    Before I started to scuba dive on backplate and wing setups I dived on recreational BCDs and didn't know any better, and didn't have anybody to teach me how to build a backplate, harness and wing BCD.

    This is great information. Believe it or not we've been diving (all recreational) for 30 years. I've never really looked into backplate systems before but am looking to change up my BCD for a more travel friendly lightweight option and this is looking like the ticket for me. Plus I am now semi retired, so we're diving more and am doing much more underwater photography so again this looks like a much cleaner solution. Thank you for all the info. Great stuff. 🙂

      Nice! You can dive 'recreational' BCDs all of your diving career, we were using them during my commercial course but, a backplate gives you so much more control and customisation to build your own BCD.
      I'm actually writing a video for this Saturday on the @scubadivermag channel about backplate components and choices if you're interested

    Another great part of the backplate is being able to a V weight in the backplate, it's helped considerably with trim. Especially the highland has soft weight attachment.

    I wish I had someone to guide me when I bought my first BCD. I wasted a bunch of money on a recreation BCD because of the opinion of a shop owner that “doesn’t see the need to go deep, or explore wreaks, or caves”. After about 25 dives I invested in DIR backplate, wing, and long hose, and have never looked back. I dive a backplate when I go single tank, and doubles. Next is sidemount, and tech dive courses.

    Funny thing is when I switched to a backplate, wing, steel doubles and a dry suit in preparation to taking my first technical diving class is that I have pretty much the same sac rate as when I was diving a jacket bcd and a single aluminum 80 in a shorty wetsuit in warm water because I was able to be more streamlined and trimmed out.

    I use a scubapro x-tek harness, x-tex soft back plate and apex 18 pound donut. I love my setup. I am a working diver, so I use it daily and spend ALOT of time in the water. I recently had to use a regular bcd. I did not like it at all, felt so bulky and cumbersome. Backplate diver for life

    When getting certified and on my first three fun-dives after that, I wore rental jacket BCDs. I had sizing issues with all but one of them (having to wear a 'small' BCD as an average sized guy is a bit weird, isn't it?). After doing my internet research, and finding virtually no-one that switched back from a BP/W to a jacket BCD I bought a Tecline DIR BP/W for my first own BCD. Even as a recreational diver, the freedom of movement it gives me alone is worth it. And the sizing is of course perfect for me :) Since the Netherlands is all about cold-water diving, having to carry 2kg less in my pockets is a nice added bonus. I've only done four dives with it so far, but I'm converted!

  • @bullsharkreef

    I dive with a backplate, soft for travel and SS when at home, for cold water use or travel by car, but they're definitely not for everyone; More than the money they take a considerable amount of time to built, setup, adjust and trim compared to a regular BCD where you just pretty much put on and go diving. Regular BCD also are more comfortable on the surface when waiting to be picked up by the dive boat, unless you trim your weight, but that takes a considerable amount of time, lots of trial and error, and the moment you change suit(going from full to shorty for example) you have to do all over again.
    So with that in mind I would say that for the vast majority of divers out there, a regular BCD is probably best, and why most training center teach using those.

    I'm putting together a backplate BCD for a total cost of under US$300. Skeleticed aluminum backplate, 20lbs or 30lbs lift donut, 3.5m 2" Webbing, Single Tank Adapter, two Tank Straps, one Weight Belt Buckle, two Weight Pockets. I doubt you can buy a BCD for that.

    Quick question. What are you thought about using backplates for sidemount?

There are bp&w setups such as Scubapro xtek, XDeep nx zen, Halcyon etc. how do they compare with each other and with custom build through a local dive shop? Are their components interchangeable or is it better to literally build your own bcd from scratch? And what if there are no dive shops nearby and you must rely on online ordering? Any advice is welcome and appreciated. 🙏🏼

    I just found your new channel, good to see your making it through this wonderful year we’re having. I’m going to be buying my first bpw, I’m looking at the mares xr and the xdeep zen standard. In your opinion are the the alterations xdeep made to their system worth the extra $200 over the basic set up of the xr?

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 года назад +1

      That "wonderful year" sounds like sarcasm Chris...
      If I were starting from scratch again I'd go for the Zen, the wider backplate and Y-crotch strap will be much more comfortable when diving in warm water.
      The only area where XDEEP falls down is in compatibility with other brands, it can be hard to make other brands accessories to fit XDEEP BCDs. So if you want to shift to twins you pretty much have to have a XDEEP wing.
      But I'd still go for the Zen over the XR, Ghost for a light single BCD

    and now i am considering to use a backplate, nice vid! But still bit not sure to get myself a hybrid one (Scubapro Hydrospro) or Halcyon carbon fibre, any advices? much appreciated!

