  • Our day trip to Beechworth began bright and early with a long walk from The Cascades to Woolshed Falls. Around 9km return, the walk was beautiful and took us along the Spring Creek. The track was well defined and had signs explaining the gold rush history in the area.
When we arrived at Woolshed Falls we first went to the viewing platform and then walked down to the rocky area at the top of the falls to explore. We sat down for a quick morning tea before heading back to where we left our car at the Beechworth Cascades.
We then drove along The Gorge before heading back to the Powder Magazine to have a look at where all the explosives were kept back during the gold rush.
Back in Beechworth, we first stopped at the Visitor Information Centre where we picked up some brochures and got some local advice on things to do and see. Unfortunately the Beechworth Goal and the Beechworth Asylum were both closed due to Victorian restrictions, so we decided we would come back another day to do tours of them both.
First we walked around the Beechworth Historic Precinct, admiring the Courthouse, the old stone lockup etc. It was also a shame we couldn't walk inside the buildings.
Our lunch stop was at Beechworth Bakery of course and it did not disappoint. Do yourself a favour if you go there and get a Beesting!
We spent a while just walking through the historic streets admiring the historic buildings and shops. We went into the Bank of Victoria where you can actually walk into the original gold vault from 1861. Beechworth Honey is also worth a visit, offering a free audio-visual tour to learn about honey and the history of the local business.
Next up we headed out to Murmungee Lookout, only a short drive out of Beechworth. On a clear day you can see Mount Buffalo in the distance and offers a great view of the Victorian Alps.
Then we drove back through Beechworth and out to Mount Pilot, in the Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park in the Victorian High Country. We drove as far as we could up the mountain before beginning the summit walk. It was a short walk but offered beautiful views and was 100% worth it.
