The Bourbon Trail: A Complicated and Contradictory History
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 май 2024
- The Kentucky Bourbon Trail came into being in 1999, a product of the Kentucky Distillers Association, or KDA. It consists of member distilleries, which are listed as “stops” on the trail, though not all of the distilleries support tours. There are four gateway regions designated for the trail; these are Northern Kentucky, Lexington, Louisville, and Bardstown. The eighteen stops of the main Bourbon Trail are scattered around these four gateways. There is also a Craft Tour, also divided into four regions, with a total of 28 stops. The craft tour is focused on the continuing re-emergence of craft bourbons in the United States.

Is this just a giant advertisement for alcohol?
I sure hope you're not sponsored, lmao!
Are you guys there's a spelling error on the thumbnail? Bourtbon...?
@@AB0BA_69 like anyone would complain about being sponsored by any bourbon company not including Jim Beam
@@theoccasionalgamer6253 Plenty of people would refuse such sponsorship because they don't want to shill booze to their viewers.
This whole video felt like a giant advertisement 🤮
@@AB0BA_69 yeah, fair enough, although I personally liked it because I enjoy the product being talked about and got the closest thing to a history lesson on bourbon you can get without being at either a distillery where they make it or looking around online (so to speak, yes I am aware that RUclips still counts as "online")
Running in the Urban Bourbon half-marathon in Louisville in October
Kinda want to see a video like this for Scotch and for tequila, but bourbon is still my favorite of those 3 by far. Rum would also be an interesting one
"How it compares to other spirits, ie it's better" 😂 yes, yes it is Eric
Erik I am so proud of you for pronouncing Louisville correctly
Woodford Reserve is one of my favorites.
Same
I’ve worked at 4 different distilleries through out my career thus far, including big & small and I can confirm that individual distilleries (esp smaller ones) hate the monopolization of what is essentially “tourism” in KY. If you’re a smaller location/production, it is hard to keep up with what they charge to be featured on the trail.
I'm a Wild Turkey guy but there are many that I like. If you get a chance, check out their American Honey Sting. You get the sweetness of the honey up front, followed by the heat of ghost pepper.
I particularly like Buffalo Trace personally, although it's been a hot minute since I've had other Bourbon, Willet isn't bad and Makers Mark is passable
This one sounds fantastic. Gonna track it down.
@@chrisgreener5599 you absolutely should. Luckily they've started selling Buffalo Trace bourbon cream outside of KY in recent years. About 10 years ago the only places you could find it were in KY, but now I've been able to find it in a few places both in WA and NM, mostly dedicated liquor stores, but a store called La Tienda ("the store" in Spanish, please forgive if I misspelled) where I live sells it
Ohhh de Camptown ladies sing this song. Doo dar, doo dar
It changes from Bulliet to Old Forester.
Bulliet is gooood.
I'm sorry for being so hard on Erik.
Erik should come to Morehead and see the Double Sunset.
I love Bourbon Definitely need to hit the trail sometime. But definitely do not need to do it like I did epcot drinking around the world. In 1 day.
I certainly can't drink like I used to. But sipping bourbons and whiskeys are usually fine. If I did it, it'd be like a vacation thing. Maybe I'd work on some short stories while away. But certainly not something to be done in a day.
Hey Eric! Love your work ❤❤❤❤
I'll give you two favorites. Four Roses is my go to, but at the moment, Smoke Wagon is my favorite. One is a Kentucky bourbon, the other is... Complicated.
I suggest everyone take the Bluegrass Parkway heading east from Elizabethtown. Lots of Bourbon. use your Google maps set to Georgetown, and you get to go through horse breeder land. Jeez, I wish I could post pictures here.
absolutely gorgeous. As a non-local, you did a very good job pronouncing Louisville.
it would be awesome if you did one on the history of rum in America, it was made along side whisky as long as Europeans have been in the Caribbean and the Americas.
My favorite Bourbon is Scotch. Oh, that doesn't work, does it.
Single malt, preferably an Islay.
4 minute intro is wild
Woodford Reserve double oak, I live in the middle of the Bourbon Trail.
Jealous.
"Dizzying array of conflicting information"
😅
A coworker recommended Old Bardstown and it's currently my favorite
Geographics? More like alcohographics!
Great work, loved the video, even though I'm not a drinker.

PS: Pardon the pun but keep the "spirit" !
