When I first heard this song, I looked in the backseat at my daughter (16 months old at the time) she was staring out the window with the sun shining on her face. She was smiling at the trees passing by as she stared with her big blue eyes. Just as I saw her, I heard “blue as cut sapphires shining like gold.” I always think of her when I hear it and it makes me smile. Your music brings joy into our lives, and Is the only acceptable music for our land voyages.
What a beautiful story! Their music is literally the only music I play in the car (except the other day, when Billy Joel came on, but really, Billy Joel!). It's basically the only music I ever play, ever. Yay autistic obsessions!
This was fantastic! So cool to see all the places the Johns definitely visited. Well done, everyone involved! And someone give Abbie a medal for putting it all together and working a lot of video magic in some places! Now I have to show it to my parents. (darnit, misspelled Abbie.. hooray for edit buttons)
Andy, JD, Dave and Robbie: If by any chance at all you read this, I want to say a big thankyou. Your music helped me through some really unpleasant times, and I personally consider you to be some of the greatest most genuine musicians of our current era. Your show in Bristol May ish 2022 was the highlight of that year for me. I was stood at the front of the queue for the bar across the road as Andy walked past me. My friend pointed him out and I froze and didn't take the chance to tell you what I would want to: "Hard Times" was the first song of yours I heard (after Wellerman, I'm sure haha), and following my love affair with The Dreadnoughts and Billy Strings I instantly connected with your music. That song really helped me through a tough time, and thereafter I listened to your discography and was just enthralled. You speak to a feeling that most native brits identify with; the songs you sing are the folk songs of our people. Britannia ruled the waves for a long time, and those lyrics of loneliness yet camaraderie, bitter yet sweet.... they speak to our core. I wish I'd had the presence of mind (I was pretty shitfaced; after all - Beer is Great) to say this to Andy when my friend said "that's the guy from the band"... I actually saw Antonio later in the night and gave some drunken praise to him: "your songs helped me through some rough times; just wanted to shake your hand and say thanks". Now I know Antonio isn't quite what you'd consider one of the true band members, I still had to say it; tbf he put on almost the most entertaining performance on stage during the show. He and your drunmer are an awesome rhythm section. Anyway. Love you guys. Appreciate your music more than I can express. Hope to see you live again soon (come to the North West pls). And Adequate Musician fan.
I'm glad it was able to help you, and I hope you're in a better place now! To be honest, I practically consider Antonio and Rich to be part of the group now anyway. I'm sure if I'd been there and seen him, I'd have gushed like a loon anyway. Oh please, oh please come to Australia! But you have to come to Perth too! why is WA so far away from *everything*?
Whoever has made the whole Moby Duck Sanctuary for this video: you're my hero and I love you. As for the whole thing, it was so heartwarming and adorable! Superb work as usual, from the Johns, Abbie (I aspire to edit like you one day) and the community
