    Sir, I am a Sri Lankan doing cambridge A levels. For like 1 and a half year I had no clue of what the hess's law is, i asked many teachers but i didnt still get it, just watched this video now and now hess's law is the most easiest lesson for me !!     To anyone who reads comments before deciding to watch a video... This doesn't have the nice computer animation and the dry erase marker is kind of hard to see and read but this is by far the best and easiest explanation I've found on how to solve these problems. And I have been doing some serious searching! Thanks for this, man!

    i just did my chemistry mock paper 1 and i just want to say a big thank you for your videos because even if i don't get high scores i actually didn't feel like i knew nothing on the paper and actually had a go at all the questions so thank you so much. hopefully ill be even more prepared for the actual exam in june

    11:49 when working out standard enthalpy of combustion, why do we have to against the arrows and not the other direction, with the arrows? (why couldn't it be -86-2734 = -2820 rather than 86+2734 as you do in the video). Is either way correct? Also thank you so much, this video is really helpful!

    Hi thank you so much for the video. I wanted to ask, does that mean even if they ask for the enthalpy of combustion or formation, you should just focus on the values given and use that to find enthalpy of reaction?

    Why does the sign switch when going against the arrow. Are you forming elements from your rectants. And if so is this done by a series of reactions or thermal combustion? Thanks for your help

    What do you do if a question gives both combustion and formation data
    e.g:
    Calculate the enthalpy of combustion of propanone, CH3COCH3(l), given the information below.
    ∆Hêc : H2(g) -286, C(s) -393 ∆Hêf : CH3COCH3(l) -217 kJ mol-1

    I'm doing a question and it gives both combustion and formation data values and asks you to calculate enthalpy change so which way would you draw the arrows down for combustion or up for formation? Many thanks

    I am confused about adding up part for the second solution as when I am adding up the numbers I am not getting zero the check if my calculation are right or not. When we have to check it by adding in all the numbers how would we know that which path to take to add them all up ? I hope so this question makes sense . Thank you .

    Hi just a question. In a practice questions it says H2 has an enthalpy change of -286 but in the example in the video F2 has no enthalpy. Aren't they both elements? Shouldn't H2 also have an enthalpy change of 0? Thanks a lot :)

      Yes. Newcastle supporters get used to inconsistency. They are a nightmare for the bookies. I have my real club - Morpeth Town FC - great football, only lost 1 game at home all season and won the rest! FA Vase holders too!! Nice to see a team that delivers time and time again!

    How come in the combustion cycle you said that the combustion change for CO2 is zero but you didn't mention the combustion change for H20. Is it because there is no water in the products? Hope you can help me!

    Hi sir, for the formation reaction why did we need to write out the elements if there weren't any enthalpy values stated for them? We just used the balanced equation to work out the enthalpy change, so I'm quite confused

      Yes hess cycle always includes elements in formation. The definition of enthalpy of formation states this specifically. You don't have to use the cycle and can opt for the equation as you mention.

    Question - at the end of the Combustion cycle explanation you flip the question around to see how you would calculate the enthalpy of combustion of glucose. the answer you get is +2820.. does one simply just change the sign because it is an exothermic reaction overall?

    sir it doesn't work the other way. when you go against the arrow, then you need to inverse the signs. So, +2734+86=2820, not -2820. I hope you reply to clarify this please
