    Idea for a future show. Take an Eastcoast guitar out of stock. Load it with better pups (lollar, bareknuckle, whatever) give it a setup and then blindfold test it against an off-the-shelf mid-range Fender or whatever that cost ten times the price and see which for example Rob, Rabea or Pete prefers.
    Then you also got a B-stock Eastcoast you could auction off for charity.

    For those of you wondering, the radius is about 16, so very flat. Also more like a D shaped neck. about 200 american dollars including shipping for the lowest model. The tuners are not great (what you find on most cheap guitars), but it's an easy replacement over time. What I found nice is that the pickups are actually decent for the price, which is pretty important. The review I watched, the frets were pretty sharp on their hands, so they would have to fixed if you don't want to maim yourself. This could be good or bad depending on who you are, but I wanted to give some info that's not too readily for my american buddies or anyone.

    For maybe the first time on this channel, I felt like this video had misleading statements. It suggested that Squier Bullet and Classic Vibe guitars don't stay in tune - not necessarily true. It suggested that the quality of the wood in a guitar doesn't matter - not true (think warping over time.) This video had the vibe of telling people "Hey, there's not much difference between these two guitars." They didn't actually come out and SAY that, but read the comments here and you'll see that some people took that message away. I liked the first video on the EastCoast guitars - it seemed real and genuine to me. This video felt like a pitch from a sales dude at Guitar Center. For all of their praise, neither one of these guys would be caught dead on stage with one of these. And they picked the perfect target - people hate the Silver Sky because they hate John Mayer and they think PRS guitars are way overpriced.

    • @davedavem
      @davedavem 5 лет назад +1

      Rabea (of the East Coast): "[I'm] definitely surprised that it stays in tune, sounds decent, plays alright."
      Pete: "... You have to remember ... 8, 9, 10 [year old] coming into the shop 'Mummy, Daddy, I wanna a guitar for Christmas.'"
      Then Rabea recounts two stories where a Bullet didn't stay in tune - he didn't make a sweeping statement that they never do.
      All that's fine, isn't it? Give the viewers a little credit, they're not idiots and it's obvious the presenters are discussing a budget piece of kit for beginners, not pro kit.

    Staying in tune and being comfortable to play or the two biggest things for a starter guitar. If the guitar doesn't inspire you to play, it'll just sit there collecting dust till it goes in the boot sale.
    I think most people would say, for a musical instrument, ninety nine quid (plus an amp for a bit more) is minimal risk. If whoever the starting guitarist is doesn't take to it, you're not out that much. Me thinks there will be quite a few more guitars beneath Christmas trees this season.

    The thing is with these cheap guitars is that when it starts off playing and sounding decent you can tweak it to make it as good as you like without worrying about ruining your investment. If you pay £2300 for a guitar you are going to be a bit more hesitant to do that.
    For instance, if you want some more of the biting trebble of the PRS you could fit a treble boost circuit as used by Eric Clapton or put in a new set of pickups. Each of those would cost around the £50 mark to start with. You could tweak the neck by getting the edges rolled and sand off the finish from the back which would probably cost about £80 to be done by a pro or about £15 - £20 if you could do the work yourself. It is the kind of thing you can just make your own knowing that if everything went wrong you could always just buy another one.

    Love the vids, love you guys, love the playing. Always very entertaining. All the same, I don't think this was a fair assignment to Rabia or Danish Pete. If the PRS doesn't spank the EC in every possible way except price, then PRS should hang their heads in shame. Having to pull that back and try to balance making the EC look good while not making the PRS appear overpriced isn't realistic, and it doesn't really help your point that spending 100 GBP on an EC guitar (set up by Andertons) is a better value than spending 80 on one out of a catalog house with bad strings and a crap setup. The parents who are going to be buying EC's for Casper and Jane don't know any better, and that's the message I think you're trying to share. It's 100 vs 80 cost. Not 100 vs 2300.

    I think longevity of a good setup would be the big difference; especially once you start using the tremolo over a few weeks or a month...if those guitars can hold up to daily playing and only need to be adjusted as often as the more expensive one's they really are a deal. I've always found that over time, you eventually end up spending as much money for a cheap guitar in upgrades, extra setups and mental anguish as you would for a pro model that is very reliable over the same period of time. That would be a good test how long does it take this cheap guitar to cost as much as an expensive guitar...

