A while ago we were promised a special on Universal Basic Income. Can we discuss economic policies like UBI, wealth tax (see Gary's Economics) etc? The main parties refuse to talk about anything of note economy-wise. So can we do it for them?
I worked out if they got rid of the DWP and the state pension, every person over 18 could receive £650 pcm. it's not far off £1k UBI! which is recommended. It's achievable, but i think we'd need rent controls.
does your calculation take the admin costs of DWP and pension into account? one of the oft forgotten benefits of the UBI of how the admin cost is so minimal, so there’s more money to go
into paying people.
Whilst I think a UBI could work, i really wish minimum income guarantee (MIG) was a policy discussed more often, as it gives all the benefits of UBI without as many risks to inflation.
@@rebekkahill4664 then you effectively have a 100% marginal tax rate. UBI can be combined with a flat rate of tax to basically remove all the nonsense in our current income tax system
I’ve just found the entire election night BBC coverage on RUclips from 1997. Amazing to watch it all moment by moment. Hopefully a repeat performance next month! It’s so interesting how then conservatives then constantly talk about out how disunity has been their downfall. No lessons learned it seems!

Both Corbyn and Abbott are serial troublemakers who displayed disloyalty towards Labour leaders for all of their careers.If you can't pick who you want in your party then there is no point being the party leader. The mainstream media is always seeking new angles to cover but this campaign cannot pivot on one or chronically unintelligent MPs when the future of the nation is at stake. Serious debate on the NHS and the economy is being stiffled in favour of someone found guilty of anti semitism. Does the British media want a Labour party free of antisemitism or does it prefer to indulge the failed Corbynista hacks.

Labour should let Dianne Abbot stand. People don’t want MORE party machine politics. They want LESS! More authenticity, more local accountability is what’s needed. Barring her also suggests the Labour leadership is so insecure that it can’t handle the odd voice of dissent inside the party. Shame on them.
These summaries of thoughts on how the election is going are great. I love to hear the thoughts and stories of past government ministers and figures of interest surrounding how what went on in the past, and in regards with who it went on with, fits in with the politics of today. It's such a good mix of history and personalities. Gives you that little insight into UK politics that we need, in order to get a sense of perspective, humour and insight into where we as the audience fit politically. Great podcast. Love it.

@@Sumonebody The issue is when inside the EU then charges inside the EU were gone. However, I think this gentleman was elsewhere. I was once on vacation in Africa when a young Australian accidently used their Aussie phone for data and ended up with AUD 2k bill. Thankfully, their provider waived the charges.

On Rory’s point on Wes Streeting and using spare capacity in the private sector to help the public waiting list in health, I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Queensland, Australia . I work full time public which is 4 days per week plus 1 in 6 on call and weekends. We have been using my day off per week for the last two years to perform surgery on public patients in the private sector and in two years we have cut my public waiting list from around 540 days to 250 days wait for a joint replacement. Still not where we were pre covid at 180 days approx but dramatically improved. This is a great idea and works well.
Lizz Truss is my MP too - if you want to get her out vote Labour.

Well questiontime will definitely be one to miss. I've never been a massive fan since they expanded the panel in the 90s/00s which always felt like there was too little time for each contributor. It was the game to get your soundbite out as there was little challenge or discourse.
Morgan and Farage? Battle of the egos to kick off their GE coverage. Hopefully they'll cancel each other out, but it seems unlikely.

If the agreement was for Diane Abbott to retire after having the whip restored, or even if there wasn't, why would anyone in Labour (unnamed source) say she wasn't allowed to stand, only for Starmer to deny it? None of it adds up. Sounds like someone is causing mischief to undermine Starmer's campaign.

It's definitely a stitch up job and it absolutely REEKS of sour grapes from Starmer's enemies. Starmer is the one blocking her candidacy. The disciplinary measures ended in December. She was only given back the whip if she didnt run again.
Yougov are the pollster with the best results and have Labour 27% ahead. The next most reliable one is IPSOS with a 21% lead. Vote Tactically, as LibDems are 2nd in 80 Tory seats

I’m in my mid 70’s the government / s over the last 8 years have been the worst in my lifetime by a vast margin.
But the 65 plus class is the cause of many of today's problems from egging on Thatcherite privatisation of utilities to constant demands for tax cuts at the expense of essential public services.The meonly# category is reaping the aftermath of collapsing medical services,bad train services and potholes. Milking the pension system with the triple lock is the ultimate slap in the face of the British nation.
I'm in my late 70s. Actually, standards have been declining since the early 1980s. Has been downhill all the way since then. Labour's brief interlude served only to place a restraint on the overall trajectory, which is the Road to Hell. Once Labour were ousted, the forces of negative evolution set in again with redoubled force. Fast forward to today…
There's only one question worth asking right now: how come the English are so stupid, so dozy, so completely addled and brainf***ed, that even now they are unable to perceive the broader direction of history? Yes, I do mean Rory and Alastair. A wonderful podcast, an addictive listen, much worthy comment and valuable content, an infallible guide on how to vote in the best lot this time round… as long as you don't look beyond the next 10 years… and as long as you still live spiritually within the invisible bounds of the present world-dominating Anglosphere.

