They had all their hopes resting on Starfield, and when that went kinda sideways, they didn't really havea team ready to work on Fallout. So, when the Prime Video Show was coming up they just sort of rushed a quick fix out there and what we currently see is the "dog food" release.

Having an entire graphical mode that doesn't work on the series x version, but does work on the ps5 version, is absolutely inexcusable, though. How does that even happen?

What happened to Bethesda? Their game quality has dropped considerably, they refuse to redo their engine from the ground up (which it desperately needs), and now they can't even get an update right, especially on the hardware of the company that owns them. Not to mention that they completely fucked over their modders who have put in so much work to improve the games and keep them alive for years longer than normal.
Another issue with Fallout 4 on PC is the tendency for the launcher on some PC's to not list any kind of resolution that isn't 1080p. If your monitor's resolution is 4K or 1440p, sometimes the option for you to play the game at those resolutions in full screen mode won't show up, at which point you'll have to play in windowed mode, which creates a smaller window for the game that only takes up roughly 75% of your display (which you can't re-size). As of me posting this comment, this isn't fixable by changing the resolution in the game's config files. The game was forcing me to play at some weird resolution of a ratio not 16:9, which made everything look distorted and blurry. How in the world is something like this even an issue? I have never encountered something like this in all my years of playing games on PC. This isn't even something I remember dealing with on PC in the mid-2000s (other than maybe Oblivion lol). It boggles my mind that Bethesda Game Studios is a multi-billion dollar company rather than a tiny studio run by a handful of people. These kinds of little issues should not exist on games made by a company of this size. Also, the Xbox version having a quality mode that simply doesn't work is so rich. How Microsoft can mismanage things to even let that happen, I don't know. Bethesda has a well earned reputation at this point for really technically insufficient work and it seems like they just don't care and take steps at every turn to reinforce that reputation. I'm glad Baldur's Gate 3 stole Starfield's thunder because Bethesda needs to be humbled. Their workmanship is piss poor compared to other studios in the industry.
Why didn't they improve the shadow draw distance in Fallout 4 on console? It's very low. People whine about resolutions these days, but this is a visual setting that actually matters.
For real! I'd rather play a 1080p with as many ultra settings the game allows in HDR than a bare bones 2160p game with crap shadows and lightning with no HDR
93 Doom is THE Doom, imo. I recently started making maps again cause it's a great creative outlet. The reboots are fine but the whole locked arena gunfights gameplay never sat well with me. And then Eternal feels like a wild fever dream. Too many things going on, too many mechanics to remember. The simplicity of '93 is pure magic.
It's a matter of preference really. I prefer doom 93 for it's simplicity but I do get bored of the constant brown/gray/red maps in these games. Stuff like Duke nukem 3d or shadow warrior 97 was always my kinda vibe.
OG Doom all the way, and I don't even mean to denigrate Doom 2016 which I really really like, having beaten it twice. OG Doom is just so seminal and remains so fresh and visceral despite the years.
What did Intel expect when they thought "Oh yeah 300 Watts at insane Voltages are okay..." Intel is desperate to keep some sort of significance, so they need to use twice as much power to keep up with AMD and then put the blame in MB manufactures for implementing their "intentionally not intentionally worded technical documentation". Thats what you get for slackig off for 8 years.
Bethesda just spent two years hyping this Fallout update and they give us this shit?!?! This looks like 3 interns worked on this update for 2 months over the summer. Did nobody at Bethesda check this update out before releasing it? How did they not look at the state of the modding scene and make this update improve the modding situation while not destroying everything the community built? Bethesda on their own is destroying all of the good will they have built and destroying their reputation. At this point I am no longer excited for any future projects they have coming down the line.
13:10 Not to mention the fact that, in the weeks leading up to this update, you couldn't play the PS4 version on PS5 through back-compat without it crashing (depending on what DLC you had installed). Really sloppy stuff
reduction in console upgrading is just a fact in a world where people are being laid off, cost of living is rising, and a lot of jobs are paying way below a living rate.. People make due with what they have. If you want average people to be consumers, and you want to keep infinitely growing, you have to give people the money to spend.