  • @RantVoidTiggs

    Regarding demoing these into pricey gear, you do still raise a couple of very valid points.
    Firstly, if anything, it highlights the quality different between entry-level and top-of-the-range guitars that may not be quite as noticeable if you plugged them both into a sub-£100 amp.
    Knowing whether or not you'll have to replace the guitar as soon as they get a somewhat better amp
    Secondly, if have a lot of gear yourself and getting your kid their first own guitar, you may well be more comfortable letting them plug into a (half-)decent amp then letting them loose on your grand-plus Fender Strat.
    Also, as a "perpetual beginner" myself, one thing I can say is that when I'm looking into budget guitars, "Stays In Tune" is a major selling point.
    Very little is worse than being partway through a practice drill and one of your strings sounding progressively more out of tune when it started off near-perfect.

    All you have to do is look at the pole height of the PRS P-U's to see the difference in Quality. I bet the tuners cost more than the EastCoast. I obviously prefer the PRS in tone as well as playability. I do wonder how well the trem system holds up on the EastCoast and how well it holds up in a year or two with regular playing, how well it copes with temp changes - whether you get fret sprout, warping etc.
    For £100, it does seem like a 'great' guitar for the money and a lot better than some guitars for around that price. If my kid was interested in learning, I would possibly be tempted as a 'starter' guitar. As a musician though, I doubt anyone would buy it as their 'primary' instrument. Like I said though, it doesn't seem bad for the price and probably competes with guitars that are double that but I wouldn't sell a Silver Sky (if I had one) to buy an EastCoast GS100 and whatever else I could with the money left over.
    I appreciate I am looking at this from the perspective of a guitarist (with 3 PRS core guitars in my collection) and not from the perspective of a parent looking to buy a kid their first guitar for Christmas. Its not a guitar I would buy for myself and would spend more to get the 'quality' locking tuners, pu's, rolled frets, excellent nut, decent floating trem, decent, long lasting input jack, great pots etc etc.

    A few suggestions for future videos while I enjoy the outro jam:
    *) Mention what fret sizes are on guitars, especially for models aimed at new players. Alternatively put this information on all guitars on ye official Anderton[e]s website.
    *) Perhaps consider whether a given instrument is a good representative of its class. What I mean by this, consider for instance the EastCoast GL120. Would that model be a good 'test' guitar if one wanted an inexpensive LP style guitar to see if you like Les Pauls in general (as a new player testing various instruments). In my admittedly limited experience I for one needs to 'live' with a style of guitar for a while until I can definitely say whether or not I am into, say, Strats, or what have you. It isn't sufficient to just test an instrument in a shop, as I have found I can 'warm' to a style of guitar when I have it at home. The opposite can happen as well, so...

    I've always said that money doesn't buy a better tone in most cases but it does buy a better feeling, inspiring guitar! My old epiphone with classic 57 plus pickups soynded just as good as my gibson lp traditional but where it lacked was the finish, quality, feeling and inspiration but tone wise was exactly the same!!

    @michaelsokolow9372 5 лет назад

    How much of the tone is coming from the Victory Amp and Dane pedal though? Glad it stays in tune, but I feel like a better test for the "first guitar" would do play it through a budget amplifier, as well.

      Actually, that's what I like about these kinds of comparison videos.
      Yes, the higher-end multi-thousand guitars sound much better. And they're what you aspire towards being able to afford, and justify getting, one day.
      But knowing that there are very affordable starter guitars that are still capable of making nice enough sounds whilst you practice and/or save up is nice.

    Guys, please, please, PLEASE(!) do a video where you play a starter guitar through a price range of amps.
    People are gonna buy these and expect them to sound like they do on your videos and they just won't - because you are playing them through £2K+ amp & pedals.

    The Diddario strings seem like they help. Not the strings themselves, but the fact that it gets set up with decent strings on it, rather than set up with crap strings. Because then when you put on EBs etc. the original set up will be redundant.

