Another design fail is no negative space - either there is clutter, a wish to cover every surface (table-top and wall) but generally many have too much stuff! Thanks for another interesting commentary, Garrett! I love you in blue.
😂 I love looking in the neighbors window when I’m walking the dog to see how they decorate. I don’t believe anyone who says they don’t do that. It’s human nature to be curious. Also, If the curtains are open in the evening, I feel it’s an invitation to do so. That’s why I always shut mine. Thanks for another great video!!
…”I look good in 4k” and “you have Lord Farquaad energy”… omg I laughed because that’s so you!! Educate and entertain. I truly love your content for so many reasons ❤
I have told my childhood shag story here many times. My parents had thick gold shag carpeting, and I knew we were in trouble when the installer said "And here's your rake." I was 7.
Im 70 and my husband 72 plus our 2 cats and weve downsized We just bought a flat and we are looking at all your videos to help us decorate We are from Gibraltar 🇬🇮 ❤
I subbed this channel a long time ago & didn't have notifications on. So happy to see Garrett gained so many legitimate fans! Way to go. -🎉 So well deserved! 😊
Thanks so much, and thank you for putting notifications on. I appreciate your support. I post videos on Thursdays at 1pm and Sundays at 10am Pacific Time. 😊😊😊
When someone walks in my home, they first see me, because I am beautiful! The TV is the last if my worries! Its like my dogs , the TV lives here. My TV is where I watch my RUclips Stars like Garrett 🤩 🙌… and it just goes where it fits. 🤭
I had a shag rug in the 70’s and the maintenance was insane, and you are correct about them getting disgusting. It was a huge rug and hadn’t been cheap but we eventually just threw it out.i shudder when I see the youngsters using shag again.
When I first purchased my townhome, the living room alone had 6 different paint colors (picture niche central for the fireplace wall and then 2 colors for the surrounding walls) as well as 4 types of flooring on the main level (golden oak in the entry triangle and kitchen, carpet in the living and dining, and then two different laminates for the CONNECTED half bath and laundry room). I didn't have much left, but new tiles floors throughout, and a singular paint color made all the difference. My now husband didnt even recognize the place when he came over as he had seen the before photos. Other renovations have followed over the last few years, but i will always remember the feeling of having it all "match" and i was in heaven.
Wow, I was just thinking that I hate bar stools and you mentioned them. I am 5' tall and getting older. I have a hard time getting on them, and they are very uncomfortable unless there is a foot rest so my legs aren't dangling and falling asleep. I had a friend who had a bar height table, and whenever we went to dinner, she always wanted to sit at the bar height tables. No, just no.
Always here for you! Shag carpet childhood trauma here too. I spilled plaster of paris (1970s) craft kit. Hid it somehow and my mom lost her mind when she found it! Funny now though 😁
My house is only 690 ft.². When I updated it the thing I knew I would absolutely do no matter what is new flooring. I hated the linoleum and the carpet so I put in LVP. I know people hate that stuff, but I can’t afford real wood flooring at all. I’m doing this on a budget. Thank you very much :-) but the fact that the whole house has the same type of flooring is so nice. And it’s low maintenance for my dogs and cat.
Garrett, your videos are such fun to watch! Great snark and excellent design advice! I especially appreciate how often you stress the importance of creating a safe environment and selecting materials that are easy to maintain.
Can't hate on the tv because movie nights and now football season too....very small home and nowhere else to put the tv, but i love all the decorating tips
After I moved from my mid century ranch with daylight basement, the new owner painted the stone front. It was an Ashleigh cut stone that is a bit porous and should not be painted. I learned this years ago while traveling in England---when they paint stucco or stone they use a lime wash so the stone can breathe otherwise it turns to dust. The three fireplaces had also been painted . 😢
Yes you look fabulous on my 75" television screen! Blue is your color. I had hot pink shag carpet in my childhood bedroom with rake. I think my mother was going through her psycho hippie phase as it was absolutely awful but the rest of the house was just beautiful. What I hate that others do is clutter and junk- making a huge fuss over something mass produced. Think tchotchkes and other nonsense. I do not want someone going through my house when I die and asking why I kept something so ugly or laughing at my decor. Keep away from trends and fast fashion decor. Excellent job as always Garrett! ☺️😍😊❤️🥰☀️🌴🦩😍😍❤️❤️🥰🥰
Speaking of barstools, restaurants with bar-height freestanding tables nowhere near the bar. Madness. I'm quite obviously short, so boo to that one host that one time for sitting me at one, because after I tried and failed to get into the seat, I had to call them back to sit me at a lower table. That's unnecessary friction for a business transaction, and it's unnecessary for home.
