I drove over the original Tappan Zee Bridge once when driving back to Long Island from upstate New York. As much as I hate driving over the Verrazzano Bridge, nothing terrified me as much as the original Tappan Zee. Back in 2019, I drove on the replacement cable stay bridge and it was like night and day.

If anything i found, and still find, the Verrenzano as a marvel, and not scary in the slightest. When i was younger, i found the Delaware River Turnpike Toll Bridge soll sucking, even though its not that bad

The last time I crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge was in 1961 when my grandfather and I visited a friend in New Jersey.

@tpir1972 the bridge and the rest of the 287 corridor in NJ/NY is an alternate for traffic between the mid-Atlantic and New England trying to bypass NYC.

@bronsonblack yea, we can only hope! i still doubt that the project will get underway that soon, even with government help though. according to a reliable personnal source, since the project is so massive and expensive, contractors are trying different ways to bid on different sections of the project (in other words, there probably won't be a single general contractor for the whole job as there usually is), which in itself will complicate and delay groundbreaking until a later date...

Ugh! I really did not like this bridge. Kind of scary... Having gone to college in Westchester County and sometimes driving up from Mercer County, NJ, I would take the Geo Wash Brg.

the story behind the tappan zee bridge was built outside of the 50 mile radius of the port authority so NY state not the port authority get the money and also the Governor at the time did not want the port authority hands on the revenue

It's a good thing they replaced this bridge. I wouldn't have driven across this even if someone paid me! It was an ugly looking bridge too.