    Well they both sound okay. But the PRS is clearer. Less buzz than I hear from the Eastcoast, in fact there's no buzz, it could be a Les Paul on the neck with that sort of solid, thick projection. But for those tiny prices, they are better than even a Squire for a beginner I think. But that being said, someone getting an Eastcoast will probs be going for a cheap amp that's super bright. So it's gonna sound like a freaking beehive. So I hope those amps the Eastcoast guitars come with are made with a decent treble control.

    I always think there is a missed market with Mk 2s better pickups/tuners with bag (maybe) etc extra £50 or so from factory/seller, not diy at home upgrades, I would go that route every time.

  • @lance134679
    @lance134679 5 лет назад

    I would spend another 50-100 pounds to have the EastCoast guitar set up by a good luthier, including fret dressing. I think getting the neck feeling nice can go a long way to making a cheap guitar seem like an expensive one if it's decently made to begin with.

    Here is my advice for the EastCoast Stratocaster and Telecaster style guitars, I can only comment and give advice on those. The GT100 and GS100 are good guitars, and can actually be great guitars after a few tweaks and setup.
    - Replace stock tuners with locking or vintage style tuners (great locking tuners can be had for $45 USD, good vintage tuners for $25)
    - The nut, the stock nut is rather sad and the one installed on the GT100 had a extra unfinished cut like the installer made a mistake. Also, the grooves seemed to be too small for 11's so I would have replaced them regardless. Stock nut is cheap plastic. ($6 - $15 USD depending on your personal preference)
    - Tremolo block upgrade (not as necessary but it is lighter than the Squier Affinity blocks and I was not just happy with it at all, luckly I had a spare. (A nice steel or brass block is $15 - $30 USD depending on preference )
    - Better string trees ( $10 USD ) because on both of the EastCoast guitars ( Telecaster / GT100 and Stratocaster / GS100) I received last Friday the string trees had rough edges and rough inside path, could harm or decrease life of the strings. You can actually fix the stock ones with some super light grit sandpaper but upgraded string trees are always great, even on Mexican Strats.
    The pickups on the GS100 sound similar to actual Fender Tex Mex set to me, at least the neck and bridge pickups. I don't have a middle to compare them with. But I did compare them to my 91 American Stratocaster with Fender Tex Mex pickups installed. No need to change pickups unless you dislike the stock tone of the GS100, but the stock pickups themselves are far from junk. But many Strat players do like the overly scooped mid sound (Mayer kind of tone) so it may be something you would like to do, but not necessary. The telecaster pickups do the job, they sound like any standard Fender Telecaster. Neither of them sound bad at all.

    From Leo: Great test and review. The jams are top notch, thanks for sharing your talent. The "magic" of guitar design is no longer a secret. EVERYBODY knows what makes a guitar play right. Modern manufacturing methods has made guitar building very efficient. It is amazing what a $100 will buy. Of course most of the more pricey guitars ARE better, but the laws of diminishing returns applies. I bought my first new guitar in 1971. The choice then was Fender, gibson, or unplayable crap. That is no longer the case. Except for the bottom line toys, most entry level stuff is very playable. If a player does not have the chops to make a $100-$200 play, he probably does not have the chops if you had him a $2000 guitar either.

    I think any guitarist starting out should play and learn with cheap guitars. My reason being when they trying to learn a song and get the tone of artists using much more expensive gear, they will be forced to develop their hand techniques rather than rely on the tone of an expensive guitar, amps or pedals to get them that tone.

    This might be the best guitar ever made for beginners but, this should be marketed for the kids that don't have musician parents.

      I am a huge believer in buying inexpensive guitars and modding them or mid priced guitars, all used and playing good amps and cabs.I have on 3000 dollar guitar, the other 14 don't equal that in what I paid. But, I have three 100 dollar heads and combos and five more heads that cost 6-900. Guitars can only sound so good. My 75 dollar used squier strat that i modded for another 200 sounds as good or better than the mexican strat i got used for 300. I'd much rather spend my money on my amps. Also, the best way to get a killer amp cheap and still under full warranty is when it gets discontinued. I got the Egnater tweaker 88 head for 450 because it was put on clearance at 50% off by Sweetwater. You cannot beat that

    For these cheap guitars you should offer a 'tune up' service before they buy it, where you file fret ends, level the frets, change the nut etc to make the playability feel like a more expensive guitar
