CHOOSING WISELY - for spanish lyrics go to goo.gl/MsDYVw
It might seem crazy what I'm about to say
Less is more can often be the best way
There are tests, treatments and procedures you don't really need
While some are very useful, some at best mislead
[Chorus:]
Now we're choosing wisely
Body scans annual exams can do more harm than good
We're choosing wisely
Imaging for minor things may not give you the truth
We're choosing wisely
Antibiotics for a cold will do nothing but make you ill
We're choosing wisely
A routine screen for many things is often overkill
[Verse 2:]
You tell me you're worried you've got this and that, yeah,
Well, I truly care so don't hold it back, yeah,
But, from what I can see you'll be just fine, yeah,
You don't need that test, let's not waste our time
Here's why
[Chorus]
[Bridge:]
We want to (wisely) keep you - free from harm
That test result (wisely) can - cause alarm
That treatment (wisely) can make you - feel run-down
That drug (wisely) could spin your head - round and round
I said (I want to keep you) (Wisely, wisely, wisely) - free from harm
(Wisely, wisely, wisely)
For that procedure you'll have to wear a - hospital gown
Doing nothing (wisely) can be your - lucky charm
I said
[Chorus 2x]
Hey, come on
(wisely)
Free from harm ... do the right thing ... (wisely)
Free from harm ... that dose is too high ... (wisely)
Free from harm ... use common sense ... (wisely)
Free from harm, I said (let me tell you now)
[Chorus 2x]

All GP surgeries and hospital outpatient waiting rooms should show this video on a continuous loop. It's so good.
Peter Trewby Thanks Peter - couldn't agree more :) But maybe I'm a tad biased.
+Peter Trewby But if they did that, how would they pay for all the latest and most expensive medical equipment to brag about how they have the best diagnostic machines, etc. in their area of the country? How would the surgeons pay for their third home in Vail, CO.
That would require very strong sedation
Another brilliant remix. Sharing to Lean Green and Healthy Facebook group, and tweeting to medical students at Notre Dame (and other followers)
James McCormack strikes again and ... scores! Brilliant video conveying important health messages in a fun way. Well done, congratulations!
I love it. Great song and great lyrics. We all should be aware our health and choose wisely what is good for us. I agree. I work in medical field and I agree that sometimes less means more.
Fantastic! Thank you for putting this together.
I use this video for my students in the EbM lecture. They love it as I do. It is brilliant!
Thanks Sylvia - had fun putting it together and so glad you use it.
so catchy - it's going to be a lot of fun seeing the student response to this!
Congrats on a superb and timely effort: I hope the video and the message go viral. The song is certainly infectious!
Thanks to everyone who took the time to leave such positive comments. I'm hoping this video/song will encourage more people to not only think about the concept of choosing wisely but also push people into action - and also make you happy just listening to the song. Liam and Shae did a tremendous job with the vocals.
Hi!! This video is brilliant, I’m a medical assistant from Belgium and I’m thinking of doing the same thing but in French as part of my thesis. Would you agree to share your creative process with me?
Have a nice day!
@@claranisin7538 Sure - contact me through UBC in Vancouver
James, thanks for reminding us of what is important...quality of life! Less is often more. Cheers, Mark
Awesome - added to one playlist and shared on our social networks.
Thank you James and keep up the great work (y)
This is GREAT. Very well done and important messages to empower patients. Thanks for making. Hope you can get it on TV.
Love It! Great video clip, will hope to have out clinic run this on the screen in the waiting room…..
Brilliant example of adult to adult social marketing for a social purpose. Of the thousands of things I have seen and read this week - this will stay with me longest and has fired my imagination most. Thank you.
Just came across this by accident. It'll be an excellent way of introducing clinical iatragenesis to my students. Thanks!
This may be your most brilliant video so far. And that's saying a lot! I applaud you, sir. Also, I immediately forward it to all my medical students. Thanks for making my job easier. :)
Jan - what a kind response - it was definitely a lot of fun to make - just hope it makes people think and then choose wisely. Thanks!!!
James McCormack I teach (clinical) pharmacology and more often than not I find myself talking about polypharmacy, EBM or just common sense that often seems to be missing in modern medicine. I have seen too many patients being literally drugged to death by 20 or more well-meant prescriptions that I consider it one of our main goals to teach the next generation of doctors more about when NOT to prescribe, when to STOP medication and to ALWAYS talk to their patients. :)
Jan Strojil And to really listen to them, I hope.
#CHEERS to You, Professor!!! - what a #superb way to make us all #choosewisely as well as bringing in some #happiness along in a great Format !