Got a spreadsheet to do simple math about the 40->120->60 frame interpolation: - Usual 40->60: 1/3 frames arrive at time, 1/3 of the frames are duplicated of the frames that arrived on time, 1/3 of the frames arrived late, causing terrible frame pacing. - Bonkers 40->120->60 interpolation: 1/3 of the frames are "real" frames, 2/3 of the frames are interpolated, all with (ideally) perfect frame pacing. So the idea is basically using motion vectors to fix bad frame pacing, if latency isn't crazy, I think it is a pretty good idea.
Rich’s momentary grimace upon hearing Tom confirm the broken FO4 Series X quality mode perfectly sums up how this generation has gone for team green. It feels like every other week we’re getting a new “PS5 inexplicably runs this game better” headline that just further cements Microsoft’s hardware woes.
If yall see it - Fallout on PS5 4K30 and 4K40 both work based on 120hz mode being on / off. 4K60 runs in 60hz mode. 1440p forced resolution keeps the game at 60fps, but quality mode with 120hz on does run the screen in 120hz mode, while performance keeps it in 60hz mode. Kind of odd. Both 60fps output it looks like.
Gotta love just how stupid the next gen update has been so far at least for the PC Bethesda releasing a broken update is such a Bethesda thing to do and even with all that delay they have done they never properly tested it.
I played FO4 maybe a year or two ago on PC, maybe I had a mod that adjusted this or ENB had some benefit, but the shadow draw distance seems abysmal in any of these modes on any console. It stands out so much with the sheer volume of dead trees littering the landscape. It's so jarringly bright. If it were my choice, I'd take a small hit to every other visual setting to push the shadows out further.
The whole intro section to this video shows total naivete about how Bethesda operates. They come to it like "how did they miss this in testing?" - it's because Bethesda doesn't do testing. I mean that anyone who expected this patch not to utterly break things hasn't paid any attention to Bethesda's track record for the past 20 years.
I just don’t understand why, especially in 2024, consoles don’t have the same sliders and toggles that PC has. If they are worried about “casuals” ruining the experience, just put a disclaimer on the graphics settings saying that “changing these options may severely impact performance and graphic fidelity, change at your own risk” and let console players change their settings to tailor to what they prefer. Having two preset settings is rather dumb considering new consoles are basically PCs in a box.
I don't see much reason why consoles can't do what the Steam Deck does, have a pre-defined setup for casual gamers, which would more or less be as it is now, whiles offering more advanced gamers more flexibility in how they play games like PC's offer, after all, consoles for the most part are basically PC's and a big selling point of the PC is that it allows me to play games how I want, there's not much reason why gamers on consoles couldn't have more flexibility in how they can play games, within the limited hardware of course. To be fair, console games have been offering more options to gamers over the last 2 console gens, but it does make me wonder, why not go all in and let gamers play how they want, it won't impact casual gamers that want to pick up and run as they will have a pre-defined set-up.
There is actually one huge factor : QA testing and ensuring a consistent experience across all users. Consoles are meant to be closed and dedicated eco system, where devs can finely tune their game to meet desired targets (be it visual quality or performance or a mix of both). Having access to individual settings just goes against the philosophy of console. You want in depth settings ? Go ahead and buy a PC.
Lords of the Fallen is great in terms of level design and exploration. Its graphics, despite the performance issues when it came out, is heaps and bounds above another acclaimed Souls like which came out around the same time, being Lies of P. As a game I enjoyed LotF much much more than Lies of P which was more like a linear boss rush.
I absolutely thought there was something wrong when I fired it up. I thought to myself, this does not look like it has been upgraded at all. I’m glad you guys found it and can get that note to Bethesda. Thank you for that.
Oh wow, team Avatar listened and provided a 40fps mode!? I will have to buy on principle alone. 40fps should absolutely be the standard this gen. 60fps is often too demanding and the lack of clarity ends up effecting titles to look last gen because you can no longer see and appreciate the details from the lack of resolution.
60fps still looks great on that game, though. I've already finished it, but I went back and tried the 40fps mode on PS5 and really don't see any benefits there.
@@SCBodyboarder83 Once 30 fps takes over the latter half of the console generation again, you will soon appreciate the benefits. Or rather becomes your only higher framerate option for demanding titles.
@Deliveredmean42 it's really on the studio. Plenty of demanding games can get the resolution and FPS right. I'm not asking for perfect native 4K but 1440 60fps should be the absolute baseline. It annoys me that more games aren't making use of VRR 120hz capable TVs as well.

