I think GCN and Lasty are very classy in treating this man with great respect, and for honouring the fact that he is doing this entire video in a second language. Possibly even a third. Big ups!
Interesting to see what an ex-pro's choice in equipment is now without sponsor obligations. Manufacturers have been pushing for disc brakes in all areas of cycling & to see Sven choose cantis over disc is interesting.
For me, this video really confirmed Tom Last as GCNs resident authority on cyclocross content. Definitely he needs Matt's old red chair for retro tech in the old GCN show red couch days!
Look at the difference between Sven and Lasty through the barriers at the end of this video. Note how Sven picks up his bike and the saddle is to the outside of his shoulder where Lasty picks it up and the saddle goes into his arm pit. This is an important difference especially for smaller riders. Your bike will not clear the barrier if the gap between your saddle and your armpit is less than the height of the barrier. Always pick your bike up like Sven with the saddle outside your shoulder.
brace your hip against the saddle as you move your hand from the hoods to the top tube. It's not mentioned, but you can see Sven do this. Otherwise, it's very hard to balance without both hands on the bars. Was having a hard time learning last night before i realized this.
The skill not covered here is make sure you can pick your feet up far enough over the hurdles after almost an hour at threshold - I discovered how hard this can be a few weeks ago and nearly sent myself cartwheeling! :)
4:14 When he remount, he use his inner thigh first and slide an inch or two to the right position. The process is so smooth that even himself didn't notice it.
I love the way they mount the barrier completely in step, on the same foot. Was that an accident or did you do several runs at it until you achieved the choreographed look?!
I like how he says "Click In" your pedals. It's got a nice ring to it. And I also thought he was going to Bunny Hop in the video but that didn't happen. :( Great video though.
Having started cyclocross this season this is helpful but carrying a bike on your shoulder when its as light as his is no problem but when its a heavier bike like mine its a bit different!
The problem with cross bikes such as Cannondale CaadX is that the top tube (standover height) is so high. So it only makes sense to mount it using too much acrobatics, like in the move Sven jumping over the saddle. I actually had to go a size down in CaadX size in order to have a standover height useable for both road and off road.
I'm just wandering that due to the terrain of the course you guys may need to get off & on at the right side of your bike. Do you do take this practice yourself or not? Thanks.
narutoqweavatar yes! We use good MTB shoes and cleats! They have great soles for short runs and lugs for good grip! I'm actually fond of Shimano SPD and believe me, I've tried them all.... enjoy!
ChristianXRdz2 channel they have. From two CX seasons ago if I'm not mistaken. But this time it is with Sven Nys! And also I am guessing that it is good for newer viewers who have not seen the previous videos....
Stéphane Jefe Müller you clearly have never cyclocrossed so please there's no point in the negativity. For some of us this was really helpful and coming from a legend in the sport just makes it more interesting.

Sven is great at this. he is articulate and explains in depth . good video
Xenophon54543 he hosts really good clinics as well if your around any major city before the season starts
I hope he becomes a regular
The skill by Sven is just poetry in motion to watch, a true and total campione 🙏 - this GCN is a classic ! 😘
"I'm not going to tell what your going to feel"; that about sums it up.
Russell Bainbridge LMAO! 👍
So true!
cool dat sven nys wereldwijd gaat! echt vet om hem hier te zien
Sven's explanation: Fairly understandable to good.
Sven's execution: Master class.
Time to toast some "mineral waters."
Interesting to see what an ex-pro's choice in equipment is now without sponsor obligations. Manufacturers have been pushing for disc brakes in all areas of cycling & to see Sven choose cantis over disc is interesting.
best "how to" by far! Sven nys legend!!
For me, this video really confirmed Tom Last as GCNs resident authority on cyclocross content. Definitely he needs Matt's old red chair for retro tech in the old GCN show red couch days!
Fantastic. Award Sven a Get-Off-And-On Bazooka. Matt could learn a lot from this, especially his remounting technique.
Sven is my hero💜 i am happy that i discovered this vid
Sven is a good teacher
Rather a long time since an interesting video was uploaded. Thx guys.
He teaches and cheers his son on. What better teacher to have than, Sven. Thanks for getting him on!
this is really cool, made me want to try cyclocross, thanks !
wow he's not only good at cyclocross, he's also a great teacher! very cool!
Yes!!! I'be been waiting for a video like this!

