Is it time to ditch watercolours?

  • I guess technically I've already ditched the watercolours, so the real question is Should I go back to them? In this video I dig out my favourite--but neglected--watercolour palette again and paint a very messy and fairly unsuccessful dolphin to see how I feel about the materials I used to love so much.
The paints used are a combination of Daler Rowney Artist's Watercolour and Daniel Smith Watercolour on Langton Hot Pressed paper.

This is an interesting view on digital/analogue. I've struggled feeling like I'm not a real artist since I've only worked digitally in computer 3d animation. Then, I went onto "learning how to draw" again in Procreate. It gave me such joy, it felt like playing again. I do suffer from headaches from too much screentime, so I've thought of going to gouache, a medium I dabbled with years ago. I've been putting it off for weeks in shear terror. Thank you for your insights, and it makes me feel like my digital artwork process isn't so undervalued.

If you create, you're an artist! Don't be scared to try something. Have fun with it, make a mess, make ugly art that you don't want anyone to see. I experiment with all kinds of materials but most of them are hidden away in my sketchbook, just for me.
