Pushing for Inclusivity in Skateboarding

- The world of skateboarding can be a very scary place if you’re not a straight cisgender male. From trick names to how products are marketed: sexism, racism and homophobia are deeply entrenched within the culture of skating. VICE News meets with skaters that are doing their part in the decades-long push to make skateboarding a more inclusive space for for women and the queer community.

I grew up skateboarding and my experience is that the skate park was one of THE MOST inclusive and supportive places you could go. Even the 'bad' kids would give you props for pushing yourself to get better. What's happening today are a bunch of self-righteous weenies that want a moral hill to stand on... about anything.
Nah
@@NatsumiTakanawa Did you grew up skateboarding or are you ever going to provide supporting reasoning as to why you disagree? Because if you’re simply seeing this from an outside perspective or you simply had a bad experience in one area, your argument would be invalid because you’re neither part of the community nor are you willing to see things past your narrow view.
I agree with this. The victim culture absolutely goes strong today and there's so much evidence to back that up. Most of my life has been spent in the scene and it's always been about inclusivity and acceptance. The skatepark was one of the only places in town where punk kids, aspiring rap artists, drug addicts and preppy kids could be seen giving fist bumps and hugs all around. The trans community is welcome here.
@@mikerphone. Exactly, the skateboarding community of all things is something the left and Vice should support because of how inclusive they are…but give it up to the left to complain about issues where there isn’t.
Well, when you're LGBT and at a skatepark hearing homophobic comments, it wouldn't sound inclusive to you, would it?
I started skateboarding at 15 and I am
now 31. Skateboarding is the most inclusive sports or extracurricular activity I have done my entire life. Nobody cares who you are or what you look like. People just want you to have fun.
Not according to vice.
Damn straight. This video is so fuckin irritating
That may be your experience, but the skate community in different areas are all different. And depending on who you are it could feel inclusive or exclusive.
@REI SUZUMIYA yea because most boys don’t care about falling and getting hurt. It’s not a sport for the easily defeated.
Not about man or woman, it’s about boy or girl. Did you do this sh*t as a child or not. Period. Most good skaters started as kids and most of them were boys. A little girl that starts skating early can be a good skater as a woman, but if you pick it up after your grown good luck w that.
Oakland is one of the most gentrified parts of the country and many people are losing their homes because of big tech buying out the Bay Area. There are a lot of more crippling problems in Oakland than skateboarding.
Oakland is so ghetto
Lol yea how about corruption
I see you're a Channel 5 fan
@@damien1781 and the ghetto is being gentrified.
You'd think right? According to these people, you're wrong. Gender and one's need for social approval is more important.
Once this economy comes crashing down, they'll really know what it feels like to be alone.
People wake up everyday and find ways to make themselves feel “oppressed”
And there's Vice licking their chops waiting to give them a spotlight
Literally
People wake up every day and find ways to be a hater.

"Let the skating speak for itself"
In other words if you rip, we see that. If you suck, we see that too. That's all there is to it. ✌
Boom. Facts. I skated for years, this video seems a bit one sided
Well her skating spoke for itself. She's not pro. Some company just sponsored her cause she's trans. The person was even male and even with that advantage they're terrible.
Wrong
That’s the thing bro, why are skaters so hostile towards people that can’t skate as good?
That’s how it should be, but it’s not always.
As a former skater in the 90s, skaters have never gave a crap about anything but skill. This is bs.

Sure Hazey, SKILL counts, so too opportunity, a level playing field. You can't get one, without the other. Which is why this thread troubles me so. All you dudes, patting yourselves on the back to push forward some kind of myth and shared "perception" that SKATEBOARDING is "inclusive?" REALLY?!!!
I don't know where you were in the 1990's, but I know where I was. Your kumbaya message is lost on me. What I saw were a bunch of insecure "dudes," taking a smoke on the rim, while rolling their eyes as an "other" drops in?
Ask some girl skaters how "fab" the 1990's were for THEM, eh? In fact, go further! Ask skateboard athletes with "differences" of any kind beyond "white-male-cis-gendered" (typical) skaters, and you may hear something else. Ask the women athletes, plus those across the spectrum of differences, skin color, ethnicity, culture, language, abilities, and yes, along the spectrum of gender identity/sexuality.

The fact is that they got turned pro to cash in on trans and gay skaters who will buy her board. Yall can think otherwise but its the truth

This is garbage. In the mid 90's I skated with jocks, punks, hip hop kids and women. Everyone was included unless you were wack AF.
haha truth.
You sound like you go to the p Diddy after party
Skateboarding is already niche in the grand scheme of things. Being trans is relatively rare in any population. Doesn't mean skating isn't inclusive.

Considering I only started consistently seeing feminine skaters at parks in the past ten years makes me think skating isnt as inclusive as you think. The f- slur was everywhere when I was growing up in skating.
@@MrFucktard12345 definitely the F word was always tossed around.
Well, when you're LGBT and at a skatepark hearing homophobic comments, it wouldn't sound inclusive to you, would it?

You’re not understanding the experiences being highlighted and discussed here. Discrimination happens, sexism and homophobia are real. Go watch old Skateline episodes and hear how Gary talks about female skateboarders and their bodies compared with how he talks about male skaters. Gary is great and he’s gotten better but that’s the kind of attitudes that actually really harm and isolate.