@Geographics ok, while i'm just getting used to our new host, the audio must be at least as good... so much room echo, not close enough to the mic; mic element facing the wrong way [i.e.: addressing a blue yeti from the TOP ... it is a side address... sm7b is front or top addesess] please work this out... i love these channels...
Basil Hayden's Toast was the last bottle I bought. I'm a Booker's fan... I need to take a trip to Lexington again... Maybe Winchester too.
As someone who has the bourbon trail completion t-shirt, it's not really worth it. There's a few good stops, but after so long it just bleeds into one long tour.
Would I be better off just sampling where I am? We get a lot of the bigger named bourbons here.
@@geographicstravel Some of the stops are cool and worth it. But all 18+ stops definitely aren't worth it.
@@geographicstravelif you can find some Buffalo Trace bourbon cream then try in on it's own as well as mixed with root beer. Both are great ways to have it. Also, I'd be more than happy to drive to KY and go on a sampling your with y'all as I'm sure plenty of others following this channel would.
Man, this video really made me want some good ol' Bourbon!
@@theoccasionalgamer6253 This is the correct answer.
As someone relatively new to whiskeys of all sorts - I find Bourbon to be by far my favorite. My go-to’s that are easy to find are Larceny and Knob Creek. My favorites that are a little harder to find are Paddleford Creek, Quarter Horse, and Agitator - though that last one may draw ire from purists, as it is finished in red wine barrels (and their red wine aged in bourbon barrels is also one of my favorite wines!).
I am always disappointed when all I can find abroad is Jim or Jack, if they have bourbon at all. 😒
I started with scotch...and haven't turned back since I tasted some top shelf bourbon. Knob Creek is awesome, but my favorite right now is Stagg...if only I could find some at my ABC store!
Two and a half minutes in and I'm feeling... very American🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Yes, I am an American and yes I like bourbon.
I’m born and raised in Kentucky, family has made shine for a 100 plus years Lol I’m in Marion, Taylor, and Woodford counties. My childhood home was colonial sanders childhood home, old cabin turned into modern house Lol in camp Nelson. You kinda sorta right but rather wrong too haha 😂🤷♂️ my better half works at the stave, a bourbon trail restaurant outside of Versailles. My family has a long history with “bourbon”. My favorite is the kind that comes from a copper worm deep in a holler made from pure memory by the hands of an 80 year old feller….. good shine/bourbon can’t be bought in a store Haha 😂 there’s a few “ok” kinds out there but they’re all copies of the original with a slight twist 😉👍🥃
I like 4 roses. Its not stupid expensive and it's still pretty good.
Favorite bourbon- Angels Envy
Also, proudly born and raised in what is arguably the best region of Kentucky bourbon - Bardstown.
Elijah Craig is my go to everyday bourbon. Has a nice spice like Stagg but much more affordable. If you do take a trip on the BT, Heaven Hill and Buffalo Trace are a must. I suggest skipping Bullet. Rabbit Hole is a really good modern distillery. If you know nothing about bourbon, Old Forester has a fantastic tour.
I found Elijah Craig to be almost too smooth for me. Buffalo Trace and Blanton's are good though.
@@geographicstravel Sounds like you are a barrel proof kind of guy. Buffalo trace is good, but nothing special. The distillery is very good though. Blanton's is very good, if you can get it at MSRP. I live in Cincinnati. Ohio governs the price of liquor in the state so a bottle of Blanton's, if you can find it, is only about $60-$70.
As a constantly broke drinker, I like some of the bottled in bond bourbons, like Evan Williams. If I were in the UK, I’d go for scotch. Domestic is always cheaper, but any kind of whisk(e)y has it’s good values.
Got my undergraduate degree at University of Louisville. I drank a lot of bourbon and enjoyed most of it. It's some beautiful country.
Regarding my preferred bourbon, the best bourbon I ever had was Rip van Winkle family reserve 13 year rye. It is not easy to get a hold of but damn... it's an impressive drink. Yes, Maker's Mark is definitely mid. The tour is still pretty good though. If you're going for cheap, Wild Turkey makes a very good product.
Also, I worked at a pizza joint owned by one of the descendants of Jim Beam. He and his brother were talking about starting up a distillery to do some artisanal bourbon. I'm not sure how it turned out and that was 20 years ago.
The Balvenie Caribbean cask is my current favorite, as well as my dad's.
