- Namibia celebrated Constitution Day on February 9.
The primary purpose of United Nations Resolution 435 was to hold free and fair elections to elect the Constituent Assembly that would draft the constitution of independent Namibia.
The first meeting of the Constituent Assembly took place on November 21, 1989, at Tintinpalast, which is now the seat of parliament in Windhoek. The leader of the majority party, Dr. Sam Nujoma, chaired this meeting. The first order of business was the election of the chairman of the Constituent Assembly. There were two nominations: Hage Geingob of SWAPO and Andrew Matjila of DTA. After voting, Hage Geingob was elected chairman.
Ricardo |Goagoseb spoke to one of the members of the Constituent Assembly, Pendukeni Ivula-Ithana.
