Actually, she wrote the song I believe after seeing the 1939 movie starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. The song references the narrative of the film which was different than the book. She was just 18 when she wrote and recorded it and 19 in the video you showed.
She is in the Guinness Book of Records as the first woman to write and perform every song in a million selling album for her debut album The Kick Inside.
But if you want to appreciate her talent for when she really was very young, play the heartbreakingly beautiful song, The Man With The Child In His Eyes, also from the same album which she also wrote when she was just 13 or 14.
      It is just so beautiful.
I'm in my 50's and I can't help but get emotional listening to Kate and especially listening to her Before The Dawn live album recorded in 2014.
      I wasn't there alas 😔
A friend of Kate's brother Paddy managed to give some of her amateur recordings to Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd and he called around to her house where he says the 16 year old Kate played him 40 or 50 of her home recordings.
He brought some of them back to the studio where PF were recording Wish You Were Here and played them for some people there and she got signed.
Dave and Kate have remained close friends since.
Loving your channel more all the time.
Keep doing what you are doing 👍

@@garycoates4987 I won't argue with you. I remember hearing quotes from other people on TV and radio that it was inspired by the original movie version and that she had not read the actual book at the time she wrote the song.
But I must look for an interview with the lady in question and see if can find that quote myself.
Actually just looked on the Kate Bush Encyclopedia online and it says that she wrote it in 1977 after seeing just the last 10 minutes of the 1967 BBC dramatisation...
I'll go with that for now and apologies for quoting inaccurate information.
Honestly, it's not very long ago I heard a serious music journo on the radio quoting her inspiration as the original movie version.

Wuthering Heights was Kate's very first single. Like all the tracks she wrote for her first album The Kick Inside she wrote this track at a very young age. Naturally, she was inspired by Emily Brontës novel of the same name. However, when Kate wrote the song she had never read the novel. Her actual inspiration was a TV movie adaptation of the novel of which she caught the last few minutes of it. Then she read the novel. When it was about time to release her first single the record company executives wanted another song called James and the Cold Gun to be the first single. Kate, who at the time was only 19, stood up to them and wanted Wuthering Heights to be the first single. After a while, the record executives obliged to Kate's request but not because they were successfully persuaded by her but because they thought that Kate was going to be mistaken and was going to realize that when it came to choosing singles they were the ones who knew better and not Kate and she was gonna learn the hard way. Boy, they couldn't be any more wrong! Wuthering Heights was realized and BAM! It went to #1 in the U.K. and it was a big hit in other countries as well. Kate became an overnight success. The record executives had to eat their words and allowed Kate to choose her next single which was The Man with the Child in His Eyes (this song was the one that got her her record contract at the time) and it went to #6 in the U.K. Not only she showed courage to stand up to such sharks as the record executives are but she showed them that besides being an artist she had an eye for choosing hit singles.

So glad that you love this song and video. Yes, Kate Bush went under the radar in the U.S. 1980's-1990's. I think it is because she is very very very very British. Her sensibilities, her style is not quickly accessible to most Americans. You are right, Americans missed the ball with Kate for a long time and it is our loss. Kate is stunning, talented, unique and oodles of lovely. I never met her but I have to believe that she is an angel. She seems like such a decent, kind and lovely woman. She is getting recognition for "Running Up That Hill" from that TV show, the name escapes me. But she is DEFINITELY worth checking out more, she has a lot of music out there over her career. Thank you for doing this.

Mrs, Bush was 19 when she wrote and recorded the song. Back then she was simply unique in her talent and she is still unique today. She was always special. The title and story of this masterpiece is about another english masterpiece, the sad story between Cathy and Heathcliff in the book "Wuthering Heights" of Emily Bronte. Recommendation! Read all seven of the Bronte Sisters Books - it´s well worth the money.

Song written by Catherine (Kate) Bush herself at the age of 18 years old. To my understanding she was 19 years old when she appeared on this video.
On the movie the young girls name is also named Catherine who was portrayed by Juliette Binoche.

Few suggestions if I may. React to 'The Man with a Child in His Eyes' - 'Army Dreamers' - 'This Woman's Work' (try to hold back the tears on that one!) and - 'Moment's of Pleasure'
Thanks and have a lovely day!

Kate trained as a dancer with Lynsey Kemp who was also very influential in David Bowies early career,Many of her songs are based on classic literature. Nobody is like kate welcome to the Kate Bush rabbit hole. xxx

Kate Bush studied dramatic art, so the dance routine was very carefully choreographed. The song is based on the book of the same name, (also a film) Cathy is a ghost returning to her lover. To really understand the song and the overall performance you should look up the book or film, only then will you get the full power of this performance and just how clever she is.

What a hapy day watching, and listening, ( at the same time) two "Beauties". TheOne, singing and dancing (at the 80's),and The Other, describing what she's watching at 2020. The effect is DOUBLE.(reinforced)!!!

"You can't put your finger on it"... I'd say her voice is strange in the sense that it can go from crisp to mellow, warm to sharp and soft to almost raspy at times, all in the blink of an eye, following hilly melodies ... an odd but enchanting mix.
The only singer whose voice ever reminded me of her is Emilie Simon on "The Big Machine" album.

THIS SONG IS ASTONISHING, LIKE THE BOOK "WUTHERING HEIGHTS" FROM EMILY BRONTE,AND THE 1939 MOVIE "WUTHERING HEIGHTS" WITH THE GREAT ENGLISH ACTOR LAURENCE OLIVIER,A BEAUTIFUL GOTHIC STORY ABOUT A LOVE BEYOND DEATH.

Like you said, she throws herself into the song, and the modulation-you said it- of her voice is always giving subtlety to her brilliant lyrics. Tori Amos, Bjork, and PJ Harvey, to only name a few, achieved greatness by following in her footsteps. Those performers influenced by Kate Bush were not mere imitators, they simply saw that her work represented a path forward in music that would never die.

It took 2 years of stubborn talks convincing record companies to release this as her first single they said it was not commercial enough at 19 she had her way it shocked the industry and paved the way for female artists the world over to do things there way in a male dominated world of manipulation of male and female musical artists, speaking as a man she was facinating and beautiful two guys i knew were infatuated with her