So true, regarding the ugliness of the tv as a focal point. I also dislike a tv in a restaurant. When I go out, I want to get away from homey things like a tv.
I have the two-level kitchen island that you pictured. I would prefer to have a counter-height island, but can't afford to replace what I have. The gas cooking surface is actually in this island on the lower level. It has a button that you push, and the exhaust element rises up out of the granite. Anyway, I agree with what you've said about barstools -- I hate climbing up on them myself. That said, I have noticed that although there is a table with chairs in my breakfast area, guests seem to gather on those barstools (they have backs) so that they can look easily into the kitchen while I'm finalizing hors d'oeuvres and drinks.
YES!!! Our TV is on the side wall when you first come in, but the first thing you see when you walk in the door is the artwork lining the hallway. I had never considered painting the tv wall black, I might do that. I'm not a fan of red brick. Our house is faux red brick on the front. We are looking into limewash as it allows the brick to breathe. We don't have the money to replace the faux brick and it's starting to look a little rough in some areas. But limewash/ replacement are way down the list of things we need to do. Love your video as always.
I completely agree with your opinion on all categories. The best you saved for last. So many homes these days have zero personality. They look like Ashley furniture showroom set ups and I think they're sad. I love walking into someone's home which immediately reflects their life and unique personality.
I got rid of my tv about 7 years ago. Not so much because it is an ugly thing to have in my house, but because the programmes are crap. 😅 And houses without personality are the worst. They look so cold and dead. Irma from the Netherlands
Thank you for the mention of vintage wool rugs. Too often interior designers push only neutral, new, rugs. When we moved into our house the brick fireplace was painted white. I took five colors of red and painted it to look like red brick - people couldn’t tell it was painted.
The red-lighted room....with Shreck on the TV ..I laughed soo much.😂😂😂😂...But..than I got anxious about the candles and the tassels......how long, until them tassels will catch fire😮!!!????...and You defending rose- brick walls again...Yes, absolutely right!!! Nice post...very lovely and interesting!!!!❤.....aaand: You look radiant in this colour!!!
TVs are necessary evils. When I have to replace mine I’ll get a frame TV. I did paint my TV wall SW Tricorn Black and it helped make my TV disappear. It looks so much better now and luckily the first thing you see is my grand piano which is also black, but beautiful
The brick fireplace in the living room of my 1917 Craftsman bungalow was painted at some point in the 90 years before we purchased it. Then someone in the late 80s or early 90s slapped the most hideous brown tile on top of the brick. I pried the tile off, and the brick is a huge improvement--but after trying multiple techniques to remove the paint from the brick I gave up. (As best I can tell, the most effective method is sand-blasting--but (a) it costs a fortune and (b) I'm quite sure there's lead based paint under there, and I'd rather not have sand-blasted lead dust floating around my home.) So if you walk into my home and hate the painted brick, please know I did my best.
I have a tiny condo with the counter that would use high stools. A waste of real estate and my friends and I are up in age. I needed storage, so I slipped kalax under it with doors, drawers and some open. It matches the rest of my 450 sq ft condo, I have red brick too.
Whoever comes up with a TV screen that folds (like the new phones do) will be a zillionaire. Till then, I think a projection screen that can roll up and out of sight if you want a gigantic TV picture in a common area is mandatory. These TVs that Ate Cleveland have become a bit ridiculous.
I hate barstools. At the end of the day, I'm a slightly elderly lady with some extra pounds to haul around. I like chairs that I can sit down in, that climbing is not my thing anymore.
Around 1987 while our parents were out of the house, my sister and I started pulling up the green shag carpet. There was good oak flooring underneath. Mom wasn’t even mad when she saw what we did. 😅
TV story that might make you LOL. My bedroom was in the front of the house and to get nice cross breezes I had the windows open (San Diego) and used verticle blinds which could be partially open to allow those breezes and still give me privacy. There was a cable channel I watched quite often that would switch to soft (and sometimes not so soft) porn on some days at about 10:00 pm or so. I would usually watch TV and fall asleep to it around 9. I would wake up around midnight or so, kind of surprised at what I saw, and change the channel. This happened quite often. One day I was on the sidewalk out in front to discover to my horror that my TV was clearly visable from the street. No one ever complained, but it did make me wonder how many of my neighbors were treated to a "show" and what they must have assumed about me :-) Lesson learned!
