  • The biology of leaf-footed bugs is explained in this video and whether or not you need to worry about them in your home. Like other hemipterans (assasin or wheel bugs, bed bugs, and stink bugs) compared in this video, Leaf-footed Bugs (family: Coreidae) have a proboscis or stabbing, sucking mouth parts. Leaf-footed Bugs are easily identified by their wide leg bases that are said to look like a leaf.

Hi Frank. From Pennsylvania buddy /student Jeff. This was an awsome video. Your still teaching. ME. today we were high mowing our grassland that we planted last year. Alot of the native weeds and wildflowers are growing very well. BUT Japanese thistle was trying to move into the area. Our biologist recommended high mowing. To keep the thisle from seeding. Now the good part. I got to see a brand new little whitetail fawn. And mamma was watching. I moved him out of harms way. And next round mamma was there and he was getting a meal. God is good and I work in his handiwork. . Your buddy Jeff.

When we lived in Germany one autumn our uppermost room was invaded by ladybugs. The glued themselves to the tall, slanted ceiling. Other than a slight smell when I got close to them on a ladder they were no problem. We moved back to the States during the winter so I’ve no idea what came of them. As a rule I use a feather duster to coax insects in the house away from the windows toward a door if I can’t trap them with a glass instead. Although while in New Mexico I caught a large red and black wasp with a plastic dish and sheet of paper and let it go. It didn’t act very aggressive so I thought it was just a good deed done. Later I found out that it was a tarantula wasp that has a very painful sting. Luckily most insects are benign and easily moved outdoors. I’m so glad you are acquainting us with these otherworldly, alien-looking, earth species.

One year our home was inundated by lady bugs. They may have been initially attracted to a sunny, white stucco wall. They found a way inside and overwintered on the tall wood ceiling of one room. They distinctly smelled so I tried to catch them release outside before it got too cold. But they were glued fast to the ceiling.
We also lived for a time in New Mexico where there were big black and red wasps. They were large, bumbling, and cumbersome so I didn’t take them seriously. One got into our office at work and I caught it with a plastic bowl and piece of paper and released it, as one would do with a bee or moth. Afterwards my coworker told me what I’d caught. I was so thankful that I’d not been stung as it was some sort of a tarantula wasp.

I love discovering these little ones in our house. I am always concerned though if our house is warm they won't hibernate and die? Are they able to still hibernate with out feeling cool? I worry they are going to think its summer and roam the house looking for food?

I think insects that over winter need low temp to reduce metabolism so they don't use up energy reserves and starve by spring....also indoor environment is so dry they will desicate !

Actually, I’ve got a similar observation. As a ten-year old at an Oregon camping site I saw huge lady bugs. It was like an episode of the twilight zone.; very disquieting. There was water running from a hillside spring that was supporting lush plant life. Some of it was heavily coated with aphids and these lady bugs were calmly munching away on them. They weren’t roundish lady bugs grown huge, but more of a bigger pear-shaped lady bug.
