I served on an LHA the Bellawood 3. Not quite as big as an aircraft carrier, but still carry choppers and harrier jump jets. It was incredible to live aboard one of these vessels.

Doesn't really need a ramp, it just allows its aircraft to take off in a very short distance with the ramp instead. Leaving space for one or more aircraft to be landing at the rear simultaneously.
@@Vlaew It 'needs' a ramp in the same way a USMC LHD needs one. In other words, it could operate fine without one, but if you're focused on fixed wing ops then it's extra performance for a relatively small cost.
@@Vlaew That's exactly my point. Those LHDs have half the flight deck area and operate Harriers and F-35B without a ramp. The QE class operates the F-35B and has twice the flight deck area. If they wanted they could go without a ramp, it's not a requirement. The reason LHDs don't have the ramp is that fixed wing flight ops are a secondary role for them, so they're happy to sacrifice a little bit of fixed wing performance in favour of more deck space for their primary role as amphibious assault ships.