With all due respect to Alex, it's not just the motherboard manufacturers that are responsible. Intel, losing market share, in multiple markets even, is pushing hard for the crown. They are not just looking the other way as motherboard makers code factory OC to compete with each other. This is very much Intel driving the behavior to compete with AMD, as it always has been, least we have a repeat of the dreaded Athlon XP era. I mean how dare another company have double digit market share in this monopoly.

I played the PS5 version and I noticed a huge amount of draw distance issues, I loaded up my save from my PS4 version and walked towards Sanctuary from Red Rocket And it was drawing everything in but that was performance mode I think I only played it for 4hrs but I did see a lot of draw distance issues I even tested the HD textures on PC because my RX580 couldn't use it. But my RX6600 can and I honestly to god notice no difference in textures at all I'm shocked a Bethesda game running better on Playstation than Xbox, those who played Fallout 3 on PS3 will know what I am on about, especially the GOTY edition I don't think they fixed anything at all really
@@TheGlowingOnee I had to save every 15 mins when playing any of the DLC because it would crash the console. In the end I had to use my watch timer to let me know when to save and after it would crash every time, because they never fixed the 10mb save file big
Before games like Doom or Wolfenstein 3D, the PC wasn’t even seen as a gaming machine. Not anything too serious. People usually played on a console, or on computers with dedicated graphics and sound processing chips like the Commodore machines, or the Atari St and such. The IBM PC and compats weren’t even really considered for action games. Doom solidified PCs into the action gaming-space, and did it in a way to take advantage of the one thing PCs had over the other systems. CPU power and the PCs use of chunky pixels over planar. It reversed the advantage, due to how the graphics were rendered at the time. It also was one of the earliest examples, of some sort of clock-based speed where many games before it didn’t and could run too fast the moment they were put on a faster machine.
I love the new 40fps patches that we're getting this gen. It really is a best of both worlds. It has the image quality of quality mode with ALMOST the same fluidity of performance modes. Even for a small 10fps bumps it feels MUCH smoother.
I couldn't care less if a game like Paper Mario runs at 30 fps in its remake, not like it absolutely _needed_ 60 in the first place anyway... Now if Nintendo had brought back F-Zero GX as a remake and prioritized 30 fps, I'm sure all hell would break loose, and for good reason. That is not a game that should ever compromise framerate. Metroid Prime Remastered understood that assignment. Unfortunately for everyone, F-Zero 99 was the best that we got.

To use 40 fps you need a 120 hz display and since not everyone has one of those most developers probably don’t think it’s worth the time to make a 40 fps mode.
@@treesnip5667Yes, but people who has bought new screens in the recent years probably got a 120hz one
@@RiseWegI’d wager even most new tv purchases are 60. 120hz TVs are usually much more expensive.
@@RiseWegPC gamers with a GPU strong enough for 120fps and who know about 120hz screens buy 120hz screens. That is absolutely not the majority of consumers
@@RiseWeg I'm cheap and poor and even I bought a 120hz one about three years ago.
I think what happened with Bethesda and the Fallout 4 "Patch" is, that they didn't really plan on making it. They had all their hopes resting on Starfield, and when that went kinda sideways, they didn't really havea team ready to work on Fallout. So, when the Prime Video Show was coming up they just sort of rushed a quick fix out there and what we currently see is the "dog food" release.
They did plan it on making it, wanna know why? Because they knew that another fallout won’t come out in the next 10 years.
But this is par for the course for Bethesda.
Alex, thank you so much for the deep dive into gaming tech. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Keep up the great work!
I don't why people expect competence from Bethesda, they haven't been releasing quality product for years. They still get basic shit wrong that they've been getting wrong for as said years now, like bullets ejecting in impossible backwards positions from some guns in starfield.

Lords of the Fallen was fun but I don't think 30+ post launch updates, most of which were rooted in fixing bugs and performance, is something worth celebrating.
😂
This last update actually fixed 60 fps mode, meanwhile square enix never even bothered to actually fix ff16's performance mode
@@EldenBorn Meanwhile Bethesda never bothered fixing any of their games
@@EldenBorn Optimisation isn't magic. FF16 has some of the more "next gen" (i.e current gen) visuals for a PS5 game. It's like saying Hellblade 2 is horribly optimised.
FF16 threw in a performance mode because people will still get some use out of it in less taxing scenes. It's good that they gave the player the option. *Let's not hold it against them.* It would just be nice if they added a 40fps mode.
Lords Of The Fallen was completely different. It was genuinely a horrifically optimised and broken game that barely worked properly. *It's not comparable.*
The only reason I give them a pass is because the update included a lot of new features that aren't related to bugs.
One thing you can always count on from Bethesda: Radio silence when they screw up. Just went onto their website and there is nothing addressing the recent update mess. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
The ultrawide support is so bad that the screen where you enter your SPECIAL stats and name breaks to the point where you can't enter your name>
Also the stretched HUD and squished models in the crafting benches have been present in Fallout 76 ever since they added ultrawide "support" if they never fixed it in 76 I doubt they'll bother in 4.
If only they (Bethesda) put as much attention to detail in their games as they did the TV show.
I've been pretty forgiving of the xbox developers whose games look/run slightly better on ps5 vs series x. It's issues that 99% of people wouldn't have noticed if digital foundry didn't point it out. And even after pointing it out, the vast majority of people probably still don't notice when playing the game. Agreed that it still shouldn't happen, but it doesn't really bother me.
Having an entire graphical mode that doesn't work on the series x version, but does work on the ps5 version, is absolutely inexcusable, though. How does that even happen?
Doesn´t look good for Series X. My main issue with the Series X is that recording gameplay footage doesn´t work right, my usb 3.0 stick won´t always be recognized as being 3.0, the console is just producing broken video files then. You´re better off using it for games and streaming your gameplay on twitch albeit lower quality and 30 FPS
I'm sick of the Series X getting the shorter end of the stick.
@@deepblue8143and from the first party studios none the less so no one can argue "Sony paid them to do it"
@@lerutyreally simple work around is just use the share feature and upload clips to one drive. You can download them from there at full 4k 60 fps no problem.