Isn't that a Scotch?
@@geographicstravel
Scottish distillery.
Right now my favorite bourbon is Sweetens Cove. I’m saving the last of it that I have for a special occasion.
I'd love to try Stagg, if I could ever get my hands on a bottle! My favorite is probably Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, but for easier to obtain would be Bardstown Discovery
Fantastic, front on video, that captures a subject that I am familiar with, geographically, and maybe a few samples....now reside in Austin, TX
Jim beam devils cut is my go to these days. In general though, the trail is awesome! You should definitely make a trip to KY and check it out! There’s tons of amazing food around the area too. Also if you’re in northern KY, near Cincinnati, Newport aquarium is a fantastic stop too. One of the best aquariums I’ve seen.
Favorite shelfer is either Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (C batch) or Old Forrester 1920. Favorite allocated bourbon is Michter's Toasted Barrel or George T Stagg
Tennessee whisky which is a close cousin
Big fan of the St Elmos cherry vanilla bourbon. Idk if you can get that anywhere considering st elmos is only in Indy but its incredible
Thanks.
Ahh, a man after my own heart. I was raised with Scotch, drank Whisky and loved Bourbon.
Favorite bourbon? Mostly any Russells reserve private barrel. Also Jack Daniels 12 year. Sorry Jack Daniels is a bourbon by all accounts and definitions. Also most any four roses private barrel is amazing and yes, you should do the trail. Eric it is awesome.
Maker's Mark is my go to, but Elijah Craig is good too. A third brand would be good for rotation, but I haven't found one yet.
Hotel Tango. Indiana law changed in 2014 and it's the first legal artisan distillery to have opened there since Prohibition
16:45 - As a non-American, I still find it ironic that Moore county (where Jack Daniels is made)... is a Dry county. 😏
The only thing missing from the video is a map of the modern-day trail with all of the gateway cities shown.
A very good bourbon is bookers by jim beam. It comes in a wood box and is supposedly made the way the original jim beam liked his bourbon. Jim beam tangy bbq sauce is also very delicious
Bookers is one of the best. Definitely.
Great narration and presentation. I would love to do a bourbon tour. Favs JD & wild Turkey
So far, I like Four Roses Small Batch (haven't tried their single barrel yet but would like to) and Makers Mark 46.
Old Forester 1920s Prohibition style.
That sounds good!
The best one I had was an Evan Williams 10 year old single barrel reserve.
I have a bottle of 1783 on my shelf at all times, it's my go-to "cheap" bourbon.
Whiskey made mostly out of corn is quite American. Bourbon is a real American liquor.
The Bourbon Trail is a programme set up by the Kentucky Distillers' Association. Smaller distilleries aren't in the programme. People should try bourbon from smaller distilleries too.
The only bourbon I've had is Jim Beam and it's nice. I can't remember drinking anything else.
Watching this while drinking Southern Comfort. 😂
Jim Beam Bonded 100 proof neat.
I keep it in the freezer and hit what I've dubbed the "det cord". I pour a shot and slam it back. It's so cold it numbs all the way down for a couple seconds, then the burn hits all at once as the alcohol evaporates. I pour a double. It frosts the glass and forms a very thin crust of ice on top from the humidity in the room. I sip on that for about a half hour, rolling the fire.
Yes. Jack Daniel's is terrible.
As someone that’s grown up around drinking, I have German and Irish ancestry and I actually distaste alcohol. My go too when I feel like drinking is oddly Jäger, n most people get all 😳
Old Forester 100 proof is my go to
Louisville Kentucky born and raised. Buffalo trace produces the best product if you ask me, Bullitt and woodford reserve are 2 close contenders
Also honorable mentions include:
Blanton’s, Jefferson’s, Willet, and wild Turkey
I've got a bottle of Blanton's for special occasions...because it's incredibly hard to get out here.
I'm a Woodford man through and through. Although I've probably tasted better bourbons in my life, I always go back to it. It is perfect. It is home.
BTW I suggest adding acoustic treatment to your room & selecting a better mic. There's a lot of the "Room Sound" in your audio - that is, it sounds boxy and the sound waves are reflecting off the walls into your mic - and your voice doesn't sound very "direct". You need absorbent panels on your walls to minimize reflections, and you need a cardioid pattern mic.