Great great great!!! Funny and happy!!! As life should be while we are still HEALTHY!!!
This is a great message and tune! Ask your doctor about what is right for you...and Choose Wisely!
I absolutely admire this video! How brilliant to adress this problem. It should be shown in GP Practices and hospital waiting rooms. A translation in Dutch would be necessary though....
Very good professor!
This is the most amazing copyright notice I've ever seen. You're amazing! Why can't everyone be as clear as that when using third party material!
This is so fantastic - I was just chatting about this last night.
♥♥♥
This is fantastic! Thank you.
❤
Brilliant approach and content.
♥
Great video and message!
Thanks Dr. McCormack!
Brilliant
Hi Linda. Glad you enjoyed it - please feel free to link - it's why I made the video!
James McCormack love it
Well done - should play this in ED waiting rooms around the world
Let's get back to this (mindset) NOW and forever!!!
Great song, great message!! My professor for midwifery recommended it the other day. Keep goin!!
Enjoy yourself, enjoy people, enjoy life...it's the better drug. Choose wisely!
Splendido.
Italian translation of Choosing Wisely.
Bene, io mi prendo realmente cura di me, quindi stai tranquillo
Vogliamo (saggiamente) tenervi liberi dai danni
Io voglio (saggiamente, saggiamente, saggiamente) liberarvi dai danni
Saggiamente, saggiamente, saggiamente
this is lowkey fire
Dang, homie can sing!
Choosing wisely ist fighting against many interests, well done!
I think, in the (western) health care system, there are only GP who are working for health instead of collecting diagnoses....
AW, GP
Great promotional video! Need a Japanese version!
Hi James, what a great idea and an excellent advice!!!
We'd very much like to play this video on the patient screen at our surgery (UK). Can we get your permission to do so? Would have to use an online converter, if you give us your permission. Thanks!
Would love it if you would do that - just drop me an email - my contact information can be found through the University of British Columbia
HSRM Represent !!
Our pHd professor just played this in our classes.... 10/10
Thanks!! You couldn't have gone to 11?🤣
espectacular!!!
The doctors that are involved in the Choose Wisely Campaign of planting stories that are designed to interfere with the critical health decisions of doctors and patients by promoting fear and distrust of the medical profession and its technology in patients and limiting doctors from choosing advanced technology to diagnose and treat patients symptoms because of cost are in direct violation of the oath that they took when they became a doctor.
A piece of art to inspire all healthcare providers to activate the evidence based healthcare movement STAT
Fabulous! I'm a physician and I always say the same for my patients, but I make no singing
This is wonderful. James, I work for a not for profit health care quality improvement foundation. I would love to put a link to this on our website and share with our members --- can I have your permission to do that? Great job.
Nice job! Where was it filmed?
Hi Gary - as mentioned in the notes the video is a mash-up of content from 24hoursofhappy.com
Great video! Do you work with the ABIM Foundation's Choosing Wisely initiative on this?
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it - no I don't work for ABIM - I showed them a draft a week or so before I put it out - you'll notice that their logos aren't on it and the "choosing wiselys" are all in lower case - obviously I "stole" a number of their messages - and added a number of my own. The Initiative Choosing Wisely is very important but the concept choosing wisely is the bottom common sense line.
Great Video
Awesome clip on a very important issue !!

James McCormack, we need all your videos, 100% of them in Spanish or at least with subtitles in Spanish, please absolutely everyone, I want to spread them to all of us who love evidence-based medicine, it is urgent.
This is one of my core beliefs after practicing >25 years.
Whtas crazy is how MS patients have been treated on MS drug has had furniture polish added to it the lists are endless
Okay.... I did not see that one coming, glad I could be your token asian lol
Hope you enjoyed the interpretation/parody of the song into a message about a number of very important medical health/medical issues. We all have these issues regardless of age, gender and race. :)
What about vaccines?