Finally, some XBOX rep as Timothy Chalamamay joins the show
What happened to Bethesda? Their game quality has dropped considerably, they refuse to redo their engine from the ground up (which it desperately needs), and now they can't even get an update right, especially on the hardware of the company that owns them. Not to mention that they completely fucked over their modders who have put in so much work to improve the games and keep them alive for years longer than normal.
Good to see Tom on this week's show.
So Bethesda are lying with that tweet? That's outrageous.
Yayy I missed Tom!
Their workmanship is piss poor compared to other studios in the industry.
i loved alexs deep dive. Looked up that cyberpunk od presentation myself and its really fascinating
1:11:52 Alex saying “thanks mate” mid sip in a British accent really threw me off 😂
Why didn't they improve the shadow draw distance in Fallout 4 on console? It's very low. People whine about resolutions these days, but this is a visual setting that actually matters.
It’s low on pc too. Bethesda is awful at optimizing games, idk wtf is going on over there
@@TheGlowingOnee It's not low on PC if you select ultra settings

So you are just bad then and cant adapt to modern fps gameplay
It's a matter of preference really. I prefer doom 93 for it's simplicity but I do get bored of the constant brown/gray/red maps in these games. Stuff like Duke nukem 3d or shadow warrior 97 was always my kinda vibe.
OG Doom all the way, and I don't even mean to denigrate Doom 2016 which I really really like, having beaten it twice. OG Doom is just so seminal and remains so fresh and visceral despite the years.

@@deepblue8143 what other takeaway can i have when the reason he doesnt like the new games is "too many mechanics"??
What did Intel expect when they thought "Oh yeah 300 Watts at insane Voltages are okay..."
Intel is desperate to keep some sort of significance, so they need to use twice as much power to keep up with AMD and then put the blame in MB manufactures for implementing their "intentionally not intentionally worded technical documentation".

Hurray, it's Tom!
Got a spreadsheet to do simple math about the 40->120->60 frame interpolation:
- Usual 40->60: 1/3 frames arrive at time, 1/3 of the frames are duplicated of the frames that arrived on time, 1/3 of the frames arrived late, causing terrible frame pacing.

Thoughts on Using Special-K to force Settings into Fallout 4? Especially on the handeheld PCs?
If yall see it - Fallout on PS5
4K30 and 4K40 both work based on 120hz mode being on / off. 4K60 runs in 60hz mode. 1440p forced resolution keeps the game at 60fps, but quality mode with 120hz on does run the screen in 120hz mode, while performance keeps it in 60hz mode. Kind of odd. Both 60fps output it looks like.

So correct me if I'm wrong, is the radiance cache only available in the ultimate edition of CP77 or do they include it in the 2.0 update?
Gotta love just how stupid the next gen update has been so far at least for the PC Bethesda releasing a broken update is such a Bethesda thing to do and even with all that delay they have done they never properly tested it.
Provided & owned by MSFT (Bethesda), have fun
I played FO4 maybe a year or two ago on PC, maybe I had a mod that adjusted this or ENB had some benefit, but the shadow draw distance seems abysmal in any of these modes on any console. It stands out so much with the sheer volume of dead trees littering the landscape. It's so jarringly bright. If it were my choice, I'd take a small hit to every other visual setting to push the shadows out further.
Wow, spam coments tried to beat me.

How dare they 😤
The whole intro section to this video shows total naivete about how Bethesda operates.
If it's going to severely impact graphical fidelity and performance why would you even want such options?
What an awesome episode of the podcast! It's 2 hours+ and yet I didn't get bored for a single a second. So many interesting topics!
I definitely should try 40fps modes more. It's good you guys have highlighted and pushed for this.
Bethesda disappoints me more each year.

Ok
@DrJones20 glad you agree.