Favorite Bourbon: Booker's 2023 "Storyteller"
Absolutely Hate: Lead Slinger......straight swill!!
Eagle rare 10 year
Eagle Rare is GOOD, at least, when you don't get a batch that tastes like feet. lol
You did say, "maize and corn"? Right?
Under "redundant" in the dictionary it lists several things that are different and exactly the same, or something.
@20:20 he basically channeled his inner Bubba Gump for this section
Daniel Weller is dam good.
Whiskey does not get its smokey profile due to the boiling over peat fuelled fires, but due to the drying of the malt over slow burning peat fires.
Coopers craft 100 proof
I'll have to check my ABC store for that.
@@geographicstravel if you find it come back and let me know what you think! It pairs well with a nice cigar 🥃
I have a great Texan bourbon called Milam and Greene Rye Whiskey.
"I love bourbon" 😂 thank you for the facts on bourbon! I turned 21 a couple years back and have taken my sweet time sampling different types of alcohol. Before watching this, I couldn't tell you the difference between bourbon, whiskey or scotch 💀 but now that I'm more knowledgeable, maybe I'll give bourbon a shot! And there are plenty of recommendations down here in the comments, so this should be fun 😂
nobody knows how old the earth is
The scientific consensus is 4.543 billion years.
As a native of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky I was very happy to see a Geographics episode about my home. Just gotta say though, of all the beautiful stunning photos of this area of the country I’m seriously wondering why you all decided to use the ugliest dead of winter pic you could find of the bluegrass 😂
Buffalo Trace. 🥃🥃
Maker's Mark is great if you ask me.
If it was cheaper it would be good. So I agree with Eric that it is mid.
I used to dig Maker's 101, but it's just so damn hard to find, and I've found better stuff, like Stagg. :)
Bourbons are a fine drink yes, I do enjoy a nice bourbon on the rocks after nice big fat juicy steak.
The real nectre of the gods is Irish Whisky. If you have a ice cream maker Baileys and coffee ice cream, oh yeah! 🤤🤤🤤
Old granddad bottled in bond version
I went skinny dipping in Knob Creek if you know what I mean
I keep expecting the other dudes....lol
Bro our grass is just regular ass grass
Not according to Larry's research...?
Blanton's Distillery? Haven Hill Distillery? You don't actually like bourbon, do you?
If I could get Stagg, I probably would. My go-to right now is ECBP, but give me anything barrel proof, and I'll probably be happy.
Where is Simon Whistler?
Make seven up yours
Jim Beam Red Stag
I put my vote on Jim Beam.
Old Charter, mixed with regular Coca-Cola on good days and neat on a bad day
I find Jim Beam disgusting, lol
Evan Williams, or as my older sibling calls it, "E-Dub" is.... tolerable, but not great - makes a better marinade for steaks than anything worthy of drinking, imo
Also, I typed this before I got to the part in the video about the "Creation Museum" ......... LOL "and one may return to the bourbon trail...." obviously this man has never seen the documentary series known as "The Flintstones" hahahaha big respect, Mr. E 🤨
Buffalo Trace
Creek Water is my jam!
BRING BACK THE BALD BRITISH GUY
when I used to drink alcohol I liked I.W. Harper. in the late 60's and early 70's
AAAAAAAHHHHHH WHERES SIMON
Old Granddad 114
As far as bourbon goes, the best that I've had is Stagg Jr, I've never had the opportunity to try George T Stagg. Top notch whiskey!
Listen to the fans. Get rid of this guy!!
Old crow
🇺🇸
Bro showing off with Stagg and I've never even seen a bottle, my favorite is eagle rare, and I just gotta say you seem like I cool dude and I'm here to see you improve but... you gotta improve, there's something about your delivery that's very uncomfortable and amateurish, not saying this to be mean and I don't think I could do better, but your going to have to, idk try being less stiff
Sorry, but anyone who hears Camptown Races and thinks of anything other than Foghorn Leghorn, is completely unrelatable to me.
just letting you know once again that I can't stand this presenter and don't watch content if he is hosting. I was not a huge fan of Karl, but he was better than this guy. I may be in the minority on this, and that's fine, it doesn't mean I don't have a voice.
I liked Karl, this guy puts me to sleep... I listen to this like a podcast while driving so that's dangerous lol
You have only 1 comment. How are you letting people know AGAIN?
@@archstanton6102 a different channel? The host changed across a few channels
