won't work correctly. There are some patterns on our website www.HudsonValleyDogGuard.com
My situation is a bit different. I have a block wall around my yard, but there is a low spot where the dog can jump over. Due to neighborhood and traffic codes, I cannot extend the height. I suppose I could install the wire along the entire inside of the wall, but there are several walk ways, driveways, etc that would make that very difficult. not to mention the added expense. I only need to keep the dog away from the wall of about a 20 fot section. My question is, can I install the wire in a big circle in that area only and twist the wire around most of the "circle" leaving single wire along the block wall. That way the dog only gets shocked when he approaches the wall where there is single wire. Will that work?
Blake Bernholz Yea, I would think you can do something like that. You can create a rectangle in front of wall and then run twisted wire back to your transmitter.
Just wondering. My driveway is already completed but I do have one underground pipe. Could I put the two wires just through this part and will it work. Do not want to put another pipe under driveway.
We ordered an underground fence system that cam with 14awg wire. We are trying to get the wire to connect to the two red LOOP pressure tabs power unit at the plug but the red tabs will not hold the wire. I tried the black tabs marked transmitter and they hold well. Am I doing somthing wrong or are the two red loop tabs too week to hold the wire and I need a replacement.
Thanks Dana Whitfield
14awg? That sounds like much too big of wire for most systems. Having said that, you could just use some smaller leads tot your tabs and then use some twist on wire connectors to connect the leads to your main runs. you just need continuity.
Can you mount the wire on a chain link fence? My dog is climbing and jump 4ft to 5ft chain link fence
duane nelson YES! In fact I think its easier than digging. Just route the wire along the top edge and you are done.
if you brought your dog to your friends will the collar still work if it's a different bran transmitter and would that be safe..
fearl3 good question
Hey guys great video but how do you fix a broken wire
If you want it to last use a max of 14 gauge. These guys are using 16 or maybe 18 gauge it won't last long. a 14 gauge or less will last at least 10-12 years before it starts to break down.
Matt D of course the quality of insulation used on the wire is going to be a big factor when comparing 14 to 16 gauge, for example.
What is the name of the machine u tenyed
What is that tool for getting the wire in the ground called?
Also, can you add as much wire as you want or would you need a different transmitter account for the extra wire?
Great vid thanks! Looking into this for my yard nkw
you can buy more spools of wire
that will work with the same transmitter
Instead of running my wire up and over my back door and down the other side, would it be possible to twist 2 wires and splice the two to one on each end under my porch? Or are you only able to splice one to one?
Good question. I would love to know how it worked if you tried it. I’m thinking the same
The issue you are having is reflections from the field.this frequently happens with cheaper systems the easiest fix is to buy a second system use bare wire and connect wire building.if it works your are good to go. There is a chance will not work so save your receipt. Length of lWire should be about 8 foot long. Hope it works the next step sucks.
13:59 what machine rental?
Question if I just wanted to run a wire along the front of my house to keep the dog from going to the road, is there something that works that way?
when you are putting up your wireless electric fence underground or whatever do you have to have coded wiring to make this work or regular wiring I need to know so I can put up a fence so my dogs will not keep torturing my neighbor please I need an answer as soon as possible
you use the wiring that is offered with the kit or you can purchase it separately. It is normally 20-gauge wiring but you can use heavier wiring - some people do to help it last longer.
Thanks for the info guys, I did this for my small lot by hand but my parents want one and their yard is very large. Did you guys use that cable bury machine with yellow 20 guage without breaking issue?
Yes, no issue using the yellow 20g wire with the machine we rented at the home center. That said, if you kink it badly, stretch it or hit it with a shovel when backfilling you could cause an issue. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
does it work with bigger size dogs?...I have one 145 pound Caucasian shepherd and a 130 cane corso...
+Aldo Gonzalez I would have to do some research on sensitivity of the breed. Also I would think the larger size dogs would begin to test the limits of these systems.
I have a two hundred foot lenght of my property which is not fenced the rest is however so how would i make my loop?? could i just go the distance in the trench then come back the same way in the trench to complete the loop??? using four hundred feet of wire????
Frank Yost you can do that but you have to make sure that the wire is space a distance apart ...check with manufacturure of your system. I think if it is spaced 6-8' apart you can loop it back. So sort of like a big U shape.
ok thank you guys
Can the loop be used for exclusion and not for inclusion area?
Does the fence have to be in a circle only
Where would you rent that tool from or what's the name of it?
it is called a wire trencher. Most rental places have it. We rented from a Home Depot rental
What is the tool called!?!
Stupid question...do I have to dig the soil or the floor of my house to put the wires underground? I have a dog that I want to potty train in-house (she has a potty box I built in-house) because we live in an apt and go out all day long. I plan to use this to restrict her area in a small corner of the apartmemt, is that possible?
Thanks a lot
Nhu Nguyen no wires will work on the ground but will be more sensitive. Not sure they would work indoors as a result. You may want to look into products that are designed for indoors.
+Nhu Nguyen I wouldn't do this. The dog might think that she can never use the other parts of the house.
ignore the troll comments. great job guys!
Every job is an all day job for me, just always works out that way.
What about lightning strikes in the yard that cause ground current that can follow the wire right to your house? How does that get mitigated?
good question. Not sure. however, would current go to house when wire is already in ground. Thought current always goes to house. I would suspect that the dog fence is no more of an issue than your gutters or other metal structures attached to home.
