Forget about the creepy smiling curse people, miss girl had a horrible circle of unsupportive, terrible people who would sooner treat her like she's genuinely insane than try to actually listen and help her. Except for her ex boyfriend. Dude was the best not boyfriend by actually trying to help her out and got cursed in return. Fantastic.

The lines “Your mind makes it real” and “Your mind is so inviting” is really thought provoking and eye opening to me. As someone with a few mental illnesses and who has experienced trauma since childhood. Your mind can truly make something real once you think something over and over and have it as your reality, it’s hard to change it and unlearn it. Like if you grew up being shut down and bullied by your parents and peers it’s hard to make friendships as a adult and hard to open up because you’re used to being shut down & bullied. Another instance is if you have it in your mind that your friend is using you because maybe they forgot to say thank you for a favor you did or they weren’t as appreciative as you’d hope they’d be everything they do is gonna come off as them using you because you ALREADY have that thought in your mind. I have no idea if i made any sense here but hopefully you (or anyone else reading this) gets what i was saying!

I get it, I grew up in an abusive household and it caused my mind to become sooo messed up. It causes me to believe everyone is just out to hurt me, even if they are being wholesome and wanting the best for me my mind sees it as they want something in return. I am going to therapy for it and thankfully that’s helped so much but sheesh! The mind is powerful.

I left the theater dragging my jaw in the floor after seeing the ending of this movie, I swear, it left me traumatized (ironically). I think it graphed so well the idea of mental illness and trauma. Also, the way she kind of explain the obvious through the scenes were not as unnecessary to me because the whole movie I was asking myself "is it a real monster/spirit or is it a metaphor of trauma?" and i was kind of questioning it with the protagonist all along, and when I realized it was both a monster and a metaphor I was so shocked. It enters my top ten favorite horror movies 🍿

This is movie had strong things going for it, talking about mental illness, how it makes communication difficult, how it strains or straight up ruins relationships, how isolating and lonely it feels, etc. And for a while it looked to be giving the positive message that you can overcame your traumas, go stronger from it and move on - NOPE JUST KIDDING, mental illness is a real demon and it will defeat you. If it weren't for that last bit, it would be a GREAT movie. Sosie Bacon is absolutely phenomenal in it, I really wish I could love this movie more.

After I saw the movie, I watched podcasts about and read up on it. In hindsight the message of the film seems so clear but when I saw it for the first I had a similar reaction as you. The movie is diving into themes of depression, how loved ones and peers view it from the outside, and how it can even be passed on through genetics and trauma. I've found a new appreciation for it for those reasons and I'd recommend reading up on it and fully rewatching (if you want to!) because I think it's a better movie when you know that each conversation and disastrous event is respresenting such real moments in the lives of people with depression.

The demon takes control of the senses and have the victims hallucinate intil they are weak enough mentally to be taken over, then it forces them to kill themselves infront of other people to create trauma and pass on the curse. The demon had Rose believe that she beated her trauma and the curse and had her stay in the house long enough till the Ex reached the house.
When the Ex was close, the Demon changed the hallucinations to show Rose that all her efforts are useless and break her mentally. After that, it forced her to kill herself infront of the Ex to pass on the curse.
I believe that the only was to stop this chain is for the cursed one to isolate themselves and kill themselves in the first few days since delaying gives the Demon more authority over the senses of the cursed.

I loved this but from the trailers I really wasn't expecting a lot. I was mostly curious. The way it portrayed trauma and not knowing what is real was super disturbing. I saw it in Dolby and there were two college age girls sitting next to me laughing and making jokes to each other. When the scene with the audio file jumpscare happened they jumped about a foot out of their seats. They sat in the same seat hiding their faces throughout the rest of the movie. When they left one said "I'm literally traumatized now"

Smile is a horror movie that has some good moments and visuals, and decent acting from Sosie Bacon. The plot is not very strong, but it has some twists and surprises. The scares are not very scary, but they are fun. It’s not very original, but it’s entertaining. It’s a decent horror movie that you can watch if you’re in the mood. 3/5 stars.

