Raag Megh Malhar is a pleasingly sweet melody which resembles Raag Madhumad-Sarang in its basic framework. In Raag Madhumad-Sarang, Sarang Ang is prominent for example: S R m R ; m P n P m R here Rishabh is a Vadi Swar and is rendered straight from Madhyam without any Meend, just like in Raag Vrindavani Sarang. Whereas in Raag Megh Malhar, Rishabh is always rendered by touching Madhyam as a Kan-Swar. Vadi Swar of Raag Megh Malhar is Shadj (Sa). Similarly, in Raag Madhumad-Sarang, n P is rendered straight, whereas in Raag Megh Malhar, n P is rendered in Malhar Ang as (P)n P.
This Raag can be mastered only after learning it from Guru mukh. Being a very old Raag, Megh Malhar is rendered with the influence of Dhruvpad Ang which uses a lot of Gamak and Meend. This Raag can be freely elaborated in all the three octaves and creates a rather deep atmosphere. The Rishabh-Pancham Sangati with stress on Malhar form as given below will clearly bring out the Raag form:

@Snatani Shatriya what? no... maybe with better sur and laykari, but as far as tayari is concerned only a handful are on his level are there like Rashid Khan, Naseer Ahmed Khan, Amir Khan (very early), Bhimsen Joshi (50s and 60s), Jayateerth Mevundi etc.
Other than these guys he has no equal.

I totally agree. I am also very lucky to have heard him multiple times in around 1976! We arranged a program in Salford University, and there were also other programs I attended. He wad with his son Sharafat Ali, and Ghulam Abbas was on Tabla. I greatly cherish that experience.

One of the most enjoyable things about this music, is that it transverses cultures and religion. You just feel the colors of the music, and the emotion. Though only 5 notes, the music carries deep feelings.
I have to disagree. This sublime music is so profoundly redolent of its own cultural world that appreciating it needs an element of cultural understanding that is not readily available through some process of "globalised" values. Salamat sahib is such an utter gem (and I use the present tense knowingly, because he lives on), but a true sensibility to his music is only attained through certain संस्कार, and is not available in the supermarket of "world music".

Medition करने के लिए एक मुकम्बल जरिया है आपको सुनने का. न जाने कितने लोग आपको सुनते समय जन्नत महसूस करते होंगे. वो सूर वो नूर, हशद भी शर्माता होगा. खुदा खुद पूछता होगा इसे किसने बनाया होगा ? खुदा की बंदगी इससे और उँची क्या होगी ? हम तो स्वर/सूर की बारीशमें भिगकर धन्य हो गए. आपकी रुह सदा यूँ ही महकती रहे.
