Broken But Beautiful - Wood Turning

- It's always fun to turn a new, to me, species of wood and this Sumac is no exception. Inside is some beautiful color and grain but outside is a feature I consider really special. The bark is also very nice. Finished in shellac.
There are also some new sanders shown in this video and they are now available for you if you feel they can help you. I'm am not sponsored and receive nothing for this, I just want you to know about them in case they may help you with your woodturning. www.TuffyMarginez.com

To all the readers of these comments, I wish to propose a toast to Phil Anderson, the man whose bark is always better than his bite. If you wish to join me in this toast it should be done with prune juice, served in a bowl with a knot hole, worm holes or missing bark inclusion in the lower half of the bowl. So ladies and gentlemen drink fast. Phil, you're the man. Keep up the great work.
Haha, thanks, Pete! 😊
Doesn't get any more interesting than a piece like that. I scored 2 sumac trees last week from the burn pile on my sister's property. Rootballs and all except for branches. Wood has a gold tone. Still green but sealed and stored. When I bought my first lathe 38 years ago I used to scrounge branches from state parks and sumac was one of the first pieces I turned. Didn't really make anything just happy to be turning. Everything became a candle holder. Always recalled the gold toned wood.
Ah, yes, I remember the candle holder years, Matthew. We practice, we grow. Thank you for watching! 😊
Another superb piece and turn Phil.
Cheers
Mike
Hope all is well with you, Mike! Take good care and thank you, my friend! 😊
Howdy Phil
what a beautiful piece , so much is going on..... Type of peace every time you look at it will see something different
that finish you put on it really makes it look so nice
I too like the way that Branch came out gives it more to look at see different things , first thing came into my mind , probably cuz I'm hungry right now , is spaghetti ...LOL
I can see a cow's skeleton head on the bottom
beautiful piece Phil
keep on turnin'
Yep, a lot of pieces have hidden figures, Bruce, but this one might be the champ. Thank you, now go eat!
Hello Phil, I have watched your videos for a long time. I really like what you do. I gave away both my wood lathes a while back because I was tired of spindle turning. You have made me want to get another lathe.
I don't have a lot of room so I am looking for one with a shorter bed and a wider swing. As far as I am, concerned you have the best turning videos on RUclips.
You and I are about the same age, I turn 72 late last year. I was very sorry to learn about your spouse's passing away. Hang in there. I need you to get me started & keep me going.
I live in eastern Kansas. We have some interesting wood. A lot of sycamore, red & white oak, eastern red bud & Bois D'Arc (also known Osage Orange & Hedge), mulberry, maple, ash & various fruit wood.
Don B.
Howdy, Don! I'm happy you are considering getting back into turning and trying some bowls. When I was 69 I posed the question "am I too old to buy a new lathe?" The response was overwhelmingly, "go for it!" I'm so glad I did! My turning and my viewers are what get me out of bed in the morning. You just have to have a hobby to keep busy and keep the mind working, I think. Sounds like you have a great selection of potential turning stock. Go for it! Merry and Happy to you and yours, Don! 😊
Very nice bowl Mr. Phil
Thank you so much, Donald!
Yes
The broken branch adds a lot. Almost looks like hand bones or alien bones . Another fine job Sir
Glad you like it, thank you! 😊
What a beautiful piece of wood Phil. And a terrific job of capturing all those natural features in it.
The branch is by far the star of this one. I love how it wraps around. In one view it looked like it was trying to peak around so the camera could see it. I could almost hear it saying...Hey Look At Me!
I have turned a few pieces of Sumac but not being crotch pieces look nothing like this one.
Plus there are different types I guess. The Sumac plant is some type of poison ivy. Not the trees though so your safe.
Oh those sanders look great!
Great job my friend,
Gary
Thank you, Gary! It's hard to go wrong when you have wood like this to deal with. That branch was a lucky happenstance for me. And, yes, it is saying Look At Me! Have a great day, my friend! I'll be checking out your newest video as soon as I finish reading these comments.
Phil
Phil, You have a great eye for turning something what I used to consider wood for the fire pit. I really like how you guide us through your turning process. You do such a great job explaining how you see and do the turnings. Thank you and God bless you.🙂
Thank you so much, Connie! 😊
I shared this to my machinist hubby😉. I love it and with No disrespect at all....your comment made me sing the old Sesame street song...There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza...🤣
You're great and I love the piece!👍😁💕
Ahhh, now I understand, thank you! I'm way to old for the Sesame Street reference, I was thinking the Ricky Nelson version of the song, My Bucket's Got a Hole in it but you are probably too young for that! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Ya I don't know the song you're referring to but here is the Sesame street one. It's hilarious 🤣 ruclips.net/video/zYY6Q4nRTS4/видео.html
I bought those sanders, they are life savers. They are real good with the deeper bowls and vases that nothing else fits in. Thanks to you and Tuffy for them. E.T. with a gas mask! I do love the strange wood that you get to turn, the sumac I'm familiar with here in Portland are kind of short and skinny.
Thank you, Brad!😀
And once again Phil, you took a piece of wood that most people would see as firewood, threw it on your lathe and ended up with an absolutely beautiful bowl! My hat is off to you sir! Be safe and stay healthy my friend.
Soon there will be no firewood, David. Another extinct species. LOL! Thank you!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Only because you turned it all Phil! LOL
I freaking love this bowl. Especially that big ol' hole. And every other single aspect which makes it unique. I could picture this on my coffee table in a place of honor.
Thank you, Kathleen! My daughter scooped it right up! 😃
Lord have mercy am a beginner at wood turning but my lord you are one of the BEST I have seen on you tube. My hat is off to you sir. I’m am learning so much from your videos
