I'm also in RI, I've tried a bunch of edging materials over the years for beds, driveway, etc. I think the one that has held up best is one we inherited in our new home around some beds - heavy steel edging. Do a search for Sure-Loc steel edging, something like that would probably be good. I see a bunch of people saying cobbles, and while they are nice and a possibility, you might want to do the steel edge first, let them lay the asphalt, then once it's all set up against the steel edging, add cobbles by cutting back into the lawn and setting crushed stone below them as well so it's nice and stable. Otherwise, if you just put cobbles and let them put the asphalt right up to the cobbles, I've seen where the asphalt starts to crumble away from the cobbles because it's not a smooth interface and asphalt is very particulate. As with all things, prep is key.
I finally got my sticker and magnet! I was whistling the grass daddy tune all day while working on my front yard Reno. I'm an hour north in Massachusetts, in terms of driveway edging, I used a cheap circular saw I got from harbor freight with a diamond blade and removed 3 inches from the sides. Make sure to draw a straight line with line and chalk or marking crayon first. I have perfect edges now. However, don't forget to remove the gravel underneath the asphalt.
wahoo! I'm already out of stock again on the stickers!
I would do the thick rubber trim for edging.
My dad did patio pavers on the side of his asphalt driveway with aluminum paver edging to keep it in line. It looks fantastic and he can run a stick edger along side of it to get crisp lines. That's what you're looking for.
If a concrete driveway is failing after only 3 years it was not installed correctly. I am by buffalo,ny so you know we get very cold snowy winters. Concrete driveways are everywhere. I just had a large concrete parking pad and asphalt driveway installed last summer. They dug down like 2ft and installed 18in of crushed stone underneath. Its not moving at all. Proper install is key.
The reason the person down the road had chipping in their concrete was because they salted their driveway in the winter. I didn't know much about it until the city redid everyone's driveway out to the road from the sidewalk and mine has pits from salting in the winter. Concrete is more expensive but lasts longer with less maintenance.
Belgian block!!! I have a asphalt driveway with Belgian block edging. Looks great!!! It’s a Nice clean look.
If all else fails, you could plant some creeping phlox along both sides of your driveway.
Use a paver border
Belgium block edging, , I have an asphalt driveway but the edge is done with Belgium block that are recessing to the ground at grade, so this way I can go right over it with the lawn mower, not a curb but level grade between the driveway and the lawn
Tim,
Cobble stone edge is the way to go. The Little granite blocks look great with new &/or a sealed asphalt drive way.
Plenty of local places to get them at a very good price.
Watson Materials in West Greenwich a good place to start.
how about asphalt dirveway with concrete curbing (edge). Put in the curbing first then the asphalt would be put in between the curbing.
I see the same thing all over my neighborhood. Everyone seems to think the lower they cut the less they have to mow.
jimmy Lewg less mowing when it’s dead or dormant!🤣🤣🤣🤣
When I was cutting lawns as a summer job, we had a saying: Cut it high, it won’t die. Cut it low, it won’t grow, & you make no dough!!
Just an idea for your edging. 6 inch edge of white granular stone with a weed barrier tarp underneath.Create a lower channel for the stone to nest in so its flush with the soil. You're the man by the way. I love your videos.
Cobblestone FTW.
Send me a tshirt! You rock Grass Daddy!
Edging for minimal look, consider steal if you want something more decorative, consider patio pavers. Personally, patio pavers looks great when you contrast it wtih black asphalt to gray or lighter colored pavers.
I haven't done a whole lot in the yard lately either. Just mowing higher and trying to keep it green.
I came from an asphalt drive to a concrete drive. But it's about 50:50 in my hood. Point is the old drives are expiring and the new asphalt ones going in have crisp edges as is. I think the process has improved.
Belgian blocks along the sides of the riveway !!
They look fancy as heck !!
Use concrete. You are a dad. Asphalt is black, and when heated tracks in the house.
I feel yah , I have to re_seal my driveway soon. I would do the thick rubber trim for edging.
I didn't know you were in RI. I'm in Attleboro. Howdy neighbor!
Concrete is typically more than asphalt. Maybe get a concrete driveway with metal wiring instead of fibers. Concrete also lasts longer than asphalt. Use sand instead of salt on your driveway or just blow/shovel and use nothing at all to avoid wear. As far as edging, check into rubber possibly.
For the edging, I recommend retaining wall pavers. They are typically 4x8x12 and will hold up well and contrast the black asphalt really well. You could even get some smaller patio pavers in the same color to do a sidewalk to the front porch. That would add so much to look of your front yard. Throw a potted plant at the bottom step and boom!
I would be very curious to see a vid on your edged asphalt!
I can’t help ya with the driveway edge. But just wanna let ya know your lawn looks great. I’m in North Providence and am aware of the hot humid weather we are getting. We have had at least 3 official heat waves this summer and humidity is tough. Looks like you survived the summer.
That's a tough one I would maybe say pavers I wouldn't do anything metal cause when that warms up your grass will struggle there also maybe a idea but I would probably go with brick or pavers easy to change out if they get damaged.
Cool
I have lived in my current home in RI for 15 years. Had a concrete driveway when I bought it. Never had a problem. You need to find a good contractor.
Hmm good to know! Now you just made this harder for me 🤣
A sidewalk to your front door might be nice too (while you are getting the driveway done
Yeah it would
I live on Long Island, New York, and I've been gradually lowering my grass height to prepare for thatching and overseeding. It's tough trying to keep it green. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Stay cool, Tim!
@Moon Pie Sounds good. I've been dropping the height a little every few mows.. Thanks, Moon Pie.
I guess I don't know what you mean by straight edge when they poured my driveway it meets write up with my lawn I don't have anything in between also the more saw cuts you put in your concrete the more it will allow it to expand and contract
@Moon Pie he talks about what others have done to their driveway
I like the saw cutting idea on asphalt! I tried to find a paving company here in to use the permaloc.com/edging/asphaltedge/ here in Mich. It's a Mich. Co. but, not a lot of support from the paving operators. Thought about the paving block idea too. OCD'd on this quite a bit myself. LOL....
I often wondered if you sent a sticker about 7 months ago and it just never made it here...lol. Now I know😁
Haha as long as you put your full address 🤣
@@GrassDaddy I'm certain I did. If I don't see one in a week or so I'll try again
Belgium block edging
Block pavers
Pavers bro. Ask LCN about his - he loves it.
Yeah the only reason I'm against driveway pavers up here is the winters, frost heaves are a big problem. I'd have to find somone locally and see if theirs held up. And the cost..
Grass Daddy up here in Minnesota we just use a 6” layer of class 5 and it absorbs the heave pretty well. We have a paver patio underneath the deck and that thing hasn’t moved a centimeter in 3 years. RI should be comperable climate I would think 🤔
HEY Tim, I'm hoping my sticker was in that stack. Also, any chance the swardman is up for sale? I have my eye on the Allett but wouldn't mind striking a grass daddy special.
The Swardman has a new owner ;-)
I’d love a sticker but I’m in Canada...
Hold on a sec, what about other types of grass...say Bermuda. Does the principle of mowing it high also apply? What mowing height would you recommend for Bermuda when temperatures are on average >90 f
Warm season lawns can handle the heat much better which is why typically low cut lawns are a warm season lawn. So Bermuda you could reel cut it all summer and be OK. Just realize you can't chop it down low if you've had it high this whole time.
Grass Daddy thanks buddy
Yo!😎👊
That intro was interesting...
Cool
Why did the chicken cross the road? 😂
