How to Create and Edit Panel Borders in Clip Studio Paint

- Since I'm getting a LOT of questions about it, the Page system on the left is part of EX and isn't available on the Pro version of Clip Studio Paint. If you have EX, just tick to Multiple Pages checkbox on the New Page dialogue box when you have Comic at the top (by Use of Work). I you don't have EX, you can just save a Preset for your pages, so they're all consistent. Hopefully that helps!

Hey guys! I've put together this pretty thorough overview of how to create comic panel borders and edit them in Clip Studio Paint. In this video, I go over how to set up your page to use borders, create the initial panel border, divide panel borders equally and on your own, as well as using your own brushes to make panel borders.
Hopefully this is helpful! If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. Thanks!

Borders, done in 15 minutes, no nonsense. Love it! Subscribed
For those who have a newer version like me, the "work with other frame borders" under operation -> object doesn't exist. If you want to toggle the same thing, got to "keep gutters aligned" right above draw border.
thanks dude
Clipstudio is such a random clusterfuck
Dude, you're underrated *as hell*
Haha thanks! Hopefully I'll be overrated soon! ;)
A lot of people are asking about the Window with all the Pages on it on the left and "Work with Other Frame Borders"!
The window is part of the Story Mode in the "EX" Version of Clip Studio Paint. You get it by selecting Multiple Pages. If you have the "Pro" version, you can't do this, but you can simply save your template and use that template when you're making a new page.
Work with Other Frame Borders was changed to "Keep Gutters Aligned." Now you can change that to "None," "Horizontal and Adjacent" or "All." Gives you a few more options.
Hope that helps!
for 4:30 where can i find it in the current CS? and 11:44 to not mess with other frames
thank you
😂
Thank you so much for making this video! I have been using CSP-Pro for years and I've never figured out how to utilize the panel borders properly. You explained it very clearly and I'm finally using them the right way now. Thank you!
Awesome!
7:15 !!!! Thank you!!!! Have been looking for a while to turn off those darker purple borders around my smaller panels lol! Was really getting on my nerves. Thanks for the video. New subscriber :)
Awesome! Thanks! Glad it was helpful. Those borders can be so annoying! :)
Me too :)
Dude you saved my life, everything I wanted to watch about how to make panel borders is here. Thank you very much!
This is the most helpful video I have ever found on youtube and I'm not even exaggerating. New to digital comics? Save this to your favourties.
Thanks so much! Glad it helped! :D
Thanks! You had exactly what I was looking for with panels under/overlapping @11:50
Thank you! you're a life-savior dude! I'm really glad google recommended me your tutorial ^^
This is the perfect teaching style for me... clear, to-the-point, thorough. Thank you!

Man u saved my life I couldn't understand how to make panels i was going insane, this vid really helped! Thanks!
oh my god, is like having Indesing + Photoshop + Illustrator in one! I'm so excited to use this software!
Equal panel borders at 5:55 was an awesome tip. (and of course the page set up at 2:15 )
Thank you!! After years I have been able to find someone explaining this! I was always hand-drawing my panels since the vector lines look a little off putting with my textured ink brush and I had to hand-draw every single line!
No worries! Glad it helped! :)
You're the first link to come up when I searched for info on how to use comic frames, and you just blew my whole mind. Thank you for this *O*
Awesome! Glad to hear the video is so highly ranked and that it was helpful. :)
Thanks for this helpful video! Your video have saved my life from this program
useful video thank you!
Scott you're the man. Without this video I would be lost on how to set up my panels. Thanks!
Haha awesome! And thank you for watching! :)
This was SO HELPFUL. I have used Photoshop for years & I am giving CSP a try for the first time. Thank your for helping me along!
No worries! Happy to help! :)
@@ScottD 🤘🤘
Awesome. My butt is gonna have to re-watch this a few times for it to set in - but thank you!
Cool. Very nice explanation.
You are my new hero! I've been making zines by hand for many years and bought Clip Studio two years ago but got so frustrated trying to learn it that I gave up. You've inspired me to give it another go. I'm going to attach a second monitor so I can try this again and follow along with your instructions. Great work and keep it up. Hugs and kisses. ***Happy Dance***
Awesome, Laurie! Good luck and hit me up if you have any questions! :)
Super helpful, thanks!
Super useful. Thank you so much
Thanks man. Finally making the switch to Clip Studio after owning it for years. Should make comics easier as soon as I get a grasp on it. Great video.
Awesome! Yeah, it takes a bit to get used to it, but it's totally worth it, IMHO. And thanks so much! :)
A video explaining everything in the operations & move layer features in CS would be awesome! I can find any videos that go in depth.
& Auto-actions 😅
Thank you! omg this helped so much! you have no idea!
Dude, you're underrated as hell Pt2: The ass-saver
This is a really useful tutorial, thank you so much!
Great! I'm glad it helped! :)
thank you! I'm still learning and this is very helpful!
Simply.... Thank You Thank You Thank You.... Thank You.