Glad to know this, Brandon! I do like to turn a little bit different than some others. Just something to consider as you begin your own journey into turning. Enjoy whatever you do! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I am a welder millwright by trade so I can’t put much time into it as I would like to but I get a lot of compliments on what I have done but to me it’s never good enough I guess it’s because I k where all the imperfections are. I am definitely my own worst critic. I guess my biggest obstacles are my finishes. Do you have any videos in particular that I could watch specifically to finishes that you would recommend.? Mr. Phil
120% perfect and unique, absolutely gorgeous❤️👍🤩🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
My daughter grabbed this one right up, Maud! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I don’t blame her and it’s still in the family, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder 💕💕💕
I went back in time and saw this piece before you turned it. I know it would be nice. Very unique but beautiful bowl!! Those crotches with branches are my favorite to turn. They are a rough ride to the end, but the results is amazing. Awesome piece Phil...Thank you
😊
Yes, it is an interesting piece! The void doesn't detract at all from the shape of it. Nice one!
😊
Lovely work Phil
I appreciate that, Robert!
The bowl came out great. So much to see. I love the branch feature.
😊
I’d like to echo someone said it’s like you’re dad or uncle showing you how, not only do I love your turning I like you’re commentary Phil that’s a skill on its own to captivate and ordinance there’s not many videos I can watch full term but yours gets me hooked thanks
Thank you for this, Jeff! 😊
I turned some wet sumac last year. Came out lovely but stank and the amount of sticky sap that came out of it was outrageous!
Good work as always Phil!
Oh no! Sounds like a mess! Thank you, David!
Very beautiful and original! Good luck!
Thank you, Aleksey! Cheers! 😊
I don't know how you do but you never deliver common results! Great. Thanks.
Wow, thank you, Yves!
That's really cool. I'm glad you left that branch, it does make the piece.
Thank you, Heather! 😊
I sure enjoy how you allow the piece to evolve. Also your sense of timing using acceleration enhances the video.
Thank you very much, Kevin! 😃
The inside looked like a Van Gogh painting! Its a cool piece! I got lucky yesterday and scored a 3 foot long section of a plum tree! It's only 5-6" around but it looks like it will be pretty colorful. See you in the next one Phil
Cool, Plum is a great wood to turn, so much color! Enjoy! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop ❤️
Hi Phil. Once again you have reached deep inside a piece of firewood and turned out a beautiful work of art. No sweeteners, MSG, or colorants of any kind. LOL Especially no resins to fill voids. I don't see much point in using a nice but small piece of burl then add 10 gallons of resin and turn away all but a bare glimpse of the burl leaving a nicely turned chunk of colorful resin. When you turn a piece I can see the natural imperfections and see how you found a face or an ear or even a stogie. LOL. I look forward to seeing more of your magical works of art. Also, thanks for the lessons. Bill Riley
Thank you very much, Bill! 😊
Just a quick comment to let you know how much I (and my kids) enjoy your videos. Personally, I find them relaxing to watch and I'm always interested to see the finished piece. I hope you're well, best wishes from across the pond in rainy Manchester, UK.
Yesterday was beautiful, raining here today, too, Andrew! 😊
Another exclusive bowl. I love all yours videos and voice.
Thanks
Glad you like them! Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, Zevl! 😊
It's so cool as you said. The inside looks like a smile to me.
It does! 😊
Absolutely stunning. Love it. 💜💜💜💜
So glad, thank you, J'Lyssa!
I'm so glad you ended up liking that hole, as I thought it was the best feature. Well, at least a close second to that cool formation on the bottom.
😊
I love the void in the bowl. Beautiful
Me too! Thank you, Diane! 😊
Cool turn Phil. It came out great. Thanks, V
Glad you like it, thank you!
Super nice job Phil!!!!!
I appreciate that, Emmett! 😊
By golly, you did it again Phil! Great job!
Wow, thanks, Michael! 😊
Another gorgeous piece.
Thanks Phil
Thanks for watching, Stan! 😊
Wow, the inside of this bowl looks like a heart too. Love your patience in finding the inner beauty of a strange chunk of nature.!!
Thank you very much, Lulu! 😊
This is one of my favorites Phil.
I'm glad, thank you!
I just caught you fought cancer like me, I started watching you because and through mine. Thank you for being there for me. Funny ha, you there for me, me there for you. I’m excellent hope you are too.
Haha, glad we could get through it all together! 😊
A lot of work but worth it. The bottom of the inside looks like an open claim shell. The grain and colors are lovely.
😊
I love the way you work with the character of a piece of wood. You see the beauty in the imperfections
Thank you so much, Lili! 😊
Always beautiful with a friendly commentary leading to a desire for more. Keep up the
Thank you so much! 😊
You do amazing work. I have watched many of your videos and I am awe struck by the beauty of the turned pieces. On this piece I thought the hole looked like a handle on the side of the bowl.
Thank you so much for spending some time with me and for your comment, much appreciated, Jeannie! 😊
Very Beautiful Piece Phil! Looks just like ET the one way ya turned it all kinds of neat stuff in that one with some Awesome bark!
Wow, thanks, Kimsey! I appreciate your time! 😊
The grain is amazing and you enhanced it perfectly
😊
I thought it was going to turn out terrible, but, I was wrong...beautiful piece!
Glad you like it, Bud, thank you! 😊
Didn't use to like the love edge thing . But the more of your work I see , the more I like it. Keep up the great work.
I appreciate that, Oliver! It's not what most people think of when they think of work coming from a lathe. For me, it's just about the only way I think of turnings. I do agree, it takes a little getting used to and I appreciate that you stuck with me long enough to see it, too! 😊
I really like how you talk through your thinking. You seem like a really nice guy. I hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you so much, Scotty! You and yours have a great Christmas as well! 😊
Unique and a piece of Art.
😊
Another Phil fix. And another beauty. This inspired me to make one similar in shape. Can’t seem to get your finish though.
Hoping you’re doing ok Phil. Thinking of you and wishing you well. Sending healing thoughts. Xx
Thank you very much, Mandy, much appreciated! 😊
I can set and watch you over and over.