I wonder when the BBC is going to finally let go of the nationally-unimportant Diane Abbott story and concentrate on the issues that the public care about?
Respect both of you. For me, I am done in terms of this election. I like countless many since Covid have watched my world begin to collapse. My rent has increased by 50% (£650 to £900), Electricity (£100), Council Tax, travel grocery shopping, child care of my granddaughter, and Water have also risen. It is now at the point, where despite my wife and daughter working along with me and doing good jobs, we cannot afford to live a life, with the essential bills taking all our salary. I have been made redundant, with me and the team having had our work go overseas to a cheaper location.
Both Kier and Rishi are the same as far as I am concern, with no real choice. I will probably vote Labour simply because Rishi is only concentrating on the elderly, but Kier is no better really and I know that this Labour will do nothing for people like myself and my family. This isn't a real democracy of choice. I anticipate it will be the lowest turnout in this election.
Fortunately I am not financially struggling, and I truly am upset by your struggles. I know I am one of the lucky ones, I don't take that for granted, and I know that a lot of the country is really struggling. And it frustrates me so much that Labour are basically copying Tory ideas, that it seems as if, since the tories have moved right, Labour have moved right too, to become the new centre right. So the traditional party who champions working people and works to improve their standard of living has abandoned us.
I unfortunetly have decided to use my vote as a protest and will be voting Green. It will probably make no difference, but I'm hoping for some luck where enough people reject Labour and vote for other parties that it forces them to re-analyse what they truly stand for.
Astonishing! I too followed your path, but here in Australia! Here, it is now said that our Labor governments have to be seen as Centre Right, the only true leftwing party we have left being the Greens.
The difference? We have proportional representation, and as a result, we've been able to elect significant numbers of both Greens and "Teal" Independents to our Parliaments. They have already made huge differences across a significant range of policy areas.
So the moral for you in the UK? Get rid of first-past-the-post and institute proportional representation plus compulsory voting. The latter will save you cartloads of wasted time and money trying to get out the vote. Our donkey vote is negligible in its effect by comparison with your non-voters. Who can best get you this change? Looks like Labour with LibDems snapping at their heels…?
I dont care about creed or people colour how they identify, shim, him, her, they, them, us or donkey, what we need is talent in politics and we seem to be lacking......

I loved the closing comments, it struck me as genuine affection between these two wonderful plonkers.
Just for context Rory, it wasn’t ’Irish Travellers’ that Diane referenced, it was ‘Jewish people’ ‘Irish people’ and ‘Travellers’ - terms matter. Her article said: ‘In pre-civil rights America, Irish people, Jewish people and Travellers were not required to sit at the back of the bus’ and ‘Racism takes many forms and it is completely undeniable that Jewish people have suffered its monstrous effects, as have Irish people, Travellers and many others.’
A slip of the tongue, I’m sure but, particularly, the terms ‘Irish’ and Traveller’ come with complex and multifaceted identities are not simply interchangeable.
We need some kind of standardisation for how politicians get their policy ideas and promises out during an election campaign. The fact that downright lies are still permitted to be circulated in a bid to trash the opposition is ridiculous at this point.
The tax burden is higher than it has been for 50 years. Nearly half of all govt spending is on the NHS. Nobody can be asking for higher tax to support for health.
Labour should take a quick and firm stance on Abbotgate and move on. Either she stays or goes I don't care. But quick and firm.
On National Service, I suspect the military don't want people who don't want to be there. One option to help with recruitment is to offer a tax incentive for those who serve 15 years with an honourable discharge. Say 1% off income tax for life for earnings below national mean wage. If would have to be fixed to a function of the national salary profile to prevent inflation devaluing it. That would encourage people to apply, allowing the military to select the best from those standing up.
The money that’s currently going into the NHS is astonishing and throwing more money at an organization that’s running more like its own fiefdom isn’t going to solve its horrendous self imposed problems .

What is self imposed? NhS waiting list in 2010 was 2.2m , pre covid 4.4m and now nearly 8m. Who’s been in charge during that period?