It's interesting to think about the recurring themes in scary stories.
One of them is the 'chain' - where something has to pass from one person to the next. 'It Follows', 'The Ring', some hints of it in final destination. Before the internet we still had it in the concept of a 'chain mail.' It's like rooted in our psychology that one of the ways to avoid evil is to pass it on. Maybe some animal idea that if a monster eats the prey next to you it will leave you alone.
This movie also has another recurring thing in scary stories which is the Imposter. The stranger posing as someone you know. I suppose there's an extra sense of creepiness in something that's suppose to be safe actually being dangerous.

Oh boy. It Follows but make it mental illness/trauma instead of an STI. This is a movie I saw in theaters and found enjoyable at first but the second half was drawn out and ended up being terrible with the messaging I was sort of into being thrown out the window with the twist. Also, the more I've thought about it since watching it the first time, the more I've found it a movie with excessive jumpscares (that work on people, sure), weird loose-ends and set-up that is ignored in the end, and kinda gross exploitation of mental illness narratives. Like, what does it say that this being that's attached to trauma is transferred by the person being around others? The mentally ill shouldn't be around others in case they pass it on? It'll kill you? Also, is it saying something about all of the institutions/people who are meant to help when they all don't do a good job listening here? And regardless of that, she confronts her previous trauma (with every person the being latched onto having a previous trauma before the "transfer") and then the being still does its thing?
It has some decent visuals, sure, but trauma doesn't just end a person's life. Yes, trauma can stick with you, but it's best to confront and deal with that trauma and its impact decreases and you manage it.
That was one of my big issues with the movie, because I saw the messaging of how society often fails the mentally ill by not listening to them and her managing to deal with her trauma to the extent of apologizing for what she was like in her relationship with her ex, and they threw it away to say that there's no escape or recovery from trauma--you're going to take your own life and pass on this mental illness. That's where it differs from some of the horror movies I can appreciate for the messaging about mental illness like in Babadook. There they learn to live with it--manage it--and things turn out ok.
Sorry for rambling about this, but I left the movie theater very displeased and every time I think about it more things pop out and make my opinion of the movie a bit lower.
And no judgement on anyone who enjoyed this movie, I know the jumpscares worked on people and that they used some effective things in the movie. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But anyway, I'm going to stop myself here and just say I hope everyone has a lovely day.

Interesting I loved the movie and while I understand where you are coming from why does a movie have to have a deep message though ? Can’t it be just a a horror movie trying a new twist on a competitive horror market with a smile being used as a sinister plot point why do we have to compare real life mental heath with this movie its not aiming to be that deep( at least not a very detailed conversation on this matter) but that is just me no hate .

About your point about the message the movie was trying to convey, I think (and Dead Meat also talked about this in their podcast) the reason why Rose doesn't defeat the demon is that she didn't deal with her trauma earlier on. The demon feeds itself with trauma and the moment she gets the curse she is doomed because she can't just come to terms with her trauma in a week, a trauma she's been pushing back since she was a child.
The Dead Meat podcast explained it better than me, so I recommend to checking them out, but what i said was what i got out of the film

A less intense horror movie that has an actual mystery to reveal and is criminally underseen thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and Disney having no clue how to market it after they bought Fox is The Empty Man. The chain mail, pass it on myth has been in society for a long time. Even the terrible Truth or Dare movie that the whole smile motif reminded me of uses a similar premise. It Follows and The Ring are two more modern movies that came to me off the top of my head have that trope.

After thinking about this, I believe that the only way to defeat the Smile demon is for the curse to be passed on to someone with no friends or family who could possibly be traumatized by their death and for them to kill themselves humanely with no audience before they got possessed. Or if the curse got passed onto someone just a day before they die of old age surrounded by their family.