Absolutely beautiful Phil - as usual
Thank you, Barry! 😊
Just love this bowl hole and all
Cool, thanks, Christine! 😊
Happy Holidays Phil! About 15 months ago I was having trouble connecting with my father who was suffering with dementia. We watched all types of videos in a hope of finding something that sparked an interest. One day I put "wood turning" into the search field. Your video was the first one in the queue so we watched. He loved it and he watches new episodes each week, and more importantly he has re-engage with life and now works on his wood projects. You even inspired me to return to turning. I enjoy the way you explain what you are doing and why; it is very helpful and entertaining. I use to only turn store-bought blanks and now I am out there looking for interesting logs and root balls. You have greatly broaden my idea of what can be turned and how unique the pieces can be. Thank you. :)
Kari, I don't even know what to say. Your comment has touched me like no other. I guess the truth is, I'm the lucky one because my video appeared first and I get to read your account of how I may have helped your father. I just think of what I do as a way to entertain people and myself. I never thought any of it could be actually useful much less helpful. And then you tell me you've re-thought your turning stock! Could my day even get any better? Thank you so much for your very kind words.
Phil
Absolutely love this one! Thanks for all your videos. 😁
You are so welcome, Margaret, thank you for watching! 😊
Absolutely Beautiful. I just love wood.
Thank you very much! 😊
Amazing piece following Mother Nature's mind. Greatly enjoy seeing you tackle jobs, others would have given up on. Merry Christmas and stay healthy.
Thank you very much, Mitch! Merry Christmas!
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
Sure enough, Jane! 😊
Amazing job Phil. Lots of nature.
Thank you, L W! 😊
Another beautiful uncovering! The branch is real nice and I like the hole!

