- Rock'n'Roll legend Pat Benatar ("Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Invincible", "Love Is A Battlefield") sits down with Ernie to discuss life on the road, the first time she met her husband and collaborator Neil 'Spider' Giraldo, and the challenges she faces as a female performer in a genre of music dominated by men. Plus, find out why the making of one of the 1980's definitive music videos almost broke up her band! All episodes of InnerVIEWS with Ernie Manouse are available on DVD at houstonpbs.org.
Put Pat in the Hall of Fame Now!!! Long over Due. She's Damn Well earned it
Being an Alumni from Patricia’s high school and I was in the same chorus program as her she deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
You are sooooo lucky , she is my favorite female singer
Man, what a wonderful human being.
She's so full of energy and laid back at the same time. The way she calmly tells a story is so good to listen to.
I miss her type of artist nowadays.
Pat and Neil are just awesome. For those who may not know, check out their blues album True Love! Some real good gems on that album. Pat's not just a rocker!
The best voice in rock and roll no doubt
Interviewer did a very good job; no interrupting
She still looks beautiful and sings great! She really hasn't changed a bit to me. Its great to see her still happily married when so many other marriages fail.
I too have followed Pat since 1979. An African American growing up in South she became my saving grace! lol I just purchased her book this past weekend and read it in a day! Love love love this woman!
We love you Pat!!! Your inspiration lives on forever in our hearts
It's a sin this woman isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame. Let me rephrase: It's a sin this COUPLE isn't in the R&R HoF.
Very true. Both are more than deserving.
Well you know the comment on the statement we all can vote both Pat Benatar and spider in the Hall of Fame I would think that we have a chance as fans to request that they do become part of rock and roll Hall of Fame inductees we just got to get around to getting together and voting them in I know I'm casting my vote as a yes that they do become part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ASAP okay be well y'all😊
2022 Done. ✅✊🏻
This showed how endearing Pat Benatar is. She is such a sweetheart. I love her even more after this video.
She is truly a talented singer. Listen to her, then listen to some of those whose names I won't mention, and there is a undeniable difference in the quality of the voice.
GREAT! great interview, i agree one of the best interviews i have seen Pat do.
Makes a difference when the interviewer actually let's her speak and not put words in her mouth.
God bless youtube, it would of taken about 5 years for this to show it's face here in the UK!
Ernie, I don't usually comment on interviewers (unless they're so atrocious, I'm compelled to verify they're aware of this point!), and in addition, I've only recently learned how truly difficult it is to do/be a great interviewer. Having said that, I want to sincerely thank you for probably the most enjoyable interview of Pat I've ever seen (and brother, I've seen them ALL!). Its clear your a true fan of the Geraldos from the carefully selected questions (God, your original list of questions must have been hours long!) that showed just the right amount of 'true fan' knowledge to prove you are a legitimate, long time fan, but also showed her the utmost respect by carefully and professionally reigning your enthusiasm in and most important of all this: you let the subject SPEAK. You didn't 'help' the interviewee with constant "uh huh's" and finish paused words, or interrupt and mess up Pats flow (I know you understand what I mean). I'm impressed, and thouroughly enjoyed this interview with Pat. Bravo my friend, thank you for being so professional, and enjoying it so much too!
Giraldo not Geraldo
What a great interview!
Thanks for this! ❤️👍
I love her! She's so awesome and down to earth! What a sweetheart!
Very enjoyable. Saw her late 90’s wonderful team.
love her - great interview!!!
Thanks you for the interview to document such a wonderful performer and lady.
She's straight forward, no nonsense, down to earth and one of the most amazing vocalists in rock history. I read her autobiography 'Between a Heart and a Rock Place' which gives incredible insight into her career and her as a person. I highly recommend that to any Benatar fan.
What a great interview! Thanks for posting.
one of the best interviews I've seen!
thanks for sharing it with NJ!
Pat benatar YOU ROCK MY LADY!!
Pat is so beautiful in so many ways!!!!
I remember listening to Pat Benetar's album over and over, playing the guitar to her songs and wishing I was her guitarist, now after all these years I realize I was really wishing I played like Neil Giraldo... I saw them recently together and they are still making magic, the encore that evening was both of them coming out on stools and Neil playing acoustically while they joked around with the crowd and sang until the end of the performance, their careers seem to be one of those extremely rare Hollywood happily ever after, off into the sunset things ~
Right you are.... we shot this interview in the office suite for the Arena Theatre just an hour or two before she took the stage! Thanks for watching!
I’m a huge fan of Pat B. (first 3 albums deserve most attention), but it wasn’t only Janice Joplin who played this type of music genre before her time. In actuality, it was ANN WILSON’s powerhouse voice (from the rock band Heart) that SHOOK the rock stage in mid 1970’s with mega hits like: Crazy On You; Kick It Out; Straight On; Even It Up; Magic Man & Barracuda, etc.
