MALE or FEMALE TURTLE? (How to Know)

  • With more than 330 turtle species on planet earth, there is extreme variation when it comes to size, markings, color, habits and of course gender differentiation. Some species are blatantly sexually dimorphic meaning it's very easy to see who is the male and who is the female. In other cases, it's extremely difficult. In this video we start with the basics by taking a look at one tortoise species and one turtle species to find out how to separate male from female. Although there are exceptions with some species, especially obscure ones, the details in this video are easy to understand and will allow you to leave feeling more confident on the subject.

@@GardenStateTortoise awesome! Thanks man! I know that you keep other herps, but do you by chance keep anything in the genus Opheodrys? Green snakes, in other words. They are my absolute favorite snakes species and I was among the first to get them to breed and thrive in captivity. I worked with that species for years until I stepped away from herpetology.

Hi I’m new to your channel but have binge watched loads of your videos already & have to say they are brilliant, thank you so much.
I have a Horsefield’s Tortoise called Pip! He’s (I say he but I’ve no idea!) about 3 years old. I’d love it if you could do a video like this one for the Horsefield’s (Russian) Tortoise as I remember in one of your other videos you said that their plastron did not concave in males.
Pip was extremely small when we got him,far smaller than the others the same age but is growing nice & steady. Just wanted to know how big he/she is supposed to be at 3yo & what age they tend to stop growing.
Thank you again for your videos, they are the most helpful I’ve found yet. There are so many voices when I search online so it’s awesome to find someone who is so knowledgeable & obviously cares dearly for these beautiful animals. Great job

Hi I live in South Jersey also. I need help! I found a tiny little fella Señor Pablo. I believe he is a map turtle. Im confused about what to do for him in regards to making him a comfortable home (tank). I have had him 2 weeks now. I have been changing his enviroment constantly after watching videos. What Im confused about is some videos show an all water tank some show water with a lot of land. I notice he likes to swim but rather send more time in the sand. But because of the vidoes I have given him more water but he still has a basking spot and shallow area. I recently added a heater, a bashing lamp (not the uvb) and Im adding a filter. I dont think he has eaten any of the meal worms and I just got him tiny turtle pellets. He does like to hide ofter. He was hiding in the sand until I added the water. Now he hides in a plant I bought. He was very active the first couple of days... Everyday I come in from work I wake him out making sure he is okay. Then he plays for a while. Then he is back to hiding and sleeping. He is a funny little fella like Otis. He peeks his head out looking for me and responds to my voice when I talk to him. What should I do about his tank, and am I wrong for waking him all the time? I want to take great care of him and the information is all over the place and I dont know what to do. Thank you. I have been a Subscriber for a couple of months... I love Otis👍

Do females also have rounder, less textured shells? I noticed that on the first tortoises, the male had a very spiky shell while the female had a smoother one. Is this because of mating, so it's easy for the male to mount?

I second that on the aquatic turtles because my son had some yellow bellied aquatic turtles and he named them Bonnie and Clyde but they never had eggs and no mating was ever attempted. So I am thinking they must have been the same sex. If the bottom is an indication then both female because neither of them had a concave belly.
