With a narrative steeped in duplicity and conspiratorial intrigue, “In Westminster Halls” offers a unique speculative journey into the world of Jane Austen. This bold exploration delves into the existential issue of slavery. Set against the backdrop of Regency privilege, sexual nuance, and callous indifference, Jacobson's masterful storytelling will captivate you, leaving you yearning for more. It's a portrayal of Meryton’s beloved characters like you've never seen. Robert W. Smith, award-winning author of A Long Way from Clare In 1807, a dark stain marred British society. It wasn't Napoleon or the War. The slave trade divided Britons along economic and moral lines. In Westminster Halls is a tale that unites Longbourn, Pemberley, and Matlock in a mission to end the trafficking of human souls. Powerful forces are determined to silence Bennet, while Wickham is sent to manipulate Darcy. Amidst mystery, danger, and politics, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy navigate mutual prejudice and willful pride, striving for a future in a world where all are free. Their journey is a testament to love’s power. In Westminster’s Halls seeks to fill Austen’s great silence on slavery. The book speculates, with a touch of audacity, how Austen’s beloved characters would have behaved if true-life events were part of Pride and Prejudice.

WHAT?!?! Darcy calls Elizabeth a loose woman and asks how much she is?!?!
END of Novel. No coming back from THAT! Not even if he single-handedly stopped slavery. Wish we had heard her answer him straight away. It would have been really good.
By the time she does answer him it will be soooo satisfying to see her pin his ears back.

One can read a bit about the issue of slavery in Austen's "Mansfield Park". The protagonist's uncle and his eldest son spend some time at the uncle's sugar plantation in the West Indies. This aspect of the book is emphasized a bit more in one of the film adaptations of the book.

Yeah. In the preface for this book, Don discusses that along with some of Jane Austen's other possible motivations in writing about, and sometimes not writing about, the issues of the day.

Hi Benjamin. I’m currently listening to this on audible and am really enjoying it so far. I’m at the end of Chapter 30 where our Lizzy is overhearing and of course misinterpreted a conversation. There is an editing issue that needs addressed though. Instead of the bits and pieces of conversation all we hear is “INSERT THE THING HERE”. Luckily the book itself is on KU so I could read the conversation. I have no idea where to go to report it. Big fan of your voice though :) Keep reading!

Oh, if someone had spoken to my daughter like that, I would end up in jail.

ABSOLUTELY agreed. The original slight at Meryton assembly does not hold a CANDLE to Darcy's appalling words in this variation.