I often think who else can you say their first three albums were all GREAT. Saw her in '80 and '81.
They came out at the same time. Heart from the west coast, Pat Benatar from the east coast.
@@illbarry Thanks! I was going to say the same thing that they came out at the same time. I think there was a convergence of great female rockers.. and the one to eclipse them all was a returnee to the arena.. Tina Turner.. :)
She has an amazingly strong, pure voice. So glad she didn't go on the path to an opera singer like her mother wanted her to
Very cool. She must have done this interview right before our Houston show.
Pat’s voice is undoubtedly unique, but much of the credit is attributed to the very talented but extremely humble musician and producer Neil Giraldo. My 🎩 goes down to Him because Neil is the ONE behind the music & Pat wrote the lyrics.
Not without her he wouldn't be where he is now , PAT BENATAR is who everyone is who most want , not that Neil is bad in any way at all but it is PAT BENATAR who is the main attraction
behind every successful woman there is a great man
chrisiden Behind any successful person is a great base of succeeding people in a succeeding system.
It isn't a competition or some male/female thing. They are a TEAM. And THAT is the secret of their success. She struck gold with him and he with her.. :).
Thanks for Sharing..✨✨👋🏻
Great interview !
BABY BABY,you got it all PATTY
I think it was 78 or 79, Pat Benetar opened for the Phillie's game in Philadelphia. I didn't see it, but my HS friend said there was hardly anyone in the bleachers and for those who were lucky enough to see her, they were blown away. Her big first song "Heartbreaker" hit the charts.
BENATAR not Benetar
Another talented Long Islander
+j flo She was Born &Raised in Greenpoint Brooklyn. And is of Polish Parents.?
+MyREDTAIL No she graduated from Lindenhurst High School. A co worker went to high school with her. Lindenhurst is on Long Island. I was born in Brooklyn too & raised on LI. Its very common here. She graduated high school in 1971. Not too long ago I saw her at NYCB theater on Long Island & the audience had many, many people from Lindenhurst and she mentioned she was from Lindenhurst & shared memories.
Madonna pregnant
What !!!!!!
NYC girl Lindenhurst born and raised in the same neighborhood were Patricia lived and went to the same high school as her
She must have just finished the interview right before I saw her back stage. Nice job!

your right, that song is so good, but she has lots of album cuts that I'll listen to before heartbreaker.
Awesome
Best Rock singers- man and woman: Rod Stewart and Pat.
MICHAEL SWEET OF STRYPER BEST MALE SINGER !!!!
SWEET!!!!!!LOVE THAT HAVE BEEN MARRIED ALL THIS TIME..........With all their success....just another notch in the lipstick case.
HA good one
when will the dvd be for sale? I want the bonus NEIL!!! GIRALDO interview!
What a neat, sweet lady she is. Thanks for this.
She's how old again? Looks like a million damn dollars. What a cool chick. What a great way to handle fame and its aftermath. Lady's a class act.
Another great interview, Ernie.
she would now be 63.
she talks about singing "heart breaker" forever, I have all of her albums but never play that song. She has a library of songs a lot better, I guess it was over played on the radio at the time. Pat was my first love, the Queen of rock and roll...
she comes across as a cool Mom with an alter-ego...
SOME OF THESE COMMENTS ARE SO HORRIBLE. THIS IS WHY I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMMENT ON VIDEOS. HOW ANYONE COULD SPEAK NEGATIVE OF PAT BENATAR IS BEYOND ME. GOD THERE ARE ALLOT OF LOSERS ON RUclips.
BENATAR=GODDESS.
She was pretty smart about her career -she gave herself three or four years and then she wanted to settle down with her husband happily ever after which is what she did. She probably walked away with $7 million
whoa
The secret, dont drink or smoke, look 20 at 57.
I LOVE AND RESPECT PAT AS A STRONG SLAVIC WOMAN. MY MOM WAS MERAUVIAN SLAVIC. 💜
Did she say 57??????
61 now!
Dicky guy
Racheal Zoe looks like her are they related? Look at the mannerisms etc yeah see they must be related both very attractive.
Stevie Nicks,The Runaways did all that before her and she never mentions her...Also she never wanted to be the main person of the band yet she named the band after her name (?).Led Zeppelin wasnt called "Jimmy Page".
Stevie Nicks never fronted like her, the only singer. No comparison. The Runaways? What they do compared to her?
You sound a bit triggered or irritated....She signed the contract as a solo artist and the Neil came into the picture about 6 months after. Pat wanted the label to change the debut and all future albums to "Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo". They refused because she had already signed as a solo artist.
Stevie was in a band, Pat fronted a band...
Fleetwood Mac was never hard rock! And regardless if the Runaways when an all girl group, they sucked!
Great interview!
