GM Power Antenna Repair - Replace Cable - Motor runs all the time

- In this video, I replace the cable which pushes and pulls the antenna mast up and down.
When this plastic cable breaks, the antenna motor will run constantly and eventually burn out, after discharging the battery several times.
Often, when getting an older car going, you will find that the antenna has been disconnected to stop the motor. After replacing the broken cable, you will probably have to locate and reconnect the wiring.
The parts which I used came from Zip Corvette parts. The part number and contact information is below:
The replacement cable is reasonably priced compared to a new antenna assmebly. These antennas are very well built and you will not be able to purchase any aftermarket antenna mechanism that even comes close to this quality.

I appreciate your in-depth look at the problem and how to repair it and explaining the whole procedure. Great job Thank you.
Glad it helped you!
Here I was thinking there was something wrong with my radio causing the motor to run on. I found that that cable was broken, but I didn't connect the dots that it would cause the motor to keep running because it never saw that high current stop at the end of the spool. Other vids had me thinking I needed to spool it correctly in order to time the motor, but it was pretty easy and automatic after all. Thanks for the vid showing the process.
Came to learn how the motor worked; stayed for the tool work. Great video!
Thanks!
Thanks for posting. I knew how these antenna work but never really need to find out how the limit switches worked but was always curious. Thanks for taking the time and actually showing that.
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the feedback on my videos.
WOW - 80s Technology, all of that for an antenna
Good job. I like with yours that I could see everything inside the antenna mechanism. I wasn't going to watch the whole video but I enjoyed what you were doing and you have a nice voice. It was actually quite calming just watching the work you were doing. Well done for being the first time you did this.
Thanks Joanne! I'm pleased you enjoyed my video. I often find watching people work on stuff to be calming. Helps with anxiety, I believe.
Great job! My 1988 Caprice Classic just started acting up. Motor runs and won't retract...Fun times!!
Nice job. Was hoping to see what was involved in buying the repair kit and now, with watching your video, I think I'm going to order the kit and give it a try. Thank you, David!
Nice job David! I did this repair on a 95 Riviera a few months ago. Trunk antennas have a drain tube because water will migrate down the antenna. I also noted that mine had an extra "timing wheel" that counted the turns and mechanically stopped the drive wheel instead of putting strain on the antenna cord. I will send you pics on your f/b page.
Thanks for the info and pictures of the timing wheel. That is a good idea to save stress on the mechanism.
Interesgingly, the one in the Century also has the drain tube connection point. No tube needed with it hidden in the fender - but the port is there.
This is the same antenna as a 1982 corvette. Glad I saw this because I thought you had to buy the entire collapsible portion. The solid rod with nylon cable is still available.
great job good coverage from start to finish, just pulled out my power antenna from my 82 toronado and will order the repair kit, and follow your steps, mine looks just like yours. thanks,
Thanks, glad you found it helpful!
Good Job! I'm replacing my mast and couldn't figure out how to gat the old broken cable out. Just unscrew that little white piece. Thanks man!
Hey thanks, I have 5 antennas that don't work so I'll be fixing them all. The motors are all good just no up and down motion. Great video and thanks again!
Awesome work David! Just the video I needed to watch to get my 3rd gen Camaro antenna fixed. Thanks
Thanks, and glad it was useful to you.
That was awesome! I don;t have the patience. I'd have to pay someone or just buy a new car with a fixed "dorsal" fin antenna. Great job!
Best GM Antenna Vid! Thanks
Thank you for the video. My 1999 Cadillac D'Elegance Deville is basically the same gut's. My cable is broken as well. I was lost till I seen your video
Thanks, hopefully you can get your Cadillac antenna fixed up soon!
@@davida1hiwaaynet where did you buy the cable. Thank you
It's in the video description. If I put a link in this comment they may block it. Click "show more" in the description. If you can't see it, let me know! :)
@@davida1hiwaaynet Thanks again. All is well.
@@davida1hiwaaynet I have a 1998 Cadillac deville I'm having a hard time threading the end through the slot,Is it suppose to fit in the slot?
GM made Mast repair kits for Bent & Broken lower Masts, upper mast with Cable, as well as sold a replacement gear. A few different types of power antennas were used across GM vehicles. if you can't find new parts you can junk yard hunt for similar looking units and Frankenstein one. Mount brackets are car line, year and trim specific.

