- Building a bird feeder with my dad and son - it was my first real woodworking project with my son!
Made from cedar fence pickets. I let my 4 year old son pick out everything from the specific boards, paint colors and hanging hardware. He had a great time and so did my dad and I.

That's a great picture of your dad, you and your son at the end of the video.
Thanks Ted, it's all about the memories!
Great build Nick , and an even more heart warming family project. Way to 'Super Dad'! It brought back memories of learning and working on projects with my Father and Grandfather. Those are priceless treasures all three of you will share forever.
Thanks to Jay Bates and Rock-n H Woodshop for introducing another cool woodworker.
Thanks, I like the family time. I also like showing my kids building things is often more fun than buying pre made stuff. He is too young to use sketch up, but he watched as I designed it and added his ideas too.
Nick Ferry you are one majorly cool Dad.
That is something he will cherish forever. He had a blast from the looks of it.
Great project and family time!
Thanks for watching, he did have a blast.
I'm just glad the kid was there with his jeep or you guys woulda never gotten the birdhouse back there.
Awesome Video grateful the boy saved the day on this one!
thanks - planning the next one with my youngest son
Nick Ferry Thats awesome.I would love to see you tackle the task of a purple martin house they are challenging to make but a lot of fun! I'm a bird man thats what brought me here but you got a nice channel would love to see more bird oriented stuff
who knows - maybe - glad to have you here
Nick, the one thing I enjoyed about the video is your time spent with your child. They are a Blessing from the Creator, Jesus Christ. I really enjoy parents taken time with children. My baby is in Heaven with Jesus Christ and hopefully I'll be there with her soon. Thank you
+Eđ Straub thank you
Been following Jay for a year now and he brought me to your site. Great build with your son. My grandson is almost to that age and this will be a nice project for us to work on together. Great job to you as well young Mr. Ferry. Look Forward to the next video
Glad to hear another person heard about me from Jay. Thanks for the kind words, we all had a blast.

Quito Mauro Thank you and thanks for watching!
It's great to see three generations of family working together. Your son wants to be like his daddy :) great stuff Nick.
Passion Woodworking thanks, it was a memorable one for sure
Excelente video! Saludos desde México!
Gracias, y gracias por su atención. Me alegro de que te haya gustado!
Sorry if that doesn't make sense, my spanish is pretty rusty.
Nick Ferry Your Spanish is better than my Inglish ;)
It was cool to see your family in this one. It was also cool to see your dad (?) getting in on the act and helping where he can.
HonestDoubter Yup, father, son and grandpa. I built a similar project with him almost 25 years ago and I never forgot how much fun it was. I can only hope my son won't forget anytime soon either.
Very cool that you let your Son help....he will never forget that. GOOD DAD! ;)
He sure will - thanks
from India good bless you sir & your family because you duing for a inosent birds very good sir
god
Like it. Keep em coming. Good to see kids learning. I do the same with my girls.
It's a great feeling to pass on some woodworking tradition.
Great idea to use the pickets
Thanks - they work great for many applications
Looks like he had a lot of fun!
He did, and already wants to build another
Way to get the whole crew involved!!! Love it, man.
+william3636 yeah, super fun to make it getting everyone involved
love how the dad involves the kid. great Job
+animeworldnr1 thank you!
BRAVO Daddy. I have spent hours looking for some idea of a simple bird feeder and here I not only find your design is just what I am looking for but I get the pleasure of seeing a dad with his son together working in the shop. My hats off to you dad for being such a great dad. I have seen many really nice feeders and I made a really nice one years ago in France but I had to leave there on my trip back to California so being in the middle of a project I still want to put a quick and easy feeder together and yours is the one I am going to copy but mine will be a bit longer with a bit more over hang but still your style just the same.
Thanks for the kind words - nothing I really enjoy more than spending time with my kids in the workshop - so many memories to create and if I can help them learn workshop or life skills then that's even better - glad you enjoyed it and could get some design ideas
My little boy and I watched this together.. Great Build Nick!
WoodenCreationz Thanks, that's really cool
Thank you for getting your son into the actual build! Will subscribe in hopes if seeing you and son build together. Nice to see 3 generations woodworking together. BTW, also like the build! Thanks for sharing.
thanks for the kind words, more videos to come
loved this...good job guys!
Great job little man. Awesome video. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
Good idea getting the kid involved.
God bless you ❤❤❤. It’s a really warming heart project working all together, I’m very sure all of you enjoyed it, specially your little one and I believe that this it’s the perfect way to teach your son to do every day something great for others 😊. Oooh let me tell you I’ll copy the amazing design because I’m looking to make something like this to my big birds friends (doves, blue jays, red cardinals and another variety of feathers..lol), I saw that they don’t fit well in the small feeders that I have on my front and backyard, so this project its amazing…thanks so much for sharing 😊❤❤❤❤.
3 generation project, great design and video.