Great vid, great help man. You give an excellent place to start, thank you!
Nice video buddy, think I need to upgrade to EX
Thanks for the tips. I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you. This is a better tutorial than the official one that's for sure.
Ha! Thanks! :D
Thx for this man!
Thank you for your tips, it's very helpful :)
No prob! Glad it helped! :)
This is sooooo helpful. I really appreciate this tutorial. Thank you so much!
Good! Glad it helped! :)
RUclips seems to have eaten your question that I just got (or I can't seem to find it), but whether you can change away from mm to inches depends on the "Use of Work" you select for some reason. "Illustration" and "Show All Comic Settings" should let you switch from mm.
@@ScottD Ah, I figured it out and didn't want to fill the comments with cruft, so I deleted it. THANK YOU for being so helpful.
thanks so much! This was really helpful
Dude you are my God. Realy helpful video thank you

dude, this is really helpful! thanks XD
I’m learning this when I should be on my online classes😂😂
Though imma need a lot more help- my clip studio doesn’t have all the same things for some reason but also this is my first time using the comic part soooo yeahhh
Ha! At least you're learning something! :)
I'm using the EX version, which has some upgraded features. Let me know if there's anything specific you want to learn about!
Scott Drummond oof I have small brain sometimes 😂😂 I have EX too but I think there’s just little differences, yours has more options for some reason but other than that I got most of it figured out!! I’m starting a little comic right now and it’s pretty dandy 👀
Thank you so much!!
Thank You!❤
That was cool! I was clapping at the end. :)
Thanks for your video :)
Very helpful, thank you
you're the best! thank you!
Holy cow! This was informative! Thank you!

