- Let’s try some Brisket on the Kamado Joe / Kettle Joe! Nice Brisket! Allot of Effort…..
Here’s the original review of The Kettle Joe….. • Kamado Joe / Kettle Jo...
I think the briquettes exasperated your issues. I did an overnight with charcoal and was able to get 8-10 hours in winter temps before needing to add fuel and I didn’t need to empty a full ash pan
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the feedback
Was looking for a winter cooker and looked at the Kettle Joe and Akorn and picked the Akorn. So glad I did that. Cooked some ribs on the Akorn in 26 degrees Chicago weather and that thing held temps like a champ and had charcoal left over. Seeing the KJ struggle in the cold makes me even more glad with my decision. Great video, thanks Tom!
Thanks for watching Troy! You made the right choice
If I live in warm weather so cold is not an issue and want to upgrade my grill which one of this two you recommend the Akorn or the Kettle Joe. Liked the more accessories availability of the kettle as fits same as for the webber
Thanks for Watching! Ok, The Akorn is more of a Kamado. The Kettle Joe is more of a 22” kettle with the smoke roller. You need to ask yourself which you are looking for, a Kamado or a Kettle. That’s your answer
Lump doesn't produce as much ash as briquettes produce. I was planning on getting one of those but I'll stick with my kamados. They work great. Happy New Year Tom!
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback
How would you rate the value if prices were significantly different? Here in the UK Kettle Joes are going for sub 300 dollars ath the moment vs over 500 for the Akorn
Thanks for watching Andy! The Kamado still performs better regardless of the price
Nice review. Thanks for your honest review of the kettle Jo. Maybe once they get down to $250 I would consider one. Thankfully our brisket prices haven’t spiked that much here.
Thanks for Watching Louis! $250.00 would be a fair price
I cook on hardwood lump and haven't struggled with the Ash box filling up, great video but feel the Kettle Joe is better than you are saying in my experience
Thanks for watching! Appreciate the help!
At first I stated that I was using the Meatstick, we really used the MEATER
Well, I think that with any new cooker there is a learning curve. Ironically, SmokingdadBBQ cooked one his best briskets ever on the Kettle Joe. If I could make a few suggestions, like others have said, I would try it with lump. If you have to add coal mid-cook, ideally you would put the new coal on the bottom. Of course, this is a PITA scooping it out into a chimney or something and then re-adding it on top of the new coal. I wouldn't do it either, but I would try to stir the coals together bringing the hot coals to the top as much as possible. By layering that insulating blanket of cold coals on top of the hot ones I'll bet you added 2 hours to your cook. (With fan control of the fire it may not matter.) With my Joe Jr. kamado, I've found that brisket cooks much better at around 240-250F, especially if the piece of meat is small or lean. An added benefit is that you finish your cook faster too. Try again before you give up on this grill. Thanks for filming in those freezing temps!
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback!
Thanks for braving the elements to cook for us. Not surprised that the Kettle Joe had temp problems in cold weathering, but surprised to see it was caused by air flow. I guess lump charcoal might help, but I'm looking for a redesigned grill for 2022. They blew out the in-stock units in the fall, so the warehouses are ready for the new stock. Happy New Year!
Thanks for Watching Don! Appreciate the feedback… I doubt that I would get the re-designed one,,, but time will tell
Happy New year! I have really enjoyed my Even Embers
Pellet Fueled Ceramic Egg with Bluetooth. It's a little pricey but well built. Maybe you can get your hands on one one day? I think it would be a great collection of the land of grills. Tractor supply is the best price on it.
Thanks for Watching Christopher! I’ll check it out! Thanks for the tip!
It sure looks like a nice grill, but I wouldn’t trade in my Smokey mountain for one! Happy New Year Tom!
Thanks for Watching Bill! I agree! Happy New Year!
Maybe one day Tom will buy a Smokey mountain 🙂
Lol! It is on the list…. Thanks for Watching!
Yes the WSM is a great smoker!
Love my Wsm..nothing better than hanging ribs in that sucker!
Yea.. briquettes are never the best solution in a kamado. A temp control system makes it a non-issue but when aspirating naturally, there is nothing but problems associated with briquettes in a charcoal grill. Where the kettle Joe is much unlike a weber kettle is its shape. The weber has a wider and flatter charcoal grate where airflow is not inhibited by the ash buildup. Kamados are really designed with the use of lump coal in mind.
Wow! I appreciate the feedback! I’ll disagree on this being a Kamado… it is not. Thanks for Watching I appreciate the feedback.
I do love the Kamado Joe. Happy New Years Tom!
Thanks for Watching Tommy!
If you cooked more on it you would learn how to better run it. Of course with 1/3 of your coal burnt up stirring them will make all the ash fall thru the grate into the tray. Making it looked like it clogged on its own. You did this. I would suggest if you thought this was all clogged up blocking the lower vent to check it every few hours and just simply push the ash away from the vent.