Trek specter jersey is awesome! I now feel like Sven.
The King of Cross speaks :-) thx@GCN for getting Sven onboard !!
Never thought I would be so mesmerised by slow motion footage of a man jumping on a bike saddle.............
The skill not covered here is make sure you can pick your feet up far enough over the hurdles after almost an hour at threshold - I discovered how hard this can be a few weeks ago and nearly sent myself cartwheeling! :)
3:20
6:50
amazing. so great that you got him guys. Lasty, what do you mean 'one' of the best cx'rs of all time??!!
The clipping in section was obviously included for Matts benefit.......the same can be said for the dismount of an obstacle! a log perhaps!
Great video Tom. Excellent job.
6:53 new Olympic sport: Synchronised Cyclocross
Sorry, guys, but the way Sven teaches is absolutely flawless. You actually feel glad after watching this. Sorry again, and thank you, guys.
Brilliant video! Makes me want to cyclocross!
Love it! More Sven! :) Thanks for the great video!
Great video. Thanks fellas.
one of your best video, super interesting
4:14 When he remount, he use his inner thigh first and slide an inch or two to the right position. The process is so smooth that even himself didn't notice it.
4:36 LOL! :) Put a smile on my face, great video Sven!
Very good explained !
Fantastic vid. Thanks!
Video of the year
I love the way they mount the barrier completely in step, on the same foot. Was that an accident or did you do several runs at it until you achieved the choreographed look?!
stustjohn it's Sven Nys. He can do that blindfolded.
Total masterclass
I just started racing CX and this is damn hard at anything but toddler-walking pace.
Sven Teaches how to train for balls of steel
That's what I worried about 4:30 technique, yeah my balls.
Matt! At 4.04, for stability, hold the top of the top of the bar first ...
sven is great now i know how to do I'm going to try
all of these are one of the most important parts apparently
Simple individual manoeuvres but, added-up together, could save you minutes in competition
I like how he says "Click In" your pedals. It's got a nice ring to it.
And I also thought he was going to Bunny Hop in the video but that didn't happen. :(
Great video though.
Sven........Excellent job
Having started cyclocross this season this is helpful but carrying a bike on your shoulder when its as light as his is no problem but when its a heavier bike like mine its a bit different!
I'm as slow as a turtle with my 20kg bike on my shoulder :D
More Sven please
GCN video of the year - How To Get Off And On Your Cyclocross Bike | CX Skills With Sven Nys
Lasty looks delighted to be with a legend of 'cross. #restingbrickface
Great video.
All i could think was about landing on my nuts but then he said it. xD

Can Matt clip in after getting off tho'
im worried if matt tried these stunts
hihi 'to see a video of CCN' 😃
Pretty useful for triathletes as well
Lasty was literally speechless 😂
YEAH, that's a cool video!!
Legend oh my god.
thats great and all but can we talk about the two absolute champs at 6:39 who jumped the obstacles without even dismounting?
So is being cross chained better for acceleration if the course demands it?
Is cross chaining a CX skill? A 'no-no' on the road but ok in the mud? :)
hi gcn, is it worth it to upgrade a low end front brake caliper to an ultegra?
Just compare colour of Lasty's and Sven's skin... Just like Geoffrey Soupe's Orbea Orca paint job!
Hi, is there a trick not to get stuck with my right leg when I get off my cyclocross bike? Do you think, that the saddle is too high?
This looks like Wisconsin. Is this in Wisconsin?
Legend
sweet 1X11 setup
master class
gold. thanks
Looks like Sven and Lasty were working on synchro-cross when going over those barriers together.
who's the GCN rider in the background at 6:17 ?
Did he say CCN? Cyclo Cross Network?? Count me in!
Well that's all well and good. And I'm sure it's quite useful in cyclocross. But it's no reverse pivot thingamajig that Matt showed us last week.
So which GCN presenter will get the sack to make room for Sven on the team?
CCN = Cyclocross Cycling Network
Guys, are you planning a new channel?
Really good, nice to have a bike a light weight. What about having heavy bike like mine almost 16kg. I'm just a poor guy can't afford much.
Do you even lift, bro ?
Yes bro, after I lifted I can feel the pain in my muscle. Heavy bike really not cool, so I'm trying my best to make it lighter. How about you?
I have a heavy bike with external routing under the top tube. Any ideas of how I could shoulder with out chopping up my shoulder/neck?
Wrap some hard foam around it loosely maybe. Like a piece of a yoga mat or something.
...the bike.. not your neck :D
thank god for the last reply totally saved me. :D
you could consider a shoulder support to, that goes down one arm and fastens across chest under other arm.
Cyclocross riders run a lot, are they wearing different shoes from regular road riders? I can't image running in my shoes.
narutoqweavatar they're like MTB shoes with SPDs on so much easier to run in
narutoqweavatar yes! We use good MTB shoes and cleats! They have great soles for short runs and lugs for good grip! I'm actually fond of Shimano SPD and believe me, I've tried them all.... enjoy!
Currently cyclists are learning the bunny hop!
Look where your pedals are positioned before hopping on so you can clip in quickly
i thought they already made a video like this
ChristianXRdz2 channel they have. From two CX seasons ago if I'm not mistaken. But this time it is with Sven Nys! And also I am guessing that it is good for newer viewers who have not seen the previous videos....
which gcn rider is that in the back???
ik ben van belgium
did he say at the end see a movie click CCN?
I got the dismounting but I'm still terrified of crushing my balls on the remounting. Tips?
narcolonarcolo experience. Patience. Practice makes perfect.
narcolonarcolo And yep, I think the remount is just sliding back into place, not actually jumping... Else you want to feel the 'nutcracker' of course.
This is what we call "Breaking it down Barney style."
Looking at his body fat percentage, I'm wondering: is Sven actually aware he's not a pro anymore? Mad respect!
Ahhh cool like he can jump on the bike... Thumb up! Great!! I try it next weekend... urgh...
Stéphane Jefe Müller you clearly have never cyclocrossed so please there's no point in the negativity. For some of us this was really helpful and coming from a legend in the sport just makes it more interesting.
RC 1986: 2x wrong. 1. I use my Crossbike often. 2. My coment was not negativ! I find, that Sven do it perfect. But english isn't my first language...
OMG! Why does Lasty look so miserable?! He's standing next to Sven Nys! How can he not be more excited?
I still cannot understand how road handlebars can better than flats for this kind of riding
Sven should should join the GCN presenters team
Crossed chains?
He runs way better than Chris Froome.
Why the hell the music is always so loud in videos?!
GCN please do something about this...
@Matt Stephens - skip straight to 5:00 minutes.