@@ScottD Do you have a video on what to do with your comic once you have finished it in CSP? How to export it for printing?
@@Komikino Kind of! ruclips.net/video/gETRi346Nmk/видео.html
I use InDesign to set everything up for print. I export all my pages as flattened PSD (from Photoshop, since I color there), then import into InDesign, like you see in the video, with some extra stuff along the way, like adding page numbers, etc.
If you just want to go from CSP to the Printer, I don't have a video on that, unfortunately. But that's a good topic that I should totally cover in the future! :)
@@ScottD I used your video last night to figure out how to set up my pages for US comic style. Then continued watching for panel layout and how to set those up. Really helpful stuff! Thanks!
@@Komikino Awesome! So happy it helped!
😍
Thank you so much
Best tutorial. Thanks for that
Love the demo. So let's say I create all the frames and want to save the layout so I can use it on other pages. Do you have a video for that?
Great tip! Thanks for the video.
great video! so useful :)
great thanks !
majorly helped me understand how to craft my own oanels, WAY easier than doing all of this manually
SO much easier! :)
thankyou so much
This is the best tutorial on panel borders. Thank you! I am using Clip Studio Paint along with a Wacom Cintiq 22. Is it possible for you to create a tutorial on how to maintain or restore pressure sensitivity? On a regular basis, it's lost and I have to adjust so many things including the brush size. Because of this my drawings are not consistent.
Thanks so much! I'm glad it was helpful!
And that's really weird about the pressure sensitivity. Does it only change after you close Clip? Or when switching tools?
@@ScottD This changes after I close the Clip Studio!
One of the most important and hard to find things is how to change the space BETWEEN frames. I hope that answer is in this video because I’ve been all over the place looking for the answer with no luck.
I talk about that at 3:48.
HOWEVER, once you cut the borders, you cannot change the width between them, so make sure you have it right before you move on.
@@ScottD Right. But I’m trying to figure out how to adjust them afterwards. Currently, I’ve had to move them manually.
@@bamm86 Yep, you can't. That functionality isn't built into the system. Sorry!
@@ScottD Oh dang! That’s crazy! Oh well. That’s good to know. That way, I won’t spend almost 2 hours looking for that solution in the future. I’ll just set up my template from the start. Thank you!
Great video, but it seems it could use an update, as many of these options are changed or straight up missing. Default inner border size is now missing, and you can't use inches for some page types, only mm. I have CSP EX
thank you!!!!
THANK YOU!!!🙏🙏🙏
No worries!
This is a great tutorial, thank you for helping me understand the panel borders, I was really confused for a while. A question though - when setting out a page with these dimensions, around what size should I be making my text (for talking in speech bubbles)
I don't usually letter in CSP, but I usually letter in 6.5 pt font in Photoshop at this size, if that's helpful. I think it also depends on the font. You might want to print out a few different sizes and see what looks right on a page, or compare it to a comic page you're trying to emulate.
Great tutorial! Is there a way to create an exact frame dimension? For example, if I wanted a 2-inch by 2-inch frame/panel?
Can u do one video like this for a setting to those who want to do traditional manga
Thank you so so much for this!!!
No worries! Glad it was helpful!
Also, I saw your earlier comment (that you may have deleted?) and wanted to let you know you can show/hide your crop marks by going to View > Crop Mark/Default Border. If, instead, you're wanting to hide the crop marks when exporting, make sure to have the Crop Marks box unticked under Output Image in your Export Settings when you're exporting. Hope that helps! :)
@@ScottD Thank you! I figured that I can also just change the whole canvas size to what I want it to afterwards
. Thanks a lot, I am looking through all your vids right now, they are super helpful, keep up the great work!!
@@tatjanakorolyuk2094 Oh wait, I think I misunderstood your question! Do you want CSP to crop your image down to the Crop Marks before Exporting? Because it won't do that automatically, unfortunately. You'll have to go to Edit > Canvas Properties and change your Bleed Width to "0" and make your Canvas Width and Height the same as your Binding Width and Height. Then, you can export and should be good.
Scott Drummond thanks a lot, you are very kind :)
@@tatjanakorolyuk2094 haha no worries! Happy to help! :)
My "Work with another frame border" tick box isn't there. Is there a function which disables this that I can turn back on? Besides that, appreciate the informative video.
Solitary If the tick box isn’t there, try hitting the wrench at the bottom of that palette. I think it may be in there. Then you can tap the eyeball next it to and it’ll show up in the palette, I think.
@@ScottD It's not there entirely. All the lines just overlap instead of the actual boxes overlapping.
Okay, I have Clip open in front of me now. It looks like they may have renamed it to "Snap to other frame borders". You'll also need to have "Keep Gutters Aligned" moved to "All" if you want it to work with both horizontal and vertical gutters. Hope that helps!
Scott Drummond I thought so too, but it just pushes the boxes up/down. This some ol’ bull
@@solitary2 Hmmmm... Make sure you have just one point or side selected. It might be selecting more than one side or point when you click, which would move the whole thing. What a pain!