I've personally seen it at some of the parks near me.
It's a good idea to start practicing NOT invalidating other people's experiences just because they differ from your own.
amen. agreed. This has to stop
So fucking old
Being transgender and a skater I have met some of the most kind and accepting people in my city's skate scene, cisgender dudes, women, other gay people ect. But I have also been called slurs, followed back home and berated, and had to switch parks at one point because of just trying to skate while visibly trans. Vice should know that these two things can exist at one time, and we should know that by the numbers, being a trans woman is hard and dangerous pretty much everywhere that you go, including at the skatepark.
-
Marbie talking about her problems with transphobia and sexism in the skating community is not "finding something to be oppressed over". she just came on here to be honest. If the skating community is so inclusive already.. why the heavy ratio? If one of our own skaters is talking about an real issue, should this not be the start more of a discussion of support, and not blame?
-
Why is it that there are skaters here trying to minimize an issue, instead of having empathy, and moving forward so that everyone feels at least just safe to skate? Please understand that if you're not a trans woman you likely will not understand the struggles we go through just existing, but listening to people in amazing communities like this one is a good way to start talking and changing that. Why is your reaction that she is being sensitive and bullshitting when she is clearly talking about things that did happen to her? What about other trans people with the same issues like myself?
Man, I'm dishearted with this conversation here and I hope y'all came away with more perspective.
It seems to me that the decision to go trans comes with a lot of struggles, besides just skating. It's unfortunate the person finds themselves making that decision to begin with.

Saying skateboarding is "most inclusive" is relative and doesn't mean actually inclusive. That a trans woman who was still presenting as masculine would have had a better time at a skatepark or spot than on a football field doesn't negate the fact that there were problems with homophobia and transphobia especially in the past. Just because people talked about it less doesn't mean it didn't happen. lol
I can guarantee you most anyone asking why representation matters has never been truly marginalized in society as a whole. Being bullied by the jocks in high school doesn't count.
And VICE did a wonderful job of highlighting all the people in the comment section who missed the point spectacularly. No one is condemning skateboarding. The point was to highlight growth in skate culture over the years. More people participating in skating because more diverse people are OPENLY paving the way is something that should be praised.

This is fantastic, glad we have come this far in the sk8 community…HOWEVER..😒 in the 70’s and 80’s in San Francisco there were no skate parks period, there was an abandoned pool in hunters point, and a quarter pipe in Potrero Hill..I was one of two people of Color who were givin the business for skating…Everyone in this video has it way easier than we did period…
Just you
YES! Atsard-Dali!! I grew up in SF at that time - I remember the abandoned pool in hunters point, plus Sutro. Nah, I wasn't a skater myself, too risk-avoidant, but hung out and watched with awe, those "outlaws." There were few, if any, people of color/cultural/overt sexual differences at that time. But, wow, skateboarding then was an art, a passion and a risk.
@@ldefaria1 we probably have been at the same place at the same time, hell we might even know each other.. HA. ..🙂 I hope I wasn’t a huge jerk..
Poor you. I was one of the only white people producing hip hop music back in the day. The black people would exclude me and throw racial abuse at me. White rappers these days have no idea how easy they have it. 🙄
When i was in highschool all i wanted to do was play for the varsity volleyball team. Only Girls had a volleyball team at my school and the woman coach and woman principal refused to even allow me to try out because of my gender. Now any man can play in a female league as long as he puts on a dress and grows his hair long and claims to be a victim of opression. I hope those females in power stop being sexist bigots and were fired due to their past actions.
blah blah blah who cares. Just skateboard and stop worrying what others think or the name calling if there is any. I have been in the skating scene for 20+ years and I have never seen bullying happen at the parks or on the street with skaters. NEVER...and we had a gay dude in our circle of skater friends and everyone treated him with respect because HE COULD SKATE! We had black dudes, mexican dudes, girls, white dudes, and even an asian in my group of skate buds as well.
This is scratching the bottom of the barrel vice and this trans person seems to be doing just fine being a skater and trans. shake my damn head on this micro doc. sheesh.....
Vice what are you actually talking about. Skating is a subculture that is just about skating. No one cares who you bang, or what you look like. They just care if you hog the bowl.
You must not have had any skate friends older than 10.
haha that is not a pro skater. some company just sponsored them cause theyre trans.
Rotflmao 😂 😂 ...Vice is just trolling at this point
fr having the dude pushing all the chicks up to the ramp cracked me up
Hell yeah lol
And it’s films like this the reason why Vice went bankrupt.
You are not owed anything in this world by anyone
Ive always found skateboarding to be one of the most inclusive sports. Anybody who goes to the skatepark as a beginner and looks for help will find it. Skaters are so enthusiastic to teach newbies how to skate regardless of who you are and they love seeing people progress. Why? Because the only competition in skateboarding is yourself, getting better means fighting in er fears and doubts which is great. Such a weird video...
Lol not back in the day. I'm black so nah..
@@wesley939try being a white boy learning to rap, or living and going to an inner city school. The hate is insane
Lol the desperation to be a victim is off the charts.
Every time I think, "That's it. They finally jumped the shark with this crap," they come up with something even stupider to kvetch about.
In the world of sports, there's only ONE WAY to push for inclusivity and actually achieve it: focus on the sport, focus on your craft, and don't ask for favors- and you will be included and respected.
Thats why people respect b anderson. Not this old ass chomo rolling around looking like s fridge
