The spectacular waterfall known as Victoria falls, is somewhat halfway along the Zambezi river, it is located at the border between Zambia to the north and Zimbabwe to the South. It has a height of 108 meters and is 1.7 kilometers wide. It is twice as wide and deep as Niagara falls, and the waterfall spans the entire breadth of the Zambezi river. The Zambezi river is the fourth largest river in Africa.
The kaolo Lozi people called it the Mosi-oa Tuyana, meaning “the smoke that thunders. When the Zambezi river is in a full flash flood, the water comes down at an impressive speed, the water makes mist that looks exactly like smoke. and when the water falls down, It makes a noise resembling thunder.
Near the falls there are two towns. Named after David Livingstone, Livingstone is Zambia's main gateway to the Victoria Falls. The town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is also a hub for visitors to one of Africa's greatest wonders of nature.
David Livingstone was a Scottish Missionary and a famous explorer of Africa named the waterfall after Queen Victoria. Livingstone was the first European to cross Africa from south to north, discovered the inspirational waterfall in 1855, during the time when he was preaching Crishtianity in Africa. The fall was barely visited by people until 1905, when a railway to Bulawayo was constructed. Ever since the waterfall was well known until the end of the British Colonial rule. At the end of the 1960’s, the amount of visitors suddenly decreased due to the Guerilla struggle in Zimbabwe, but After Zimbabwe earned its independence, the region was peaceful once again and Victoria falls gained a lot of popularity. You can see 80% of the fall on Zimbabwe's side, and only 20% on Zambia’s side. The best time to visit the fall is in June to July, and there are over 123 fish species found there. There are two national parks found here: Zambezi National Park in Zimbabwe is located upstream from Victoria Falls; it is home to a variety of larger animals including African elephants, lions, Cape buffalo, and leopards. The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park consists of the Zambian half of the World Heritage Site, it extends downstream from the falls and is 'twin' to the Zimbabwean Victoria Falls National Park. Accommodation is provided in campsites in the Zambezi National Park and in the numerous resorts and hotels in and around the towns of Victoria Falls and Livingstone.