Hi Scott -- fantastic tutorial, thank you so much! Let's say I have a page where I had the "draw border" checked and I wanted to go back and do your "hand-drawn" method. Is there an easy way to uno the drawn borders? Thanks again for these wonderful videos. They are so helpful to me!
Hey there, got any tips for if a character overlaps the panel border? Do you have to do it on a higher layer, or can you expand the panel mask (doesn't seem to work for me!)
I’ll usually put those layers above the panel border and then have a white layer in between the inks and panel border to mask off the border. There may be a way to mask the border, but this seems simplest for me, especially since I flatten all my inks before I color. I actually have a video posting tomorrow that shows exactly what you’re talking about, so sub or check back to check it out. :)
@@ScottD I'll do that, thanks, the more tips the bettah! I was hoping the panel masks themselves could be editted, it would save on layer clutter up-stream. Alas!
Yeah, since the panels are basically makes themselves, it doesn't look like it. You could put the panel border folder inside a group, then put a mask on that group, but that might be more trouble than it's worth.
So this is American standard comic settings correct? If so thank you so much!!! I made my first comic and went to get it printed just at office max thinking it was correct size and wasn't so I'm looking to try these dimensions. I hope they are American standard. 🙌🙌🙌
I can't see where the cursor is pressed when you move the cursor. I can't see because it's so small
i cant figure out how to draw on the borders like you did, even tho i have snap to special ruler on
thank you SOOO much!!
No worries! Glad it helped!
Thank you for this useful video! I would like to know how to draw over the top of frame border? 🤷♀️ I want my character to jump out of the frame. Could you help me please?
Sure! There's a couple ways you can do that. You can either 1) put the Frame Border folder into ANOTHER folder, then use a mask on the new folder to block out the border, or 2) make a new layer above the Frame Border folder, and paint in white above the border. In both of those instances, you have to put the character jumping out of the frame on a layer above all of that. Unfortunately, there's no native way to add an additional mask to the Frame Border folder to cut it off. I talk about it a little bit in this video: ruclips.net/video/2WnpN6Nxx_c/видео.html
Hope that helps!
Scott Drummond Thank you so much!
What about if you wanted characters breaking the frame?
Is there anyway to control where the frame folders are created in the layer stack? I don't wan to keep dragging them down from the top every time
Work with another frame border, is missing. I assume that it is missing in newer versions?
The frame border is interfering with trying to draw lines in a panel. In the particular panel I'm trying to do, it won't allow me to add layers. I'm thinking of just deleting the frikkin page and redoing it.
Hi! Thanks for the helpful tutorial, I've been intimidated away from using the frame tool in CSP but this helped break it down well. I had a question I was curious if you could answer: I'm currently using CSP on a drawing tablet (ipad), so I don't have a shift key to use for snapping the frame divisions at those 90/45 degree angles. Is there any other way I could make those clean frame divisions?
Yep! You can check the "Step of Angle" box in the Tool Properties panel and set it to 45, so it'll snap to 45/90/etc.
Also, if you swipe in from the side of the screen on the iPad, you get a secret CSP menu with the Shift/Alt/Ctrl buttons, plus some extra hot keys that are programmable.
Same question but for android
can you do an update? the interface has changed since 2 years ago.
Thank you very much for such a helpful video!
I'm still having a problem though - I'm trying to merge two panels.
My frames are in the same frame border folder, I can select both of them holding shift and everything else seems to be okay - except that nothing happens after I click on Ruler - Frame -> "combine frames".
Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?
hii! i hope i’m not late and hoping for your response, but i use clip studio pro and whenever i use the panels, the lines are color blue! even though i picked for a color black, please help :(
Yo, this is a weird one! The only way I found to change the panel color is to make the panel, then select it using the Operation > Object Tool and changing the Main Color in the Tool Properties Panel. So, that means a couple things might be happening: You might be using a blue Material for your Brush Tip, which would make the Border that blue color. OR you might have it in a folder that has the "Layer Color" Effect accidentally turned on in the Layer Property panel. Hopefully this helps! Let me know! :)
Any ideas about curved or round borders?
Yep! So, if you click on the wrench on the Subtool Detail panel for the Rectangle Frame, under Figure on the left, there's a checkbox for "Roundness of Corner." You also need to switch the type under "How to Specify" from "Specified Ratio" to "Specify Length" to make them consistent. Otherwise, the roundness of the corner will depend on how big the panel is, not a specified pixel dimension.
Also, it will totally forget that you want to have round panels if you use the Cut Frame tool, so you may want to make one that is squared off first, then use that as a guide for making individual panels with round corners. Not a perfect solution, unfortunately. Hopefully CSP adds that functionality in the future.
FINALLY! I've looked around for a year on how to do round panels! Thanks! @@ScottD
Great! Glad it worked out for ya!
