I love these ideas that people like me (a power-tool weenie) can do. I have chickens and we converted a lawn tractor shed. We insulated the walls because we get such cold winters (-30) here in the mountains.
Oh wow, that is COLD! We get single digits but nothing too crazy! I’m definitely not the best builder guy so I like to find easy ways of doing things 😂
I have a similar setup with an old Suncast shed too. I added the wire to the outside of the shed to avoid getting wasp nests down in the walls. Great video 👍🏻
Can you show how you did that. I’m not understanding. Those wasps get everywhere. Sometimes I can barely go do my lawn they’re everywhere as well as in their run but I managed to get that nest down. I just don’t get how wire around the shed will prevent them from getting inside they fit thru everything.
Love this, I also have a shed coop and I love seeing other peoples ways of doing things! I would say, lowering your roosts would be a good idea regardless of where your ventilation is; jumping from such a height can lead to injuries and bumble foot.
Cool idea! I think you will need more though. I took the plexiglass out of the windows on mine and replaced it with hardware cloth, secured with zip ties. It’s going. To get really hot in there during the summer.
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead After watching this video (great idea by the way!) I was also going to suggest taking out the plexiglass and replace with the mesh ❤
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead you don’t think it will be to cold when temps get into the teens for them. I don’t lock mine in at this time their entrance to their shed is inside of their run I haven’t figured out an easy way to put a little door in so that they can go in and out yet they just go through the sliding door area. I put a screen to cover 3/4 way but also it’s a problem for me to enter daily to get the eggs I have to move the run back so I can get inside. Any ideas appreciated.
I hate it when people say chickens can handle pretty cold temperatures. They are jungle foul not winter foul. Key word jungle environment. Even though people force them to handle it they have no choice they don't like it at all when it's really cold. This is why there combs get damaged in the cold. I see a lot of chicken videos with comb damage to their chickens from winters. People don't care enough to prevent this damage. They just say, OH the chickens can handle it. Such wrong thinking.
Hey neighbor,, literally as I live in SE Idaho not super far from you! I’m just wondering how the vents worked out during the coldest winter months. We have got down to -30 but it’s not usually that cold. I bought a shed just like this to house my birds this year and I’m worried they won’t be warm enough this winter.
I have the same thing but it is fully insulated. I’m not sure how or why I would add ventilation.. maybe an air filter. On my shed, there is a layer of foam underneath foil bubble wrap insulation. They do not eat the foil but if they see any styrofoam, they will go for it. They will also tear up cardboard so don’t use that to cover the foam. I also have a small temperature controlled heater mounted inside, which keeps them above 60. Most of my chickens are from Indonesia, which average temp is 70f. Raising chickens is a learning process but most people take a lazy, careless approach.
Considering emptying my own shed and converting it for chickens! I'd prefer to raise them in a mobile tractor and put them on new grass daily, but the property we're currently on doesn't have enough square footage. Thanks for the tips!
We are the same way, I would love to have the room to have a tractor for them. We have a large garage so we didn’t need a shed to store things.. so we got a shed to store chickens 😂. Thanks for watching!
I know 😭. This is the biggest growing season we have had so the last couple weeks it’s been nothing but garden prep and planting every extra second of the day. After memorial I’ll have some time to get it done!
Great video, we bought one of these sheds for my chickens a few months ago. Hi was wondering how to give them more ventilation, thank you plus we are going to put a drop down door like yours.
Technically I could, but I would still want another hole on the other side for cross ventilation! But I could just screen that window up and use that for sure.
I’m not sure how bad it gets there, but here we hover close to 0 degrees Fahrenheit and get some pretty heavy winds coming off the Rocky Mountains. With that weather our birds have done great! When I first got chickens we used to use a heat lamp.. and then realized it was a safety hazard and chickens can actually handle REALLY cold weather pretty well!
Hey neighbor. New subscriber here. We're in central Kansas and will be building a coop and getting ready for chicks next year. Thanks for the details and you're more of a craftsman than you give yourself credit for.l far, it looks like we'll be going with this for our first coop. Keep the videos coming.
That’s a good one clean out my shed to put my chickens inside I’m gonna do the ventilation holes in one side on the other side I’m installing a intake fan for fresh air in one side is gonna come out to the ventilation holes good idea thank you
Coop is still doing great! We even had to drag it across the yard with ropes and a car in order for it to be legal 😂. I couldn’t be happier with the setup!
And since making this video we have been over 100 Fahrenheit for weeks now. It’s hot in there, but much better than what it was! The only vents I will add now is to take out the windows and replace them with screen.
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead thank you so much for this info!!! Trying to find a half decent shed on fb marketplace that isn’t crazy expensive. Thanks again!!! I’ll be checking out your other videos too! Appreciate the feedback and knowledge
We just finished a similar resin shed coop. Instead of putting the plexiglass windows on, we've used double-sided adhesive to cover them with window screens until it gets cold.
We ended up doing something similar! We went with a quarter inch wire mesh and drilled them onto the wall and held them there with a screw and washer, it works great! How does the tape hold up? That stuff is pretty strong if you get the surface clean before hand!
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead So far, so good! I like the idea of the quarter inch wire mesh too, though - I'm thinking we could just swap it out for the original plexiglass.
Does it need any kind of insulation for the cold weather. Not sure if it would make it to warm in the summer days. Great videos by the way. Thank you for sharing. And where do I get that piece to cut the holes and cut the door?
Here is the link to the 3” hole saw amzn.to/3C66sPD Here is a link to a saws all that is what I would use to cut a window into a shed amzn.to/3poyRZy As for the insulation… that would probably make it too hot in the summer. Chickens do MUCH better in cold than in the heat. If I were you I would definitely build it to be cool in the summer rather than warm in the winter. I hope that helps 😂. In the winter it’s easy to add a deep mulch layer and things like that to keep it warm, but there isn’t a whole lot you can do besides ventilation to make it cool in the summer. Good luck on your build!
I was just reading the comments on the circular attachment you sent me up above they said it spins around on the drill how do I keep it from doing that. Do I need to get anything else to keep attachment intact while cutting the holes out?

Well I’m happy you stumbled across that video! It’s funny because I’ve always made videos about growing peppers and finally decided on making videos around all the things I do to make our own food and the coop shed was the very first video I posted that branched out from peppers and it took off. I can’t tell you how much fun it’s been to be able to create videos around everything I do, rather than one tiny part of it! It’s been a blast haha!
This is a good idea adding ventilation. Maybe caulk the inside of the hole so it doesn’t get wet and possibly moldy inside.
i agree, water will run down between the layers and mold