Thank you I enjoyed it thoroughly
Great project! Nick, Think I need need to make one this fall with my 5 year old, Thanks
Thanks Jon, definitely had fun building it.
Awesome video, definitely going to do with my kid!
Thank you Nick
Thanks!
Nicely done
Thank you
Nice work! the best examples for your child. its better to spent your time in this way. Keep bulding things.
much appreciated!
Very , very , very beautiful work!!!
Fantástic family!!! Congratulations!!!
thank you kindly!
Hi Nick,
Really cool video. I hope the birds love it!
Mark
Thank you. I still can't believe how many birds it attracts. My son just loves to watch all the birds.
Nice heartwarming video Nick. I guess I missed it the first time around. Thanks for the reminder.
Maybe your next challenge should be 'family project" or "kids project" for those that have them. A project that has family participation.
JimE
blackemmons Thank you - I have heard a couple people mention a kids/spouses/family project - it is a cool idea
I love the music choices, awesome!
thanks !
Absolute best part....you did it with your son (?)......Go to the head of the class!!!!!
Thank you Charles!
Nick, Love the vids, just started watching you recently and now addicted. Yours, April’s and Izzy Swans - love em all.
Seeing your lad there reminds me of my own son, he’s 18 now and 6’1”. Fond memories of the days he’d have his head up between my hand and my head whilst I was trying to fix or install something. I couldn’t see a thing but he wanted to be there learning and is still my right hand man now with home projects. Enjoy them whilst you can buddy, it’s the old saying of they grow so fast but believe me, they do.
Keep em coming bud, best wishes from the UK.
thanks - and thank you for sharing - yeah they are growing up way too quick - fun and sad to see at the same time
Perfect perfect perfect,bravo
Great idea using fencing.
thanks - it's super cheap and great with all the weather
Nick Ferry, I agree. Thank you for sharing.
no problem, thanks for checking it out
Love the music ! Love the fact the urchin is wearing safety glasses. (Oh, 'urchin' for me is a compliment, I call me grandkids that.) Very instructive video, Thanks!
Thanks much!
Nice feeder build with son but should have put plexi glass sides on to hold more feed.
Birds will devour that seed In a couple hours.
Fix rope hangar or will slip to one side with weight of several birds.
Such a great video and build...awesome job
+Rocky Phillips thank you Rocky!
I like your project. Lovely three generations! 真棒👍
thanks!
Great video with the little guy ! Keep him interested in the garage, and he will not have time to get into all the crap out there today (drugs, getting into trouble, etc). ...
+Tomm Marree couldn't agree more!!!
I agree with Ted Alexander below. The picture of you and your dad, caused me to frantically find the pause button so I didn't move to the next video. I'm about to retire and love watching RUclips and learning about things, anything.
Btw Go Packers... Next year will be a better year with Nelson back. Are you a Wisconsin person or just a Packer fan? I grew up in Waukesha. I'm retiring in KY and think I will begin making videos as I create my shop, remodel the "repo" home that I bought, and learn how to enjoy country living. Keep up the good work.
Oh ya, one more thing. As people, myself included, watch RUclips with a "smart" TV, how can you subscribe, thumbs up, or even comment? I think your thumbs up will begin to become understated.
+Rick Cook thanks man, family means a lot to me - I live in green bay, have my whole life - and I have no idea on a smart TV
Nice video, is that 3 generations of bird feeder builders there? Not only did you guys build a bird feeder, but you also built some great memories too.
Thanks, yes it is. It's all about the memories. My dad and I talked about when I was young and him and I built one. All in all it was a fun Saturday down memory lane.
Nice work congratulations to you and the whole family, greetings from florence
thanks man!!!
That turned out great Nick. I subbed. Cheers mate
Cool, thanks for subbing
That is a really beautiful bird feeder! My son wanted to buy one, I am going to show him this one and have him follow your video and build one soon. Thank you
awesome - great father son project!
Top one nick
Much appreciated 👊🏻
Great idea and job👏🏼 I'm gonna try it🙋🏻
👍🏻👍🏻
what a nice video Nick, best wishes to you and your family
thanks much - I appreciate that!
Nick! And now I find that you, too, have a RUclips channel. Great job on the video, Sir. It's cool to see three generations working together on a project like that. Bravo. and... subscribed.
Thanks Steve
Very nice build video--thanks for posting!
If you loop the chain at least once around the shepherds hook, it will add some stability and keep the ends from tipping.
=Brian=
toolguybak The funny thing is, I read your comment and immediately went outside and did what you said. Perfect. Sometimes the simple things can go right past me. Thanks for the tip.
Super bro.......
Thanks
Great video! I am ready to build one of these now. The only thing I don't have is the miter saw
I shared this to my facebook as well
If you do t have access to one a circular saw or jigsaw will work fine
Very nice video.
Thanks, my son had so much fun
Nice job good to see you involving your Son good memories good times. Glad IzzY Swan reccomended this vid to watch. well actually it was the styrofoam stage setting but Im glad.
