Recipe is good but the word khichadi is a misnomer. Khichadi is always a mushy dish ( it is a porridge ). You could call it as semiya tomato upma / semiya tomato pulao / tomato shavige Bhaat( as we call it in Bangalore ) or just tomato Sevai .

You can but I would recommend you lightly roast it once before using it