Beautiful. I love it all, particularly the bottom.
Yay! Thank you! 😊
When you hold it up I see a catcher's mitt. Beautiful piece. I love it.
Thank you! 😊 Cheers!
All thumbs up, another beautiful piece as always 😀
I appreciate that, Tommy, thank you!
Perhaps making a comment may seem so trivial against the sheer beauty of this piece Phil. The branch 'peeking' around its part of the bowl 'steals the show' to me It is, without doubt the major feature that defines this piece. I have to change my direction of viewing this piece from looking at a bowl to looking at a majestic piece of Art. It screams out, 'I am a piece of Sculpture', as does SO much of your work but it is not 'work' when you create Phil, it is always always overflowing with the sheer joy & delight of the artist, YOU. There is certainly NO need for you to ever try & 'hide your light (Art) under a bushel'. Every piece you turn makes each viewer feel that they are right there with you, with every move of a gouge & with every thought of the creator. You, sir, are a sheer joy to watch as you apply your immense talents 'for all to see'. You will always do EVERYTHING in your power to release the inner beauty of a piece of wood as you delicately, intimately relate with every piece of wood that has the privilege of entering into your reach. You are a master of your craft & we all love you for what you bring to your videos. Keep up your GREAT creations my friend. Don from South Aust.
As always, Don, your kind words make me blush, just a little. I'm so glad you enjoyed the great reveal of this piece. It is a delight. Thank you so much!
Great looking bowl Phil
Thank you!
Very Interesting 🤔 Beautiful ❤️ wood!
😃
darn this would have been a Wonderful birthday present but you were 3 days to late . Plus l didn't have my computer till a year after. lol it is beautiful. as most of your pieces are. What am l saying they are all worthy of being on display.. Thank you Phil.
😊
You are truly the king of bowls out of strange shapes of wood. Nice job Phil.
I'll take that, Suzette, thank you! 😊
Very creative work. Thanks for sharing, Phil.
My pleasure, Hugh, thank you for watching!
Yet again first class workmanship on a wonderful piece of wood.👍👍
Wow, thank you, Martin!
Phil... Great work as always! You're right, the "hole" only enhances the bowl. I really like the way you use the whole piece, bark included for the finished effect. It makes all your work look like what it is....part of a tree. Most people seem to go out of their way to get rid of all the parts that make up the tree, & have sharp, pristine edges. THERE ARE NO STRAIGHT LINES IN NATURE!! You use that to enhance your creations! Well done, Sir - keep 'em coming!!
PS - Re: Tuffy Marginez - my guess is the dog's name was "TUFFY" & his family name is "MARGINEZ".
I'm so glad you understand my approach to woodturning, Phil! My regular viewers get it, new viewers wonder what the heck I'm doing! LOL! Thank you! 😃
That's NOT a bowl Phil... it's an exquisite work of ART... you've done it again, taken the bar and lifted it higher. This was a real pleasure to watch... thanks for sharing
Wow, thank you, Ruthlyn! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Hi Phil, Beautiful!! Watching you turn is like watching an artist paint, When they paint the picture develops with every brush stroke. When you turn the "picture or bowl" develops with every pass of your gouge. I saw the faces as well. Great work as always Phil. Take care my friend. Cheers, Huw
Wow, thank you, Huw! I'm glad I could provide something "artsy" for your viewing pleasure today. Stay safe and healthy, buddy!
Very interesting and amazing at the same time. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, Mark, thank you! 😊
Never heard of the wood before, but looks great Phil, thanks for sharing. Stay Safe. Jules, Droitwich, England
There are many varieties, Jules. You probably have something similar, just called by a different name. Thanks for stopping by today, I appreciate your time!
Not a pretty piece of wood to start but now a beautiful piece. Enjoy your videos amazing how the wood comes out.
Glad you like them, Virginia, thank you so much!! 😊
You have inspired me sir! Just last week a friend came by with some crazy wood and asked if I wanted any of it -- of course the answer was yes! Included were 2 root balls and I immediately thought of your work. We are going to have some 60 degree weather this weekend and I am going to take a hose to them and wash out as much dirt as I can. Then, I am going to turn them!
Thank you for sharing your skills and insights!
I don't know if I should be more impressed by your wood collection or your 60° weather, Joel! Whichever, sounds like you've got good times ahead!
Looks like ET. It turned out absolutely fantastic. I love it.