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback
Nice review Tom lovely smoke ring in that brisket 👌👌
Thanks for Watching!, lots of effort went into that smoke ring.. Wow!
Glad I only paid $300 for my Kettle Joe, but seriously disappointing results. It's so good to see an honest bad review of a product most people swoon over. I haven't made brisket in it yet but now I know what to watch for. Thanks!
Thanks for Watching! I was one of the people who had to have it,,,$600.00…wish I hadn’t
Interesting review Tom. I hated my Chargriller Akorn, so you recommending it over this is disappointing. I still love the look and options. I won't buy a new one, but will snag the first cheapo used one I find, and give it a good test drive.
Thanks for Watching Dave! The Akorn is 10 times better than the Kettle Joe! Save your money…
Great video Tom! And your opinion is what we to hear! Thumbs 👍
Thanks for Watching Jim! Appreciate the feedback!
Hi Tom I took the bottom tray out and put in a kick ash basket and no problem with it i use the rotisserie from Cajun bandit and that works well on it also
Thanks for Watching Wayne! Appreciate the feedback… How did the work? Even with the ash tray out the ash will fall into the slot that the ash fits and cause it hamper air flow….???
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ the ash catcher works well because you can take the ash out and not inhibit the air flow the kettle works well whether its weber or kamado
So it still gets plugged up on the ash tray area? Maybe you took out the the ash tray and the angled piece that directs the ash to the ash drawer? If that’s the case then I can see that possibly working… Yes? Appreciate the feedback
Ooooh man, that is a great smoke ring. Honestly think that’s not designed for 23 degree weather unless your cooking at much higher temps. Just wondered what marinade you used. The price of brisket is crazy. I know you’re a bit disappointed in the results but that’s part of the experience. Thanks for sharing Tom! Cheers!
Thanks for Watching Jay!
I sure wish my local Ace Hardware in central WI would carry B&B charcoal & pellets. Tried to ship to my local store and it’s not available. Will keep trying to find somewhere close to home.
Thanks for Watching Lisa! Happy New Year!
I just got my Kettle Joe and I'm returning it. Did my first cook (pork butt) yesterday in 35 degree Chicago weather. I used a full basket of Fogo premium lump (the black bag). I wrapped it at 165 4.5 hours in and my full basket was gone! Very disappointing. First time using lump. My grill temp was averaging 250 the whole time. My cons are no where to put the slow roller if you want to remove it, the ash tray is definitely a bad design like you said and for the exact reason you said. I had to empty it like 3 times to keep the airflow good. I'm going to get the Oklahoma Joe's Judge Grill to replace it! Solid grill, not a lot of moving parts or gimmicks and you can grill on it and do low and slow no problem. Plus fire mgmt will be easy on it too. I can go in through the door on the front or even on top removing a grate or two because the grill is so big. 18"X30". If you get your hands on one, I'd love to see you review it Tom.
Thanks for Watching Julian! Appreciate the feedback! I’ll look into the Oklahoma Joe’s grill, thanks for the tip
Glad I watched this. Appreciate the unbiased and honest review. I would’ve been really disappointed to pay $400 for this. Even a standard Weber kettle seems better. That ash blocking the air intake is unacceptable and then you might have hot coals/ash to deal with if emptying mid-cook. I’m interested in the Akorn.
Thanks for Watching! The Akorn is the way to go
I have nothing bad to say about the Akorn. I've done everything from burgers, steaks, tuna, salmon, pork ribs and butts, briskets, and today, beef ribs!
Just make sure you get a heat shield for indirect low heat cooks (I use a charcoal grate from a Weber kettle with a pizza stone sitting on it).
Thanks for the tips! Thank you for watching!
Mr Horsman,
What is the best kamado in your opinion? Any info would be helpful. Thank you
Thanks for Watching Greg! For the money the Char Griller Akorn is the best at $300.00. If money is no option then the Red And The Green will work
If money is really not a issue:
Komodo Kamado are the best. They are $3K to 10k depending on size. And worth the money if you can swing it.
Most folks I know try to make their Weber more like a kamado, not the other way around! Still, I like the concept of this pit. Probably requires more charcoal in cold weather than you originally loaded...maybe the fuel addition mid-cook affected the pull? More rest required? Thanks for the honest review as always!
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback! Thank you
Thanks for another great video. Ceramic in the dome I get, but I don't know what KJ thinks the benefit of ceramic in the bottom is. To me it just takes up space where more charcoal could be. I have a Joe Jr. and love it but this rig doesn't make sense compared to the other kettles you have in the Land of Grills, especially the SnS.
Thanks for Watching! Appreciate the feedback! I agree!
User error! Someone using briquette charcoal in a Kamado style grill doesn’t understand the grill. Stick to webers if you don’t understand.
Thanks for Watching! It’s not a Kamado,,, or a Kamado style grill. I had used lump with Similar results.
