  • "Every great and difficult thing has required a strong sense of optimism," says editor and author Kevin Kelly, who believes that we have a moral obligation to be optimistic. Tracing humanity's progress throughout history, he's observed that a positive outlook helps us solve problems and empowers us to forge a path forward. In this illuminating talk, he shares three reasons for optimism during challenging times, explaining how it can help us become better ancestors and create the world we want to see for ourselves and future generations.

This talk sounds good to me. I am an eternal optimist. There are blessings in every moment. There is good in every situation. The optimist could find it the pessimist can find the problems. I want more good situations so that is my focus and that is what I get. You get what you focus on. Speaking about what you don't want attracts it.

The video says that there is a reason why we should be optimistic about the future, and this may be a very difficult thing to do when we are facing extraordinary problems. I really agree with that statement, when we are faced with a very extraordinary problem we will feel pessimistic to solve the problem, especially for unusual people to face extraordinary problems. We can overcome this starting from our own intentions, because if we are sure of our efforts, then we will be able to solve them. Then we have to believe in ourselves, with confidence we will believe that we can do it without thinking about things that might not happen. Bad things will happen faster than good things, because good things take a long time to happen.

Logic and empiricism is the basis for this Ted Talk. There is another component that makes an optimistic future viable and real - "accountability." This is one quality sadly missing in our current culture. Our ancestors were forced to make generational sacrifices (think depression and world wars). Our current culture demands one's needs are paramount over the needs of the greater whole only to create true narcissist and a denigrating culture of rot. There is hope with awareness, personal accountability and... to give back more than we take.

@@starklife1 First, thank you for your comment. The answer to your first question is that we do not know how many philosophical problems have stopped the future from being shaped. I am in no way disparaging Elon Musk’s to build Robot Optimus. I am simply noting that Robot Optimus will not have true artificial intelligence. The philosophical problem that I cited surrounds a very common but completely mistaken belief that human beings are mere receivers of knowledge that we perceive in the environment provided by our sense organs. Human beings are universal explainers and constructors. Our minds are universal simulators. We are quite unlike robots. We create new knowledge “on the fly”. I believe that true AI is possible. However, a machine that thinks has not yet been built. As far as is known, we are the only animals that can create new knowledge. Building a true AI takes a better philosophical understanding of the nature of a human being.

Yeah I mostly meant it as a funny comment cause the name is close to optimism, however I didn't mean to say that it's agi. It's simply that solving computer vision and machine learning of real world environment is just on the horizon now so humanoid robots will be a part of the current industrial revolution and going forward will shape parts of our future. I absolutely agree that it is very concerning for us as humans. Technology is a double edged sword and I think in many ways it harms us more than it seems to help, but at this point we have to make the best of it.

Since then discoveries have declined. Globally the oil industry finds less than 10 billion barrels PA. Mankind consumes 36 billion barrels PA. Unsustainable!
If there's to be a future Mankind must manage with very little oil.

You can tell he's trying so hard but he's out of touch. He's not flat out wrong but he's seeing things through a fixed perspective and not about how literally we will always face some form of inequities because that's an unfortunate constant we need to fight rather than ignore. But, we're NEVER going to get to this "perfect place" because for everyone to be exactly the same and agree with eachother that would be quite literally be 1 person in a room alone. Even then there would be a problem! Even if you would love to be alone, and you'd be the minority here, you would still need someone in your life to serve some purpose. People still need doctors, people still need therapists, people still need assistance, people should not be expected to be specialists in everything so again, we have to all live together! But, because some people don't think food service is a respectable job even though it is a necessary one. Just because they're not holding your money doesn't mean that there any less important than a bank! They feed you! To be honest restaurants do more for Americans and Banks do! But that's the thing! When we rely on the concept of the good old days in order to look at the future we are completely dismissing the present that's going on. Right now, we are in some serious bad times. We obviously need optimism but at the same time things are not good right now! And we need to focus on that! We need that to actually drive us to band together to actually tackle the problems at hand so we can get back to being optimistic! But! Unless are some major changes in this country, and I am legitimately saying 180° turn changes. We are not making it.

It is is particularly important for people to understand that religions are a predominant source of pessimism. Anything that claims "perfection" or "ultimate truth" closes or destroys the ability to correct errors. Error correction always reveals new problems. Religions encourage the re-interpretation that problems will "never" be solved.

I'm irrevocably optimistic. But Kelly is way out of touch with the uniquely precarious position we humans face at this point in history. Climate change is of course our primary challenge, but the increasing number of hurdles in front of this primary challenge is growing insurmountable, starting with tech-driven polarization and the imminent redundancy of humans with AI. As the earth's sixth mass extinction is happening in ten minutes, we need democracy and consensus yesterday (or at least an authoritarian government that wants to save the human race). This guy seems to be enjoying his final morphine dose; his philosophy is wonderful but outdated and barely helpful now.

  • @lachlansleight

I agree with his message for idealogical reasons, but disagree with his actual argument, and don't think it would convince anyone who isn't already idealogically on-board. His core justification for optimism seems to be grounded in the assumption that 'things are always getting better and have been through all of history', but this is a very near-sighted and oversimplified read of the past.
Sure, by many, many metrics the human condition has been improving for the last few hundred years - but there are many periods of history where there are great backslides in standards of living, technological advancement and culture. Think of the bronze-age collapse, or the decline of the Roman Empire, or the age of colonialism in the colonised parts of the world. There is nothing inherently guaranteed about the continued short-term (next 50 years) improvement in the state of human civilisation. We could very well be entering a period of decades or centuries of decline, rendered an insignificant downward blip on the millenia-long upwards trend of civilisation five-hundred years from now - by those forgetting that the 'downwards blip' actually consumed the entire lifespans of billions of people.
This kind of oversimplified 'everything is always getting better' risks abidicating the responsibility we have as a species to recognize the real danger that our civilisation is in and to make immediate, radical change to avert that danger. I imagine that according to Kevin Kelly, the right course of action would be to just continue along as-normal without changing any of the entrenched economic and political systems which created the dangers we now face in the first place. To simply wait, hoping that everything sorts itself out thanks to some nebulous idea of 'progress'.

I suspect this well-done presentation was based on Mr. Kelly's familiarity with some of the writings. of Karl Popper. I believe that Popper is responsible for the best Philosophy of Science so far. His contributions to the field are not yet fully appreciated. in my opinion. Unfortunately, the 300 year old Philosophy of Empiricism is still accepted as "common sense." by many philosophers and even scientists. Empiricism resembles religions and is seriously flawed. On the other hand, Popper's Philosophy of Realism is based on the values of the Enlightenment that claim the reality of the world can be explained and that it is desirable to do so.