Garrett, you have all the answers, as usual! Love your sass and style ❤. I remember shag carpets from my childhood as well, and to compound the horror, they were usually infused with stale cigarette smoke🤢🤢
Check out the floor business and not the business that sells you flooring. I found when I was renovating that the floor guy had the wood that matched the old floors. He bought it in bulk. My contractor could not buy that much!!! Businesses that sold flooring did not have it.
So I got a shaggy area rug about a year ago. I was going for something “soft”. But, you are correct 😂 it sucks! It’s impossible to clean and gets smooshed and ugly so easy. I will be replacing as soon as possible!
I'm so tired of seeing the rustic wood mantle above the electric fireplace. Everyone in new builds does it with the stone in the background and it's really overdone at this point.
LOL it sounds like you have more interesting neighbors than I do 😅 I kind of enjoy critiquing my neighbors decor when taking a walk (you know, when you “accidentally” glance in the window!)
Hi Garrett, I hate shag carpet or wall to wall carpet. I have tile in all my house but was thinking of wood flooring for my 3 bedrooms, or havi g wood floors throughout the house except the bathrooms.
Hello! I could not give an opinion on your specific situation without first seeing the space and discussing it with you. I’m glad to assist if you would like before you spend money on a flooring type which can be significant. Here if you need me! intro.co/garrettlechic
I have an LVP white tile in my kitchen. When I redo the floor in the rest of my house, it will be LVP but look like wood. Probably match the bathrooms to the kitchen, but only because I don’t want too many types of floors. Right now, I have the LVP in the kitchen, cheep pergo wood in most of the house, and vinyl linoleum in the bathrooms. The previous owners wanted to remodel, but used the cheapest materials possible. I don’t have a large budget, but I am trying to make the house look nice.
Honestly, I’d have to see the space and discuss it with you to give an intelligent opinion or comment on what I would do in your home with flooring. Every situation is different and good flooring is quite expensive. 😊😊😊
Thanks for today's content. It was a pleasure to watch over my morning coffee. 5 years ago I moved into a charming little cape cod style home that has good bones and a lot of character, but was horribly dated. Red/yellow/green wall colors, paisley wallpapers, sea foam greens, old plush carpeting, brass fireplace doors..Blekkkk! Transforming it from circus tent to sophisticated has been a slow process. I had to learn my design style, how I would be using the home, respect it's natural charm and spend a lot of time envisioning spaces even if it meant leaving areas a blank canvas for a couple of years. It's tempting to rush off to a big box store and buy a bunch of items to decorate with but resisting was worth it. Tearing out the old carpets, restoring the hardwood underneath, giving the entire house a neutral palate and taking time to wear the house and allow us to get to know each other has been an exercise in patience throughout the design process. Establishing routines, discovering how my husband and I use the house, which pathways we walk each day, and also seeing how guests use it too has helped. Learning which areas people gravitate towards and like to gather, what kind of entertaining we do. There were so many times I thought I had a solid decision only to change my mind again so I'm glad I didn't go out and buy a bunch of stuff at once. Watching channels such as yours has been a valuable resource as I allow inspiration to come in bits and pieces. Fun fact, I'm not a patient woman, so it hasn't been easy and there's still so much to do but I'm enjoying the journey. Thank you for all the ways you've contributed to my inspiration over the past few years.
I LOVE your decorating ideas…you shared your paint color…Asiago…I used it and it is just beautiful in our living room. You are always spot on ….love your vids!
Unfortunately, there aren’t many places to put my tv. When you walk in my house, tv is to the left, (on a beautiful low profile tv console ❤) kitchen is straight ahead and living room is to the right, (sort of the first thing you see 😰) . We did get rid of our once beautiful deep blue thick shag rug, tho, for the reasons you stated. 💀 But I love my home ❤.
I bought some cheap bar stools when we first moved into our home. Worst mistake ever, they were very wobbly and everyone in the house has fallen off of them at least once. (They'll get replaced eventually.)
Agree. We use our counter stools multiple times during a day because our island is the only eating space. I paid almost $900 for each stool and have 6. It took us more than one year to make some savings so we can purchase stools. As a result absolutely stylish comfortable and durable pieces are in our kitchen that everyone loves.
It is funny you mentioned a "lived-in" feel. We built a house and moved in last fall. My husband and I are retired, and we have a place for everything now and I lean more to the minimalist side. Because of those reasons, my house is always spotless and my floors always clean. People who visit all say it looks like it could be in a magazine; however, I have often had a feeling that it is missing the lived-in look.
I have boring 80s wood trim.i so want it gone. I was getting a stressed when Garrett was saying "don't paint wood"! Phew! Then he excluded 80s trim from his statement.