Indeed, Carsten, thank you! 😊
Good looking bowl Phil, very cool looking!!

Amazing lovely colours great bit good work take care 👍
Thank you, Kirk! You too!
Hey Phil, Absolutely beautiful bowl there! I use Zinser shellac also but I use Minwax sanding sealer (cant find Zinser sealer locally). With Minwax I dont have an issue with brush strokes. Not sure why. But it does bubble on me so I have to blot with a rag to get rid of the bubbles in spots. I guess it is 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other. LOL Oh almost forgot to mention this but when I finish something with sealer and shellac after I remove the tenon I finish the bottom with Howard's Feed-N-Wax. On one piece I accidentally got some feed-n-wax on the shellaced side of the bowl and it brought out the shine even more so now after finishing with shellac I put one light coat of Feed-n-wax over the entire bowl. I was amazed to find that happy accident. :) Yall have a wonderful day.
😊
I think I've seen all your videos to date and this is probably my favorite. You are an artist!
I appreciate your comment so much, Patricio, thank you! 😋

This is 1 of my top favorites out of a long list of favorites. I agree with you Phil that branch is just stunning. Every time you finish a piece and are showing it and describing how it feels. I want so badly to put my hand through my phone and feel it. They all look like they feel so smooth and so buttery. 🤗

Oh, buttery. Yes! That is a good way to describe a lot of the finished pieces, Alice. I'm glad you can see/imagine that. I'm so glad you like this piece, thank you very much! 😊
More brightness to an otherwise dreary Scottish day. Thanks Phil for another superb piece.
Ah, but that dreariness (we have it here, too) is what leads to those green Scottish hillsides. I'm glad I could bring just a bit of sunshine into your day, Kevin, thank you!
Love it Phil great looking bowl
😊
Another beauty, Phil. You certainly made the best of it to preserve as many features as you could. Just be careful that your M&M's don't fall out of that hole in the side. If you look at the inside with the branch down and to the right, it looks like the profile of one ugly guy with a big nose (lol). Wait a minute - that's me! Stay safe.

LOL! Funny stuff, Bill, thank you! 😊