+The Handyguys the current would follow the wire but it is insulated and depending on the strength of the ground current it COULD melt the insulation off the wire and then it would surely follow the wire straight back to the house.
I bought one anyway but it has t arrived yet. Haha. Does the manual say anything about grounding it to the house ground in some way that won blow out the base unit and anything else on that circuit?
Actually i meant to say that current always goes to GROUND. Don't think it can handle lightening current back to house any more then other in ground electrical wire would bring lightening back into the house.
Thank you for this video... we are looking into this for our pet.. Do you have a link of the wire system you have here on amazon? I would appreciate it... Thanks!
The unit Handyguy Brian installed has been replaced by a newer model. If buying today he would get one with a vibration option (for hard of hearing dogs) See options here amzn.to/2D6F6rv
Couldn't you use the twist method under the door that the dog exits so that they can go through the door and you wouldn't have to run the wire up to the top of the house?
I got mine from wish for $82. Mine came with 4 callors and two things of wire for 1.2 acers so I have 2.4 acers done. I will be getting 3 more later to add on so I have all 5 acers of my land done.
+Jaisa MCclain where is wish? located Jaisa
James Simons It's an app. You buy it straight from china instead of it being sent to stores and them. Jacking the prices up.
Can you give the name/link of the product so I can look it up on Wish app. Thanks
Cute :) "Helping you with your honey do list"
Guys i found a kit on ebay for 55 dollars with 2 collars i do not know the brand is their a difference in quality?
+James Simons Not sure. Not sure what you purchased. Make sure you get the collars and the receiver
What is the tool called that you used to instal the fence?
Install
Its called a trencher but with a cable install feature. Home Depot calls it a Cable Installer. www.homedepot.com/tool-truck-rental/Cable-Installer/TP400CL3/index.html
im trying to cancell out my wire at the back door which is in the middle of my wire i tried splicing into it with another wire and twist it and also twisted the wires at the transmeter why wont it work can you twist it to much???????
+Tim Lentsch Twisting it too much doesn't matter. You cannot just add wire to cancel it out.
COULD I BURRY THE WIRE IN PVC PIPE AND TRANSMITTER AND SHOCK WORK PROPERLY. I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH GROUND MOLES. I WANT TO FIND OUT FIRST INSTEAD OF INSTALLING FIRST AND WASTING TIME AND MONEY
Yes, you could put the wire in PVC. Installing the wire (without PVC) is easy and inexpensive if you can rent the machine. If it were me, I would just install the wire and cross my fingers. If moles chewed the wire then I would think about conduit. BTW - If you put down "Milky Spores" amzn.to/2IITZmW which control grubs/beetles, grubs are the main source of food for the borrowing rodents. No food, no rodents. Good luck!
Hi,can I run the wire on existing fence instead of burying it.Thanks
I'd like to know too. What did you find out?
Yes. Use 14ga though
what is the name of that tool to rent
wire and cable trencher
The Handyguys thanks guys
Sportdog makes a box that will cover 100 Acres and has a remote for additional training
Think I can get away with Cat5e for my twisted wires? 🙃
Whats the names of the products you dorks
chris2crazzy he said pet safe
18/1 or 18/2 conductor
What kind of machine did you rent?
A Wire Cable trencher
..so batteries, recharge after a month, or replace after a month. Sounds similar costs to me.
I guess it depends on what you pay for electricity, right? ;-). We have recorded a video on choosing collars which will be coming out (hopefully) in the next month.
Mine is working backwards for some reason. It shocks when you are inside the square, and stops when you are outside the square. Petsafe Ultrasmart.
Grow Pot Cheaply reverse polarity
Did u get any information about this problem?
Do you have to burry it or can you just stake it down?
You can just stake it down but it would not be too permanent and the wire would be subject to being easily damaged. The rental machine for digging and burying the wire was really easy to use and didn't cost much.
what does it mean to double loop it mean?
which part of the video are you referencing?
if u dont do a complete loop you make a double loop. basically where you want to end the fence you hVe to run it from that end point back to the start point
Dang, I'm going to have to set this up on a 12acre lot!
training could be a challenge with that size lot.
You don't necessarily have to use all twelve acres. We have five acres but only installing the fence for one acre.
whats it cost to pay someone who knows how to do it to do it?, how long?
Instead of running the cable up the downspouts and across the roof, would it be easier to just twist it for the length running across the face of the house?
I just ordered once of these fences and will have to figure out how to deal with this issue as well.
+mnelson6688 I though we were going to try to use just our backyard, and therefore would of had to figure out how to get the wire either twisted across the face of the house or up and over the down spouts. Well in the end we found an existing crack through our driveway which we were able to scrape out and run our line through. So we were able to run the fence all the way around our property and this was no longer a problem.
I will say though that I could not think of a way to run a loop around the backyard and then have a twisted end across the face of the house. Because I would of had to make a third pass. This is too hard to describe without a visual. But use a piece of string as a model and you will see that it doesn't work out.
and under the cement driveway?
You cut into it
Dam didn’t show to to plug it in the box
Can you just twist a wire at the door???
Thank you! Cuz my giant dog keeps busting through my wire fence.
What's the percentage that Electrical Fence will stop a full-grown charging Doberman Pinscher that is coming at you because you're running a lawn mower? Is it 100 percent that dog will not cross that line?
Yea bro I read the manual too