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  3 года назад

      Hydros Pro isn't a true Backplate and Harness system like the Halcyon, it's more of a modular recreational BCD, so if you're planning on moving to a more technical setup I'd cross it off my list. It isn't particularly light neither.
      The Halcyon Carbon Fibre Backplate is built to be lightweight for travel but if you want something for strength I'd recommend Aluminium, it's just as light but stronger.
      It depends what setup you're looking to use; singles/twins, lightweight travel...

    One question: do you use the same plate and change the bladder (30 to 40lbs of buoyancy), for rec diving ang t c diving or do you keep it fixed!?

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  11 месяцев назад

      Yes, you can use the same backplate and harness and swap the bladder to swap between single and twin cylinders.
      I tend to use the steel backplate at home and then a separate aluminium backplate for traveling.

    Hi there. Bought myself a mares xr back plate wing system bcd. Never used one before. Will it be tricky to use the first time ? Going to dive at florida Keys in July. Would you recommend using a wetsuit or just a rashguard. By the way, Thank you for all the helpful videos. Always watching from my side. Thank you kindly

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  Месяц назад

      Hi! I'd keep to simple dives with new gear so that you can focus on the new gear. In the water you probably won't notice much of a difference.
      With new BCDs I take extra care on ascent so I have plenty of time to dump gas.
      As far as exposure protection, it depends on how much you feel the cold. Too much is usually better than not enough and most divers seem to use a 3mm unless they're diving deep or long dives or in colder northern waters and need something thicker. In warmer waters some divers are good in just a rash vest.
      I tend to test the water on dive #1 in a wetsuit and assess if I need it for dive #2

I am lokking at the hydros pro from Scubapro currently, but I‘m also Interested in Backplate BCD‘s. If you were to lose consciousness on the surface after a dive would a bpw setup keep your head upright? I've been told they tend to put you in a face down floating position. That is a big safety concern. I am a beginner who has only done dives with jacket style bcd. To those with bpw experience, is there a way around this problem?

    • @LowProFile1803
      @LowProFile1803 Год назад

      If you were to loose conciousness at the surface after a dive, I will rely on my buddy to turn me face up, as a jacket bcd is not automatically turning you facing up, but it mostly depend on your body position at the moment you black out. I dive on W/BP and done rescue diver courses with. No problem to lay on your back at the surface, even with a wing fully inflated.

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 года назад +2

      Yeah, quick release clips on recreational BCDs do make it easier to get in and out of them compared to a backplate but there's nothing stopping you taking your backplate off in the water.
      Sometimes it can be easier to get in and out of your BCD in the water so you're not doing yoga poses on the deck...

      @@SafeDiving Thanks! I asked because Im fascinated with backplate configurations, and in my country, Portugal, we mostly use small speedboats crowded and full of gear! • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, while the little Dude is growing I wouldn't invest in a Rec-style BCD. Even kids BCDs he'll grow out of before long. They are made to allow for more adjustment, but still, he'll grow out of it eventually.
      A good BPW system can grow up with him and change as his style changes and you can bypass the Rec gear and head straight to BPW.
      If he grows out of the harness, webbing is cheap. He won't outgrow the backplate or the bladder...

    • @Ben-ie1ht
      @Ben-ie1ht 4 года назад +5

      You can use integrated lead but it depends on the dive and Reg setup, when you plan on going with a short hose lead pouches are ok but with a log hose setup it's to say the least interesting. Because you can't store your hose behind it its to short to breath comfortably and you can't get a hose holder bar or tank light because in the position where you would put it normally you have now your lead pouches.
      I use myself lead pouches for recreational dives tbh if i go wreck diving i dont use them the reason is that i don't want to accidentally release my lead when i get stuck or get my hose tangled up. #flappysnaghazert

      Look up what it means to setup a “balanced rig”. This is what you should aspire to create as you get more into diving. If your setup is “balanced” you should be able to kick to the surface without having to ditch any weight. Most backplate divers I know place “v weights” under their tanks which arent ditchable.
      Until then, Id recommend using a weight belt.

    • @QuickQuips
      @QuickQuips 3 года назад

      Depends. Sometimes you can find ways to add weight like with a steel tank, or putting buckshot in places at the bottom. Going with a steel plate also adds ~2 pds. But in a new dive, or with thick wetsuits, chances are you'll be weighted down. You'll still feel a difference compared to jackets.
