I've been a tennis fan since the early 2000s and I remember that for a long time, I wasn't a fan of Djokovic because I felt like he wanted the approval too much. I was (and still am) a die hard Rafa fan because his passion for the sport resonated with me the most. But over the years, I realized not only what an exceptional athlete Djokovic is but also how much he had to battle being constantly disrespected. If Roger or Rafa (or anyone else) had Djokovic's achievements and stats, there would be absolutely ZERO debate about who the GOAT is. More than that, they would have been treated like a living God. But somehow the world seems to be reluctant, hesitant or even downright hateful when it's Djokovic.
I remember that over all these years, in all of Djokovic's matches, the audience would always root for his opponent. No, this is not just because they love to see the underdog win. If that was the case, then Roger and Rafa would have received the same treatment. But they didn't. They were always loved. But for some reason people have always loved to hate on Djokovic. And when I think of all these things combined, I have nothing but the utmost respect for this guy. It would have been so easy to fall into the victim role, get bitter and resentful over this very bizarre and unjustified hate he has received for all those years. But instead, he is the most gracious of all players. Graciously congratulating his opponents when he loses (like no one else), never coming up with lazy excuses, always giving credit where it's due. Very involved in the politics behind tennis, advocating for players' rights, even if it's not to his own personal benefit (most top players would never waste their energy on things like that) and so much more. Where does he get the energy for all this? Not only is he the best tennis player of all time, he also endures the constant disrespect thrown towards him, is super humble and tries to create better chances for future generations of players. The more I see how he is treated by the media, the fans, etc., the more ashamed I am for us all. This guy deserves a lot more respect than he is given. End of rant.

Djocovic has Millions of Fans in Serbia and all over the world. He has a wonderful wife and wonderful children, parents, siblings and Trainer staff. They all stand behind him and love him.
Only the Media and a handful silly and most drunk people in the Audience hate him.
And this is why they cant get it, that a man of poor family did this unbelievable tennis career. ... and has the courage to say NO to the Mainstream Ideologies like for example in Corona Times. This was an intelligence test. And Nivac is one of the Intelligent ones. You cant manipulate him. And therefore the corrupt Media hate him and some idiots hate him. Most people in The World admire him endlessly. God bless Novac!

I think people just don't like how he looks and carries himself, regardless of his grace at the net after the match. It's a kind of strange bigotry. I was a huge Federer fan. He's easy to like, he's goofy in interviews, incredibly graceful in his movement. Novak didn't have that kind of charm or vulnerability. And because people gravitated to the artistry of Federer, or the humble warrior, Nadal, Novak was the odd man out, and people are simple and need heroes and villains. novak was hard to pigeonhole as a hero. So he became the outcast. But I saw this as a lack of imagination from the tennis audience, not a reflection on him. I liked the eay he used that prejudice against him to fire himself up and win matches. He was the underdog, in terms of audience approval, and he almost fed on it. That shows psychological agility. I don't love him like i love Federer, but I like, admire and respect him. Due to audiences, he had it tougher than the other 2/3. More credit to him, then, for continuing to win and break records with this psychological obstacle.
To see his true self, watch him go to the net to give the handshake after a match, whether he wins or loses. He is even more gracious since he moved ahead in slams, but it's always been there, with very few exceptions. That's the player I admire.

Tony apologised - I don't think it was to criticise Serbia or the fans or the player in Djokovic. Everyone needs to remember, without media, these athletes will never make the money they make! We are all human, we make mistakes, we say things we shouldn't. Djokovic acted as a human with his response which was totally fair enough. I honestly don't think Tony Jones should be held out to dry for this but again with this noise and us all talking about it, media are doing their job!

Tony would never have said that about Roger or Rafa. It wasn't a joke, it was him displaying his lack of respect and then dressing it up as a joke. He then tried to contradict Novak by saying he had reached out to Novak before this match, but he did it in private. If you insult someone publicly for the whole world to see then you apologise publicly too, not try to hide it by doing it away from the spotlight.

👏👏👏 You are right to refuse interviews by Channel Nine. It was a disgrace!
Tony Jones should be removed from his job at the Australian Open immediately. What an unprofessional thing to do to any sports person, particularly one of Novak Djokovic's standing. It was not humorous. It was not banter. It was insulting, rude and incredibly unprofessional.
And TJ's "non-apology" is a joke. One is supposed to apologize for ones own actions - not for how the other person reacted to those actions.
"I apologize for any disrespect that Novak felt that i may have caused". Im sorry, but that is just bullshit. The apology is as insulting as the "banter".

It's hard for most Aussies to even fathom, better yet actually observe, someone with a backbone and principles, hence why most here find Novak so triggering. In a country of cowardly, weak willed and entitled children masquerading as adults, Novak shines an uncomfortable light on all whenever he visits. Tony, having bent the knees like most here during "the viru$" and its subsequent juicing campaign, can't stand the idea of a free man who stands up for himself and doesn't bend like a cheap deck chair at the first signs of societal and political pressure. Shame on you Tony, I'm glad Novak called you out, and in doing so, again shined a light on your kind, which Australia, unfortunately, is still mostly made up of...

What an absolute overreaction and outright dribble in your comments. If you don’t like Australia you are free to leave at any time but you won’t because it’s a fantastic country and you know it. Tony Jones is a single reporter who tried to be funny and missed the mark, it was cringeworthy yes, but offensive? …. please. How soft is the world becoming. This has nothing to do with the country as a whole and is just fake outrage at its finest.

Channel 9 must initiate disciplinary action against Tony Jones. While freedom of the press is undoubtedly crucial and a fundamental pillar of democracy, it is not without limits. Tony Jones’ remarks crossed that line. No journalist has the right to insult or mock an individual or even an entire nation under the guise of reporting or freedom of speech.
What is even more disappointing is his so-called "apology" interview. It hardly came across as a sincere apology and instead seemed to suggest that Novak was overreacting. Sometimes, a single individual can shape the image of an entire nation. I’ve never visited Australia, but Channel 9’s handling of this situation, along with Tony Jones’ actions, has left me unable to hold any positive feelings toward the country.

This kind of banter by Tony Jones is just idiotic and very childish imo. I remember back in the 2000's when channel 7 and SBS covered the summer and winter olympics they had a program on in the evenings called 'The Dream with Roy and HG' and that was brilliant banter. I tuned in every night to watch them it was so refreshing and funny, yet they remained very respectful towards the athletes. We need more of that today.
