Thanks for the review! Most people seem to be obsessing over the camera bodies that leaves consumers like myself wondering which to purchase. I went with a Z6 with the kit and the FTZ adapter, this is a pricey lens for what it is but it is the most portable.. I look forward to your 50mm review if you decide to do one thanks.
The bokeh is not that offending I've seen a comparison with the Canon 35 f1.8, and it's night and day, the Canon bokeh is truly nervous. The only small 35 equivalent I prefer to this one is the mighty Fuji 23 f1.4 R. What a bokeh on this one.
Why is every video recommending FTZ adapter VS the native lense? The Adapter alone is almost $300 and the other two 35mm are not as good as the Z mount. People who buy the Nikon Z7 should not complain about $50 or $100 difference of poorer lenses. Just don't be so cheap and get the better lense.
And the point a lot of reviewers are missing: Z lenses are designed as hybrids for photo/video. Their properties for video are something ANY f-mount lenses (nikon or other brands) have, and of course very little reviewers are talking about them.
i am running still with the 1.4g on the Z6...there is something in 1.4g and its bokeh...the adapter is meh but i like the look....would be good to see side by side comparison of the same scene, to check the out of focus rendition
@Mathieu Gasquet, When you say it may make more sense to invest in the adaptor for the time being, do mean you expect Z mount lens prices to drop, or are you suggesting we wait for a faster lens, which while more expensive, would offer better value?
It's mainly to see how the the system is going to evolve and if there will be lenses with a more interesting price/value ratio. The adapter also makes sense if you are interested in using other lenses on the Z cameras, especially those are not available for the Z mount yet.
I plan on getting the Z6 to produce 4K content on my channel. I'd like to hear more detailed review on the video aspect of this lens. Can you do a sound test? Breathing focus test?
IF you had to choose between the “best” lenses for manual focusing for the Z6 (ie using the Rhino Arc II / Focus slider) would you opt for: Nikkor Z 35mm 1.8S ($850) AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1.4G ($1500!) Sigma ART 35mm 1.4DG HSM ($650) Sigma has been recommended, as the Nikkor is overpriced... but - while fitting the Z lens directly onto the Z6 - has slight advantages... I heard you can’t EXACTLY pull focus with Z lenses based on exact position of the manual focus ring??? It’s electronic and relies on autofocus to correct.
The Z lens has a fly by wire focus ring, so it is not the best for manual focus when doing video because the focus won't always match the position of the ring.
Hello, can you investigate something? I see reactions about shutter shock and you must enable electronic first curtain shutter to avoid that, is that true?
Yes, it's better to use EFCS at lower shutter speeds to eliminate shutter shock. However, there's no restrictions on it now. You can use it in all modes, unlike the DSLRs. The latest 2.0 firmware also includes an "Auto" EFCS setting where the camera will automatically switch EFCS on/off depending on the shutter speed.
No for two reasons: the mount is not the same (larger than the one on the D750), and the lens is designed to work on a shorter flange distance (mount to sensor) than DSLRs.
Thanks for review.. 1. How do you compare this Nikkor 35/1.8 vs Canon RF 35/1.8? I suspect Nikkor is a better glass.. 2. Finally did you end up buying Nikon Z with this lens ? Thank you
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank you.. My suggestion for you is to do MLR comparison "cross system" too, example 24-70 Zoom (or 35mm EQ) of FF, APSC and m43, it will be highly beneficial.. Thank you..
@@severgun It is not a kit lens. It is high quality lens with outstanding MFT charts, corner sharpness an weather sealing. It is also expensive. I have it and the 24-70 S f/4 and both are sharper, especially in the corners wide open than, say, the 24-70 2.9 E and G models which are highly praised and 3 times more expensive. I have 3 24-70s lenses and this small f/4 is the best of all. My G version cost me $1900 and the E version was $2400 but this S mount lenses was $600.It is a great match to the Z7 or 6 in size and weight
Great review but soooo boring. Canon have at least released some interesting glass. Of course this tells the lie of mirrorless smaller cameras but BIGGER lenses.... 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
So far, the new/native Z mount lenses are looking to be winners. Very high quality optically.
The 24-70 f/4 S-lens is sharper than any of my F-mount primes! And it's a kit zoom! This new line is amazing! Can't wait to see what comes out next.
Nikon Z6 + 1.8/35 S = fun!
nice and thanks. Love to see more z lens review in the future

Thanks, hopefully we'll test the 50mm at the beginning of next year.
The Z6 with the 35mm are in my crosshairs. Looks damn good
For what it is? If you think an ordinary 1.4 is anything close to this you are wrong.
Great review. Also high quality video and editing.
thanks!
That lens is huge for a fast 35

The adapter is typically free now with camera purchase. Even before it was only $150 with camera.

sorry i don't have the lens anymore.
When you say it hunts in lowlight - does it eventually aquire focus.
Yes, it just slow down the process a little.

Mathieu Gasquet Yes, David Busch did confirm that for me and I am switching to legacy lenses for my Rhino Slider/Focus pulling shots
I have a Z6 + FTZ + 35 1.8G ED, if I put 35 1.8Z, will I get something more in terms of resolution and sharpness?
Our article here could be of help ;-)

How it does with video?
Mathieu, is this lens also great for outside vlogging including arm’s length gimbal self shots? Thanks much!
Difficult to say without trying first. I think 35mm should be enough but I know other v-loggers prefer a wider angle such as 28 or 24mm.
Mathieu Gasquet Thanks so much.
Hello, can you investigate something? I see reactions about shutter shock and you must enable electronic first curtain shutter to avoid that, is that true?
Yes it is, I have shutter shock on my Z7 and the electronic first curtain helps a lot. Just don’t use it at fast shutter speeds (1/500s and faster)
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons Thank you! So, you mean, its best not to use efc at 1/500 or higher? Why not? Greetings!
Yes because it can create unpleasant bokeh or shift the exposure of your image (one side can appear darker, especially above 1/2000s)

Good job! I need this lens. This one or the new 24-70 mm F2.8 when it comes.
Cristian Calhoun - Good job. I now have both and they are tack sharp.

I haven't tested the RF 35 1.8 yet.
We have the Z7 with the 24-70 kit lens, the 35 was on loan and I won't buy it for now.
