    On the discussion on what to do after green plows the sheep port, one possibility is to punish them back by double road to the 9/4/11. Since green poured a lot on the plow they will lose the race + blue won't get there. The setup becomes more ows but road is also very viable since green's network breaks. It makes the setup too scary and others panic even more tho, so I am not entirely sure either.

    4th position: my pick 369 and 346. Strong as hell. Paired road, a quick expansion to 48, 38 and 26, all should be a lock due to fast road building, then you have a good shot at citying up due to decent ore and 3:1 sheep if there isn't sufficient ore. From there, sky's the limit, but there is plenty of flexibility for both dev cards and LR.
    Edit: I disagree on pointing to the sheep port. 26 wood is a much stronger square even thought the port is redundant. I don't do weak ports (less than 4pp). They are a waste of time, unless you're going for a pure port strategy or lack critical resources and here you have a hybrid set up, so a 2:1 port is not as important. You just need a 3:1 to smooth out any imbalances and you're good to go.

    • @dandydrew
      @dandydrew  Год назад

      The problem about 62 was that there is a road in hand for someone to plow you - Experience has shown me that when you give someone the option to plow, they are more incentives to take it… especially lower skilled opponents. So the point was not to risk the road settle on the port when you have a guaranteed port on the 8 4 (which is better anyways). If the value of the 62 is the port than why not just get the 3:1 on the 84 while giving yourself 2 road settles on the 6 wood and sheep port?

    • @SerbAtheist
      @SerbAtheist Год назад

      @@dandydrew First of all, I don't care about the extra 3:1 port, I care about bumping up my wood production even further. I want as much production as possible when I 'go into the 5-hole' to use my terminology (5-hole: LR needs to built first city, 4-hole: OWS needs to expand). Adding 84, 83 AND 62 makes for high production and strong expansion.
      Second of all, who'll plow me? Yellow needs the wheat port, someone on a 91011 is way behind and in any case 26 is not appealing enough to not only waste an extra road getting to it, but enter a race with me that has a 1 road head start AND a strong coordinated road with no settlement resources missing. It's others who should fear getting plowed by me, though I'm more interested in strategic expansion than plowing someone for the sake of it.

    • @dandydrew
      @dandydrew  Год назад

      @@SerbAtheist but if you are getting the 3:1 on the 84 anyways, why don’t you point right and have the additional option of grabbing the sheep port too? You can always road settle on the 6 wood just like we did to up our wood production. Pointing right is just more optimal IF we agree on taking the 84 port as part of the core setup.

    • @SerbAtheist
      @SerbAtheist Год назад +1

      @@dandydrew 'but if you are getting the 3:1 on the 84 anyways, why don’t you point right and have the additional option of grabbing the sheep port too?'
      Because I don't plan to grab the sheep port in the first place. It's literally at the rock bottom of my list of priorities. I'm more of a production oriented player, especially in the early game. I'd sooner grab both 26 and 6 than the sheep port. Albeit, I can see the merit of pointing right to trick the opponents into believing you're chasing the port and have them waste time and resources to plow you out of it, like what green did.
      My philosophy is that if a port has less than 4pp, and even 4 is iffy, unless I am lacking in critical resources and desperate for a port (and I try to never get into this situation), it might as well not exist. Wasting 6 pieces of material in the early game to get to it is a waste of time, since it takes me 6 trades just to break even compared with 3:1 and even then, I've saved up on 6 sheep, the least valuable material. That's the key advantage of a strong road-based hybrid set up like what you guys had in this game: while everyone else is chasing ports, you're chasing key production squares and can get to them quickly, especially with strong coordinated wood-brick, like here. By the time you secure all the production spots, you're producing a lot of EVERY resource, might not even need a port! And if a 3:1 is included in the package to boot, it all but settles it.
      Anyway, loved the game, and good discussion.

  • @slidenaway
    @slidenaway Год назад

    Okay not much to say about initial placements - y’all already said it all lol
    I do think it was a mistake not dropping the road to the sheep port. In hindsight it didn’t matter, and maybe even at the time it was clear you didn’t NEED the sheep port. But like… blue is already committed to the 3:1 and they have no devs (no rb). So holding the road in that situation, when your plan is sheep port NEXT, just allows you to get plowed or robbed. Right?
    And Drew I love your analogy about going 61 MPH while everyone else goes 60 MPH. After a minute of that you’re only 88 feet ahead. But after an hour… you are a MILE ahead 😎😎😎

    • @dandydrew
      @dandydrew  Год назад +3

      Everyone is so caught up with the sheep port! Where is the 3:1 port love? As a general rule, I advocate a good road game to have the 2 initial settle spot + 3 additional spots as a road player’s plan template. Given that we also had momentum on devs or potentially army, we had plenty of options that worked just fine.
      So we have 634 + 693 settles = 2 points
      1) 84 = 3 points
      2) 83 =4 points
      3) 6 wood = 5 points
      4) City 634 = 6 points
      5) VP pull = 7 points
      6a) LR + Settle for 10
      6b) LR + City for 10
      6c) LR + 2nd VP for 10
      6d) Army + City for 10
      6e) Army + 2nd VP for 10
      6f) Army + LR for 11
      6g) Army + road road settle + 10
      You can see if you have a simple frame work for a setup and options, your game plan becomes very clear and simplifies what you actually need. Sure, we could get sheep but but we have so many options there is no stress to take the risk of racing and losing it.

      @@dandydrew yeah I guess… I mean I don’t think you were in any danger of losing it if you just DROPPED THE ROAD 😂😂
      But I get your overall point. In general I do agree that 3:1 ports are undervalued and really important. And I get the focus on flexibility over the less flexible sheep port here. Thanks for taking the time to write out all the win conditions 😁

      Yo Jay! Of course the sheep port slams, but it’s not necessary to initiate the race when 2 of players have decided to out their positions. At this point, we will play solid and just let our nature advantages of production, 5 resources, and 3:1 port flexibility work magic. Against very strong opponents, I could see green making a case to plow away the port from us to “save the board”. Better to play solid and let the board implode on itself. 😂 Looks like it worked out well lol

    I think green murdered his own game going for the plow on the sheep port. He wasted a lot of ress with those roads, and took ages to settle. His 3:1 port would be good enough for him especially when he uses the plow roads to settle on those very good settlement spots on the board. Especially the 9 11 4 would have been the best option for him, since it makes the connect for road very easy for him. Still think you would have won, cause both army and road was still an option. But green could have made this more of a game instead of this ass wooping. 😂

  • @SerbAtheist
    @SerbAtheist Год назад

    Now to comment on this game, yellow and blue are clearly amateurs and they really sh*t the bed when it came to initial city selection: I don't care how clever you think you are or how well everything is paired or how rare a resource you've hounded, you DO NOT place first two settlements on spots which combine to a lowly FIFTEEN points of production! END OF. This is how games are lost before they even begin! Blue with his 17pp ain't doing much better. You need 20pp at least to have a good game and should not go below this number without a good strategic reason. Green OTOH made a strategic mistake to chase not one but TWO ports for a lowly combined extra of 7pp, instead of going after 5912 and 61112 which would have given him strong production across the board.

    • @dandydrew
      @dandydrew  Год назад

      I have to agree with you on this one. Just not enough production to be viable for yellow and blue. Green had a shot but he needed to work with the board better to build some momentum. Frankly, considering we pulled a mono and 2 vps with the road play, Green didn’t have a chance with that luck against us.