Ok...here's the think that bugs me...when people line their walls with furniture...push everything against the wall to "create space". Ugh!!!! No to bar height table & chairs!!!!
I was born in 1970. I detest anything that even comes close to a shad carpet. And any of the 70s clothes also. 25 years ago, I moved into an apartment that had a shag rug throughout. Long story, but I did not have a choice. It was brown downstairs and then the stairs and the upstairs bedrooms were gold. I didn’t know whether to vacuum it or bail it.
LOL I posted on another of your pages, that when I book a consultation I want to send pictures first. Other wise we will spend all the time talking about the history of just about every thing in my house boat. Old family furniture, stuff from when I lived and traveled in Europe and here and there a bit of Ikea.
Hi Gina! It would be great to speak with you. After you book the consultation, you can then send pictures you want me to review prior to the consultation to my business email address listed on my channel page. They will be forwarded to me.
@@GarrettLeChic Thank you. It is going to be a while. I am still waiting for the houseboat to get here. Then the furniture has to come, but I have learned so much about transporting things on the water. I am so excited to live on her again. But I am trying to look ahead to positive decorating.
I adore and want a brick house! I can’t stand grey floors, grey walls and white trim. I’m also tired of completely open concept. I like “open flow” but walls have purposes.
My Frame tv is one of my best investments bc tvs are such an eye sore.. it has art playing on it all the time and had no choice re. placement. When people walk by they can see Van Gogh or whatever.. as a real estate agent we hate showing the house with the stripper poles and Shrek playing 😂😂 I traumatized myself with a shag carpet and after watching your channel I realized I was kidding myself. My husband has the HEAVIEST step and he ruined the one in my bedroom. Oh well $2k down the drain. Don't make my mistake people, you do not want the shag rug
I think shag carpeting came about because of the trend for Scandinavian design in the mid twentieth century and the traditional Scandinavian rya rugs had a long shaggy pile
Wonderful advice. So well articulated when you said: “Tell me the story of your life.” Yes, truly your home should tell the people who walk through your door “this is me/us.” You had me laughing with the story of your neighbor’s house with the red vibe 🤗 🌸
I don’t care for a television in a living room and I can’t stand them above the fireplace. If you want to put a TV in a living room, then put it in a cabinet and shut the doors when you’re not watching it.
Thanks so much! Most every material can be very nice depending on the space and decor. I would have to see your space to give an intelligent opinion. In design, every situation is different.
Thank you for saying no to painted brick and wood trim especially in older homes!!!! I don’t understand this trend to make natural materials look like plastic. Buying an older home and “updating” it by destroying every ounce of charm and character in it makes no sense at all to me.
Good Morning handsome person☺️ Wow that idea of a black wall for the tv was awesome. I buy it😍 If you walk from my front door you can see the French doors opened into my green backyard and I love that view, like walking towards the nature 🙃 You are a good story teller and that’s for me is a big win win. Agree with the shag rug and trim/brick painting. I wasn’t aware of why nots before meeting you, not that I have them, but totally buy the reasoning. OMG I like that : we vibe, I don’t like these bar stools at all…loll children are beast 😝😝😝 All in all I agree to everything that you mentioned and what I dislike to see when I enter the house is the chaos near the front door because for me that’s where my journey starts to you and your home 🙃 Thank you so much for today’s vlog, it was cuteness overload and I love that for me. Stay healthy, stay blessed, stay loved🤗🥰♥️
Hello 👋 Garrett is definitely the best in Interior design here on RUclips
Wow, thanks! I appreciate your continued support very much. 😊😊😊
The absolute worst is people that leave the TV on when you come to visit. Jeez.
That, and the ones who blast music in their cars and still want to hold a conversation.
A thousand years from now archeologists will dig up our houses and decide that tvs were for "ritual purposes ".
😂
They are!
Thank you from a 77-year-old fan for being so attentive to the needs of the elderly!! We are so often overlooked.
Absolutely! Glad to help.

Backless bar stools freak me out. I’m always worried that I will fall off backwards and crack my skull.

Around 1987 while our parents were out of the house, my sister and I started pulling up the green shag carpet. There was good oak flooring underneath. Mom wasn’t even mad when she saw what we did. 😅
Putting shag carpet over nice hardwood floors is a crime. And yet people did it I don’t know what they were thinking.
😆😆😆
Garrett, you have all the answers, as usual! Love your sass and style ❤. I remember shag carpets from my childhood as well, and to compound the horror, they were usually infused with stale cigarette smoke🤢🤢
Thanks so much!