Thanks, I wish I would have taken more video when doing the styrofoam but I didn't make youtube videos then. That was one of the projects that once completed, I thought people might want to see.
good work !!! nice clip !!!early boy !!!
+emadonn mc thank you!
Belíssimo trabalho e obrigado por postar.
obrigado de nada
What a great family project! I really enjoyed watching your video. I'd like to be able to make something like that. I hate that right now my birds are feeding in the rain. I should just go and open up an umbrella over their feeder.......
Donna Capuano Thank you, this year I am going to be doing a video with my dad and youngest boy too! I love the memories - an umbrella would be cool to see, lol
Nick Ferry great working with the family ♡
Parabéns por incentivar a criança a cuidar da natureza. Ela terá respeito pelo trabalho concluído pois ajudou a construir.
obrigado
Nice video. You could tell the boy was chomping at the bit to use that brad nailer. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if he got a hold of it for the whole build! Many possibilities!
Thanks buddy - yeah he really digs the nailer!
I could just see it. "What a beautiful birdhouse, lefty. Whose hand is that decoration the back?"
FUTURE CARPENTER
I hope!
Quedo muy bonita Saludos desde Venezuela
I have spent months studying constructing a bird house and found an awesome resource at Aviary magic method (google it if you are interested)
got the whole family tree working on this one!
Scott Haun Yup, got to make those memories right? We all had fun
Nice !!!
thanks!
+Nick Ferry sorry someone probably already asked this but do you have the plans and where could I get them for your brilliant bird feeder.
james birdsall I don't as of now but I may in the future when I build another similar project with my youngest son.
Nick Ferry OK thanks for replying anyway
nothing better family
+Jack Brown I agree
you seem to have a really competent little helper, did he come with the shop or did you have to build him yourself?
great project btw :)
Thanks, yeah he is homemade.
Jay Bates brought me here. great build with the boy.
Awesome, I hope you stick around to see what's next. Thanks for watching!
Heel mooi gemaakt
Derk Hummel dankjewel
Dont tell me you know dutch nick:)
Gerard VanDijk very very little - mostly words I probably shouldn't know , lol
Nice job! I'd like to make a similar one. Is it painted inside, too?
Katona Péter thanks - I think we painted just the insides of the top and sides
Nice
frehleycomet thanks!
Almost forgot, and S hook in the middle of the chain will keep the feeder from tipping.
+Rick Cook I ended up wrapping the chain in a loop around it
Love it! Plans or measures? Please!
Enrique Lolli-Dyer thank you - I don't have any plans as I built it very much on the fly
Ok, thank you.
Great idea to work with your son. What kind of paint did you use on the bird feeder?
Thanks - it was just a latex paint - I can’t remember if it was indoor or outdoor
Hi Nick, again, great video, I would have liked to build that with my dad. So the music sounds like Klesmer (sp?), pretty cool, what is it. Thanks, Jim
I can't remember, the music was either listed on screen or in the description
well if you go through Appleton, have a drink of water. I spent several weeks installing UV disinfection in the city water system.
+Rick Cook very cool - i go to appleton for my orange chicken fix
Nice video and great idea for a project that I can do with my son! Noticed the Packer shirt... Are you from the Green Bay Area?
Thanks - yup, Green Bay
What are the plans for the bird feeder the angle ;s of cuts ext iv;e only just found you on here and ill;be sure to follow
rhian evans I just made whatever angles looked good - didn't have any plans
Can't help but notice that your hand is always in a bad spot when you are using your nail gun! Be careful, also good job on the build.
God bless
Really nice build, may I ask what angle you set the roof at?
can't remember exactly but I'd say it has an included angle of around 90°
How do you like your Grizzly jointer? I was thinking of getting that one.
+Dylan Pieniazek not a big fan - works in a pinch but the infeed outfeed is really too small for what I want it to do - power is fine but the fence could do a lot better job locking and staying put
+Nick Ferry Thanks, I'll look around a bit then and see what else I can find. I don't work with really long pieces of lumber though, so maybe it would work.
+Dylan Pieniazek short stock would work great on it - just try not to bump the fence too much and you'd probably be pretty satisfied with it
赞不绝口
谢谢
Nick do you have the plans on the bird house thank you
+Everett O I do not - just roughed it out quick
l want one,lol.
thanks!
Great video but you didnt give any information on cut sizes, nail size etc!
build it whatever size you want and depending on what size you build it would depend on what size fasteners you would use
It would be nice if you add measurements for us beginners
build it whatever size you want
oh joy let a child be so close to a nail gun even touch when in action....nice!!!
How long have you worked with nail guns?
@@NickFerry years and not with a minor
not really answering the question - if you had enough experience with brad nailers you’d know how ignorant your initial comment is - what operation did we perform that is unsafe?
@@NickFerry i think years is an answer!!! You try and work out why a minor so close to the nail gun and even touching it in operation is dangerous, see who's ignorant, thanks bye
