@@GardenStateTortoise awesome! Thanks man! I know that you keep other herps, but do you by chance keep anything in the genus Opheodrys? Green snakes, in other words. They are my absolute favorite snakes species and I was among the first to get them to breed and thrive in captivity. I worked with that species for years until I stepped away from herpetology.
I’m so glad I found your channel. This is all so fascinating to me. Turtles and tortoises are just so quiet and mellow and mostly left on the side. There’s so much to learn about them!
Living works of art IMO. And a pace that allows leisurely appreciation! The artworks are very aware of their own genders...🤗😂❤️ This ts such a happy, instructive channel!!!
Like Barbara Barnett said, “Living works of art”. These turtles and tortoises literally take my breath away with how beautiful they are. Thank you for sharing them with us. I would like to know how to differentiate between male and female of any you would care to show us. Turtles and tortoises are fascinating 💛💛💛💛
Hi I’m new to your channel but have binge watched loads of your videos already & have to say they are brilliant, thank you so much. I have a Horsefield’s Tortoise called Pip! He’s (I say he but I’ve no idea!) about 3 years old. I’d love it if you could do a video like this one for the Horsefield’s (Russian) Tortoise as I remember in one of your other videos you said that their plastron did not concave in males. Pip was extremely small when we got him,far smaller than the others the same age but is growing nice & steady. Just wanted to know how big he/she is supposed to be at 3yo & what age they tend to stop growing. Thank you again for your videos, they are the most helpful I’ve found yet. There are so many voices when I search online so it’s awesome to find someone who is so knowledgeable & obviously cares dearly for these beautiful animals. Great job
We have a sulcata tortoise Winston. We've had him for about 3 years. He's got a huge tank to roam. He's almost double in size. Growing beautifully.Such a character, I tell everyone what an easy cool pet he is. Found out today we believe he's a male. Thank you.
THANK YOU!! I REALLY ENJOYED that!! I LOVE TURTLES! ❤🐢❤ I've got quite a few that live on the property w me! I've had to save a few from wandering dogs but always place them safely in the direction they were going! Now I'll hopefully be able to tell their genders! ❤️🐢🐢❤️
For an average person..if you didn't have a male and female side by side it would not be easy to tell! Love how much you learn from your videos! Thank you😇❤️
What beautiful tortoises you have We must definitely protect them from being extinct please make more videos and please protect those nice beautiful tortoises you have and over reptiles and animals too I love your video
So interesting. So males don’t get their concave plastrons till later? It must happen very slowly then. I just love your videos and the turtle I’d love to see covered as far as sexual dimorphism is the Mata Mata. I’ve never seen a video on that. Thanks!🐢❤️🐢
Hi I live in South Jersey also. I need help! I found a tiny little fella Señor Pablo. I believe he is a map turtle. Im confused about what to do for him in regards to making him a comfortable home (tank). I have had him 2 weeks now. I have been changing his enviroment constantly after watching videos. What Im confused about is some videos show an all water tank some show water with a lot of land. I notice he likes to swim but rather send more time in the sand. But because of the vidoes I have given him more water but he still has a basking spot and shallow area. I recently added a heater, a bashing lamp (not the uvb) and Im adding a filter. I dont think he has eaten any of the meal worms and I just got him tiny turtle pellets. He does like to hide ofter. He was hiding in the sand until I added the water. Now he hides in a plant I bought. He was very active the first couple of days... Everyday I come in from work I wake him out making sure he is okay. Then he plays for a while. Then he is back to hiding and sleeping. He is a funny little fella like Otis. He peeks his head out looking for me and responds to my voice when I talk to him. What should I do about his tank, and am I wrong for waking him all the time? I want to take great care of him and the information is all over the place and I dont know what to do. Thank you. I have been a Subscriber for a couple of months... I love Otis👍
Very informative video! I would like to know more about how you guys deal with some diseases that occur during turtle keeping. I personally keep an eastern box turtle but it recently refuse to eat and the pits under its rear leg puff like a balloon. Do you have any ideas about that? Thank you so much.
Do females also have rounder, less textured shells? I noticed that on the first tortoises, the male had a very spiky shell while the female had a smoother one. Is this because of mating, so it's easy for the male to mount?
I love ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ all turtles ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ there beautiful and cute ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ sooo right 👍▶️ thnxs for sharing the video I'll be your friend's ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Can you make a video about the difference between turtles and terrapins bc I think you made one for turtles and tortoises but I'm kinda confused abt turtles and terrapins.
I’ve been caring for turtles for 8 years, and this video was VERY educational! I’d very much like to see you tell the gender apart from a three toed box turtle. Funny enough, my Veterinarian sexed my Ernie as female…..he is very much a boy (I’ve seen him show off in his water dish). 😅
@@GardenStateTortoise I see, I was wondering if I could put an oil on my Greek tortoise shell for an added protection but I won't just for aesthetics, she's beautiful regardless
I second that on the aquatic turtles because my son had some yellow bellied aquatic turtles and he named them Bonnie and Clyde but they never had eggs and no mating was ever attempted. So I am thinking they must have been the same sex. If the bottom is an indication then both female because neither of them had a concave belly.
Haha of course not. Unfortunately we have to sometimes use ridiculous titles to get people to watch. I hate it but if we can’t get the views, we can’t keep going. Thank you for watching!
It was a quite interesting video. However, I have a marginated tortoise, which about I cannot decide if s/he is a male or female. Could you make a video about marginated tortoises in this topic? Thanks: Peter

Surely. I’ll include some specifics in another one. I have some data on animals that showed they were one sex until 10+ years of age and the boom, it turned out they were the opposite sex.
@@GardenStateTortoise Thank you so much. For instance, I had 10 inch tortoise that I thought was female for sure (short tail), but the other day it flashed. Take the turtle to a bloody vet instead of commenting on a youtube video.
We don’t deal much with it thankfully, and luckily we have professional zoo veterinarians when we do. My advice would be to get it to a good vet asap.
Magnificent tortoises.

Hi Elizabeth. I’m not sure about blood tests I can ask our vets.

Is there actually a “courtship” before the coitus? Or is it like a drive thru deposit?? Real question……..
Yep, there is courtship which varies per species.
