  • A pretty rare vintage lens from Japan. I read some positive reviews/comments about this lens, so I was excited to try it. Unfortunately it didn't turn out to be that good. Maybe this lens is great when shooting film or on old (low resolution) digital camera, because on a modern full-frame Sony A7iii it disappoints. For a comparison I also took some pictures with the Pentax-M 135mm f3.5 and well... see for yourself how both lenses perform.

I don't know much about pictures, but there are different parts compared to each other. There are pros and cons. Thank you for the video.

I remember when Komura lenses were still quite common on the second hand shelf in camera shops - I've never tried one, but I would assume they can be ok if some people like them. It's entirely possible that your copy has a dodgy or incorrectly assembled element somewhere - surely they can't all be that bad, your copy is terrible compared to your Pentax!!! My worst lens is my Makinon 28-80 which is pretty terrible, but someone told me that they have a copy that is far better than their comparable Canon lens, so maybe some of these manufacturers hadn't nailed quality control at that time. I won't be rushing out to buy a Komura lens after seeing your video.

Maybe it has dodgy or incorrectly assembled element indeed, because I started doubting my own focusing abilities.
But even if it was sharper I still wouldn't like this lens. The focus ring is very stiff and overall it just doesn't feel nice.

@@ohjajohh Yeah, that's the case with my Ricoh 50mm f2 (like the one you tried), even if it was the sharpest and best optical lens ever, it would be difficult to fall in love with it because it feels so horrible.

I read great things about Komura lenses too. It is a shame that it did not preform well. Komura is a bit of a weird brand with their unusually fast lenses for their time (the 135mm f/2.0 and 100mm f/1.8 for instance). It seems like your example aged like milk rather than like wine.
On a similar note, what are your experiences with these so called bokeh beast, numerous aperture blade 135mm lenses? It seems that you were disappointed with both this Komura and the Pentacon.

Yeah it's a shame this lens didn't perform as good as I hoped. But this 135/3.5 wasn't their top model, the faster lenses that you mentioned might be a lot better than this budget Komura.
You're right, so far I'm not impressed with 'bokeh-beasts' indeed. I also have the 13-bladed Silver Helios, and I don't think it performs much better than a regular Helios 44. But I do appreciate the craftsmanship of a nicely build lens with 13 or 16 blades.