Rory, being ex military what's your opinion on the Tories desperate National Service policy?
RS had suggested policy of National Service when he was in parliamentarian, though disappointed it was being included by Sunak as a campaign strategy for election purposes (he explained reasoning in recent podcast). RS spoke on one of this week’s regular podcast or Q&A episode… heard on Apple podcast so unsure which one (episodes are coming thick and fast and meshing together (happy to have increased coverage and not complaining lol) - not all are uploaded to RUclips in timely manner unless live. 🤷🏻♀️

They've got a week till nominations close, and I think Labour's put a candidate in every constituency with a good few to spare. I don't even know if there's a way for a nominated candidate to withdraw! Mind you, she could always claim to be the Tory Candidate for the new Constituency I'm in, Southgate and Wood Green. The odd thing here is that Bambos Charoulambos is the Labour Candidate, and he's been suspended for even longer - and we're still none the wiser why.

On Kier and Dianne Abbot, I disagree with it being framed as people on the left of the party already being annoyed etc. For me it's about integrity and honesty. The narrative around the whole matter from Labour/Kier just doesn't really add up and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Whilst Scotland get more mo next if England got more money, the SG wouldn't necessarily spend it on the NHS. In percentage terms, SG spending g on NHS has been lagging behind En gland's for a few years (settlement with junior doctors included).

Definitely don't make pension tax emept. We need more taxes from rich people not working to enable us to cut taxes on those who are working to ensure work pays. Only effective way to grow the economy. Get rid of NI - put it on tax instead. No impact on those on low pensions. No impact on workers.
£12,570 tax free state pension doesn’t make anyone rich. If you’ve got a private or final-salary pension on top of this, it will still be taxed at 20%, 40% or 45% depending on how much the pension is worth.
@@___Rick___ Even full state pension doesn't hit 12 570. If someone is getting paid more than that without working each year - they should pay at LEAST as much tax as those who are working for that money and contributing to our economy. When they accumulated that money tax wasn't paid on it. It is only fair they do in the end if they are earning enough to enter thresholds.

The wedge issue of the moment is surely Dianna Abbot. For obvious reasons. The tories will say that NEC pulls the strings and the LP dances to there tune.

This election seems to be a perfect storm for independents to get in to Parliament.
The Labour leadership looks awful and out of touch with the people, especially on Gaza, and they're only slightly better than the Tories!
Instead, local candidates who are not identifying with either party are looking much more appealing.

The treatment of Dr. Faiza Shaheen is an absolute disgrace that you glossed over quite quickly.
Do not let Michael Gove join the Labour party. After all the damage he's done, everywhere he's been shoehorned in, any party that accepts his overtures is not to be trusted at all. Brazen leaving his gravy train so early, too.
Campbell is wrong about Farage, attempting to ignore, insult or belittle him is exactly how Brexit happened. You need to engage him seriously and dismantle his argument so he can't use the 'establishment' line.

Yes, and I watched that Farage speech on BBC, they cut him off before Reeves began hers. And whether it was 'inflammatory' or not, it wasn't for the BBC newsreader to give her opinion - newsreaders are there to read the news (duh) and link items.
I don't support Farage or the Reform Party, but didn't think it was inflammatory, nor did I agree with cutting him off. It would be dangerous to try to silence Farage, and the Reform Party, on democracy grounds.
Plus, migration is a very real issue, that many see as important. To dismiss a Farage speech that includes migration as 'inflammatory' is not the right way forward.

Can I make a suggestion for Rory? As this is a political podcast for, dare I say, political nerds, I would not think it necessary to interject every time Alastair is half way through a sentence to provide "context for listeners". I'm sure most people listening are aware of the Diane Abbott situation, and if they aren't I think Alastair saying "Diane Abbott becomes the story" might push them into finding out for themselves.
I know what you mean, but I kind of like his politics teacher tone as he runs through the details that you should know if you've done your homework, but there's probably someone at the back of the class that hasn't done the reading that was set.
Impossible to avoid the Diane Abbot thing if you watch Newsnight. They are so obsessed with it, you would think that there were no important policy or strategic issues in this election. I've stopped watching.

I'm 21, so maybe am just the target demographic, but I think if a Party didn't even try to operate in that space that would be a mark against them. It wouldn't be accepted for a major party to boycott TV or the newspapers, so why should modern social media be any different.
Inauthentic is something I can say about Starmer as well. I don’t always agree with Stewart but I know he is authentic. I love Alistair so I can’t be objective about him even though I will always disagree with him on Iraq.