The single-walled steel is the problem. Not very efficient. My Weber Summit Charcoal is double-walled insulated, and holds rock-solid in any weather while burning little charcoal.
Thanks for Watching Kevin! That is part of the issue…
Great video 🍻. I purchased my Kettle Joe for $399 and of course went on sale for $299 shortly after lol. I don’t think I would of paid anymore than that but with that being said I absolutely love it. Seen a lot of reviews on it showing gaps and leaks I don’t have that problem with mine. I don’t know if it’s because I tighten up all pre assembled parts (hinges, handle band ect. ) I did have ash issues with brickets vs lump but the basket has too much gap for standard lump it seems it falls into tray before it even lit. Have you tried big block from KJ ?
Thanks for Watching Lawrence! I did put a gasket on the lid and it surprisingly tight. Have not tried the bigger lump
Have to use lump
Thanks for Watching
My ash tray got some super hot coals on it and melted. I took it out..it isn't needed and does fine without it. Also it's just as easy to clean
Thanks for Watching Geoff! I was thinking of doing that..it’s too bad that the entire ash can wasn’t removable, that would make it much easier to empty the ash
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ true but it isn't bad with the pan out. I just brush the ash from inside to the middle then scoop it out
I will give that a try! Thanks again for Watching and commenting!
It’s going to be 23 degrees in Plano, TX on Sunday. I’m planning a 12 lb brisket to smoke. I can’t choose between the MB 560 or my Primo XL. What’s your thoughts on what I should cook in?
Thanks for Watching Thomas! I think they both would perform well…. If I were to choose I’d take the MB 560, just because it can adjust better to weather conditions
Easy mode 560 so darn convenient.
Agreed!
Tom do you have an ultimate grill for cooking and good flavor? What are your thoughts? Have you tried a Pk360?
Thanks for Watching Geoff! I have the PK but not the 360, I get the question all the time,,, it’s really hard to answer. If it’s the one grill that can low and slow and hot fast using charcoal and have a ton of capacity and be easy to use…. The Char-Griller 980 in my opinion is awesome. the MB 1080 does well also…
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ haha..so glad you said that! Just finished putting my 980 together new years day!
Congrats on the new grill Geoff!
Lol if you have used a kamado joe before you would know not to use briquettes because of all the ash they create and potentially suffocating your fire. Kamado joe uses same ash tray in the kamado and kettle joe. 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for Watching!
As always..... Weber kettle Tom
Thanks for Watching Tom!
The only thing i dont like about the kettle joe is how dirty it looks after each cook.
but that´s what you get with a red BBQ... still not sure if i gonne get this one or not...
Thanks for Watching! You are correct, it does get quite dirty and the ash is a pain to clean out
Long story short, but a Weber, add fire bricks, pocket 500 dollars
Thanks for Watching!
Does anyone think that the fat cap on the bottom had anything to do with the result? So this is what the meat industry is doing to ease the pain of the Administration, half flats? About a month ago I found a prime brisket at Costco for less than $10lb. As always Tom, love the video. Surprised at your disappointment
Thanks for Watching Paul! Disappointed in the Grill,, The Brisket was great, but yes, meat prices are insane!
If you look-see you don't cook-see 😂
That look-see like that Kamado is a lot of work! I'll stick to my weber kettle and the snake 🐍 method with my vents about wide open to ensure I got a clean fire and delicious smoke. Here's a tip chew with your mouth closed on camera 🥸
Thanks for Watching Dennis! Appreciate the feedback
I'd rather have Weber 26 than kj or chargriller. My beef with chargriller is they only last 3-5 years, being stored in garage you might get longer. Mine rusted out and bottom fell out. Replacement part was nearly what I paid for the grill
Thanks for Watching Adam! Appreciate the feedback! Happy New Year!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I had been eyeing up KJ but I think if I get another 22 inch grill will be either sns or fancy Weber with hinged lid.
They both work well Adam!
Tom, that kettle joe is a neat idea but needs some improvements I will not buy one for sure!
Thanks for Watching Robert! I agree…
La ooks good Tom
Thanks for Watching Ray!
The standard coal to use in this type of grill is lump. For this very reason. Briquettes cause to much ask and clog up the system. Nice video but wrong coal bro
Thanks for Watching Dan! I’ve had similar results with both. The owners manual refers to both as being acceptable.
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ you da man bro
Kettle Joe 👎
Thanks for Watching John!
I’m not a fan of this grill. It’s a kettle with ceramic blocks that serve zero purpose. The fire can’t breath too well either. 4 hours is nothing for a long cook. Gadgets to sell is what it is.
Even in Ca where I live this thing won’t cut it. If I had one-I’d get rid of it & buy a real Kamado
Nice cook in any case. And yes brisket is $$$$ these days. I paid $115 for a flat for Christmas.
Happy New Year!
Thanks for Watching Eric! Appreciate the feedback! Brisket is crazy expensive!