Why I love having my husband’s grandfather sculptures throughout the house
🤣🤣🤣
@@GarrettLeChic it’s a work in progress, to be sure!
Shag, I used to have to vacuum a certain way to make nice lines😮
I would definitely trust you with shag because I know you are such a capable person. 🤗🤗🤗
Glad you are enjoying!
I LOVE your decorating ideas…you shared your paint color…Asiago…I used it and it is just beautiful in our living room. You are always spot on ….love your vids!
Thank you so much!
You had me giggling through the whole video. Love your idea with black background with the tv. I never considered that.
Great content again! I love your tips and I love how you deliver it! You are such a gem! I am so glad I found your channel!
Thanks so much!!
Looking forward to your insight. 🌞
Awesome! Thanks for being here.
Woo hoo I’m early! Garrett, love you and all your pups, both here and across the rainbow bridge!!!
Thanks so much! I appreciate your support. I’m learning that spaniels are quite different than bulldogs. Both great. 🐕🐕🪽🪽
We had wall to wall green shag 🤢
My shag carpet trauma was from my first college apartment. The previous tenant had a dog with bowel problems. 'Nough said....
😩😩😩
@@carolnetols8457 I'm shuddering as I imagine that minefield
Ugh!!!😮
Can’t wait, I’ll be there!
Congrats and thank you so much! I appreciate your support.
I bought some cheap bar stools when we first moved into our home. Worst mistake ever, they were very wobbly and everyone in the house has fallen off of them at least once. (They'll get replaced eventually.)
☑️☑️☑️
Agree. We use our counter stools multiple times during a day because our island is the only eating space. I paid almost $900 for each stool and have 6. It took us more than one year to make some savings so we can purchase stools. As a result absolutely stylish comfortable and durable pieces are in our kitchen that everyone loves.
The next level beyond the giant TV as the focal point is the giant TV above the fireplace.
😊😊😊
We had a green shag growing up that was named Oscar the Grouch. I don’t want it to ever come back into style.
Most of my furniture is second hand, so almost everything has a bit of a story.
👍👍👍
Lool I love the extra sass and shades thrown today 🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
I hate all white and small scattered cushions or small picture frames. It's always the people that do all tree
Here!!!!❤❤❤❤
Yay!!!😀
Authentic!
Hey, Garrett! 😊
Morning! Thanks for being here.
I’ve wondered why the HGTV remodelers paint brick so often. Crazy.
Sorry to hear that! I do love the frame TV. We have them.
Glad you enjoyed!
I don’t care for a television in a living room and I can’t stand them above the fireplace. If you want to put a TV in a living room, then put it in a cabinet and shut the doors when you’re not watching it.
Look, at least you have exciting neighbors 😂😂
Not really. Very quiet guard gated community. Nice people you hardly ever see.
How do you feel about cork flooring? Absolutely LOVE your videos!! 💓💓💓💓
Thanks so much! Most every material can be very nice depending on the space and decor. I would have to see your space to give an intelligent opinion. In design, every situation is different.
@@GarrettLeChic Thank you!!! Once I get my ideas in order, I plan to book a personal consultation! 🤩 Have a beautiful day!
@@jsmith4497 Glad to help!
Agree 💯 percent . TVs need to be disguised or covered when off. They are ugly.
Thank you for saying no to painted brick and wood trim especially in older homes!!!! I don’t understand this trend to make natural materials look like plastic. Buying an older home and “updating” it by destroying every ounce of charm and character in it makes no sense at all to me.
Jus say No to carpeting.
☑️☑️☑️
Good Morning handsome person☺️
Wow that idea of a black wall for the tv was awesome. I buy it😍
If you walk from my front door you can see the French doors opened into my green backyard and I love that view, like walking towards the nature 🙃
You are a good story teller and that’s for me is a big win win.
Agree with the shag rug and trim/brick painting. I wasn’t aware of why nots before meeting you, not that I have them, but totally buy the reasoning.
OMG I like that : we vibe, I don’t like these bar stools at all…loll children are beast 😝😝😝
All in all I agree to everything that you mentioned and what I dislike to see when I enter the house is the chaos near the front door because for me that’s where my journey starts to you and your home 🙃
Thank you so much for today’s vlog, it was cuteness overload and I love that for me. Stay healthy, stay blessed, stay loved🤗🥰♥️
Sounds lovely! Glad you enjoyed the video. See you Thursday. 🐕🐕🪽🪽

Thoughts on armoire for TV? I’m feeling pretty dated but hate having it out.
I'd have to see it and the space to give an intelligent option. Every situation is different.