Nice to see it done before I have to do it. Mine is in a '86 Cutlass Ciera.
Great video & illustration. Love it...
Good job on the video and thorough instructions. Thanks
Ok,the way I ended up getting this done was to put the cable in the mast and extend it all the way. Then I put the halves together and used the motor to draw the cable in with a battery. + goes to gray. - goes to green. Just make sure to unhook the power once it's wound up.
Great video, thanks for posting. Very helpful
Great video I really appreciate you taking the time to show how to fix the original antenna. Before you fixed it when the motor would just run did it sound just like a clicking noise and also is this kit good for a 1983 Chevrolet Caprice?
Thank You. Very helpful. Going to work on my 89 Brougham now.
You are actually closing the contacts on either limit switch when the mast reaches the end of its travel.
milton good sth australia well done a very good vidieo perfect in every delail thank you!
Thank You. I have a 1995 Buick. Rick
This is awesome David! I have to fix the antenna on my new Salon lol. Of course it doesn't work.
wow. I was wondering if anyone knew how these things work. wow. guess i found him. I think my relay isn't working on my 81. New antenna purchased 3 times. When I hook it up I show 3 wires with voltage. Or nothing. So pretty sure I'm shorting out the antenna. I've ordered a fourth antenna so that when I can figure out whats going on with my relay I can install it and it will work. My guess is there is no one selling these relays any longer and even a used one would be very expensive. So the alternative is to find just a relay that works like this one and rewire it. Yet I have no clue how it is wired or really what to do next. I guess I could get a cheap pwr antenna that has red black and blue wire to radio. Yet these seldom hold up. I wish I could figure out how to make this type you show here to work with either a new way to wire it or see if I can one day find a used relay that works. So frustrating. ive got wires going everywhere on this 81.
I like your can do, let’s get er done attitude.
Interesting how GM did the antenna control. My Benz's original power antenna used an electronic current sensing circuit to tell when the mast was at a limit and turn the motor off. I replaced it with a Motorola CB combo antenna. I don't know how it turns the motor off, but it does have q clutch inside that clicks several times when the mast is at its limit.
Neat. I remember those Hirschmann automatic antennas from the German cars. They had a small rubber cogged belt in them that would drive the mechanism. Very quiet but also had a cable system that would break.
I have a 89 trans am. Same problem. It’s stuck up. No pun intended.
great video. using it to fix my 85 toronado.
Did u ever figure out how to fix it. I had to unhook battery because my antenna motor won't stop running on my 83 Toronado 😵
My 93 Roadmaster has a power antenna near the rear of the car and it may be the thing draining the battery
Alright then! 🎉
Good job THANK YOU ..
Excellent video. Love the detail. Do you remember what size screws you used to reassemble the unit? Can we test it without relay? If so, do we use the white wire as the ground and then put the positive terminal on one green wire to go up and the other to make the antenna go down?
Well that is a thing of beauty.
Thanks David!
Yes mine does this also
See how nicely his new cable stayed in the gear. ....even when he had the gear out. Not mine. It was unraveling and flying all over which makes it impossible to get the case halves together.
How can I get the antenna down without turning off the car or radio? Like when I go thru the car wash
You would be able to install a switch in the "ant" wire from the back of the radio, to the harness. When this circuit is open, the antenna will go down.
Nice 👍
Well done!
What position are the limit switches in to run the antenna up or down? Working on mine, I have no continuity between gray/ green or white/ green wires to either raise or lower mast until it stops motor. I can set up the lower limit switch in the stop position but when I apply power to raise mast it moves a fraction of an inch, opening limit switch and motor quits running. Seems to me the upper limit switch should be making contact to raise mast fully but this isn't happening . Any suggestions?
Antenna motor running. Keys out of ignition. What can I do until daylight, so battery won't be drained?
Carolyn, there is a relay you can disconnect. But, to be safest if you're not sure, you can disconnect the battery negative cable.
GOOD JOB.
video helped me a lot thanks
Nice job David! I have 2 Cadillac Fleetwoods a 94 and 96. The 94 the antenna never has gone up all the way, probably about 6 inches short. Over the last few years I have got 3 at junkyards. Being a 25+ year old car, none of them worked. But I was able to make 1 good one out of 4. Thank you. I still have the one that doesn't extend all the way. Cable is good, I'm guessing the motor is tired and can't do the job. The 2 other motors on the other units, are dead. Any ideas?
I'm thinking I might try to get an antenna from a deville caddy and combine parts etc to give me a spare.
Tom
It's getting harder and harder to get good JY parts any more! If the motor isn't producing the power to move the antenna, it could be the brushes are not making good contact and the commutator needs to be cleaned.
@@davida1hiwaaynet Thanks David, that's a very good answer. Having been an electrician for 45 years, that's well within my capabilities. Probably won't get to it for a few months as we're heading down south next week.
Where can I find the exact chrome hood spear that you have on your car for my car? Any help is appreciated
Davida1highway
Do you have too take the front fender off too remove the power antenna ?
My 95 Buick century I got new fenders and the power antenna didn't come with it
I bought used matching color fenders for my car .
I'm fixing the body and repairing rust .
Thanks!
thanks really great help.
awesome video !!!
little chaos on the work banch but topic is helpful. thanks for share it.
how many years you work did last?
Glad it helped you!
im wondering if this would fit my 87 pontiac safari station wagon? anyone know. its considered a b body. thank you.
Thank you!
Thanks a lot for doing the vid. I'm going to attempt to repair the power antenna on my 87 Buick very soon. I received the exact same repair cable from Zip this week.
Question though, what size screws did you use to replace the rivits with?
Be mindful that (like an older "zip-tie"), that these cables become brittle (like macaroni) and hence, they WILL break again ... *the NEW replacement mast kits render that matter academic however, as they are made with a metal cord.
Could you please post the repair instructions, much appreciated
How did you thread your end through the slot? I'm having a hard time doing that
Which wires did you hook to positive and negative??
How did you wind the new cable?
David do you know if the this kit work for a 1987 Olds cutlass 442?
Yep it should fit perfectly!
Hey Marz did you get your antenna fixed if so did you have to take off your whole fender?
what happen with the rock n roll olds convertible???
It's running well! I have reached a point where it is going to be time for interior and convertible top work. I'm not ready to go into that part of the repairs yet. Now, I'm just getting the tuning done, as well as putting miles on the car trying to "smoke out" any upcoming issues caused by sitting.
Can you repair mine I have a 81 corvette
its 39.99 from zip corvette
This olimpia is new for you???
No, I've had it for a while - about 9 years. It's been on the road as daily driver for about 6 years now.
Got a 3.8SFI Turbo engine.
im working in my 86 fwd fleetwood with the radiator.
Great detailed video and explanation, thank you.
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Nice 👍
