Glued to my D800. Underrated, I’ve used for travel, weddings, long exposure night photos and I’m really impressed with it. On my Z6 I’ve shot 1/2 sec handheld shots with it no problem.
Yeah man, love this lens when I got my D750 back in the day. Never understood why people didn't like it. It does exactly what you tell it to do! Good stuff my dude.
Thanks!! It was weird before I bought the 780 package I read some reviews and there was no middle ground. A lot of people loved it and then a percentage of people despised it lol 😂
My thought is that it can be caused by the bad reputation of the older 24-120 f/3.5-5.6 VR. Back then when the EF 24-105 f/4 IS was the go to kit lens for many Canon DSLR buyers, Nikonians could not find one that was good enough for them. Hence, the Nikon 24-120 (old or new) is not on the top of their wish lists. On the other hand, the 24-120 f/4 can be a good choice for new Nikonians who are not influenced by its history. That is my experience since 2008, after I picked up the D3. Also, even I have the EF 24-105 f/4 IS (for my 5D series) as well, but rarely use it, but instead the lens trinity.
If you're a great photographer, this is a great lens. Some good photographers compensate skill for buying the fastest f/1.4 or f/1.2 lenses and that can help, I always recommend upgrading your lenses or just glass over camera. I've had the 24-70 f/2.8G and more recently the 24-70mm f/2.8EVR and I love both, but I ended up selling both. I literally sold the 24-70mm f/2.8E VR because it wouldn't fit in my bag, I know weird or stupid, but important to me. I'm a photojournalist shooting mostly sports and breaking news. I shoot with two Nikon D5's or a D5/D850 depending on what I need or won't based on lighting or conditions, etc. My main two most used lenses that are always in my bag are the 70-200mm f/2.8E VR FL and 500mm f/4E VR FL, with a TC-14E III for when I need or want more reach. So I have only enough room for one more lens in my ThinkTank Airport Accelerator backpack. The 24-70mm f/2.8E VR was an awesome lens and I wish I could have kept it, since I got a very sharp copy and was very impressed. But unfortunately I had to either take only my 70-200FL and the 24-70 VR and leave my 500FL at home or just take the 500mm and one of the zooms, leaving a huge gap in focal length! So I sold off my 24-70 VR, there was no way I was going to sell one of the telephoto lenses as I use and love those much. So I decided to buy one of these 24-120mm f/4 VR lenses and I was honestly surprised by it. I never thought I'd own one or would want one, but f/4 when paired with VR is fine and honestly I really like this lens, but more importantly it fits in my bag. So now I have 24mm-700mm covered, all in one bag, with two flagship sized bodies. This lens in the right hands can produce amazing images, period. It's affordable and it's colors are surprising good, just as good as the pro-grade f/2.8 lenses in my opinion. I won't use my copy much past 70mm, just because I have the epic 70-200mm f/2.8E FL lens, but I do love it at the wide to normal range!
I don’t use any of the gear you use but for the past few years up to now I keep on watching every video you put up because you show the joy and beauty of photography.
Dude, back whenI was Nikon shooter I used 24-120 f/4 lens so much. Very sharp, and between 100-120mm close up you can actually get nice bokeh for a portrait. Wasn’t my first choice for portraits, but for an all around lens it was excellent.
Started watching you, went from a d7100 to an d810 (then you went d780!) with this lens (second hand) and absolutely love it. It is what it is but boy is it good at it.
Great video. I used to have this lens but got the Sigma 24-105 f4 and I personally found it to be sharper although it is a heavy beast! My usual walk around lens is the Nikon 24-85 lens, probably one of the sharpest mid range zooms out there although it has a variable aperture.
This is a great lens. Shot a few dozen weddings with it on my D750... all clients were happy... sharp images with strong contrast... effective VR... I strongly recommend it.
nice review. would love to see how this lens does on a z6. feels like a better option than the 24 - 70 f/4. I have a 24 - 70 f/2.8, but strongly considering selling it. originally i saw it as the most flexible of all lenses, but the more i use it, the more i see it as the compromise of all lenses. the IQ is not as good as prime. In low light, i am probably switching to a prime anyway. The f2.8 might offer better depth of field than an f/4, but 120 f/4 will give the same bokeh as 70 f/2.3, and a more flattering perspective for portraits. Unless you are shooting events/portraits, I'm seeing this as a better option than 24 70 f2.8
Just came across this video. I have the D850 and the kit lens is absolutely fine for me. It’s always the first lens I use and like you said covers 80%+ of everything I do.
I’m torn right now. I shoot with a D810 and borrowed this lens from a friend. Been shooting with it for about a month. I have to return it today and debating on buying it now. I actually got some pretty good low light results with it. My alternative is the Nikon 28-300 f/5.6. Both are good walk about lenses.
I got mine in Taiwan for around US$400 at a used lens store. Love it for day street photos and travel. For night I use the Tamron 24-70 f2.8, but that one is really heavy and much prefer this f4 lens for day use, it's half the weight and built to take a beating.
I got this lens 2014 when Nikon d750 came out . I love using on my d750 and d810 for landscape and travel photography. Sometimes for fun when I go hiking and I don’t want to carry full frame camera and 70-200 2.8 lens , I m using on my Nikon zfc with the F to Z adapter witch is around 180mm with the asp sensor 😊.
Glad you posted this. I am thinking of going back to Nikon and was wondering about this lens. I want the D850 for specific reasons but this D780 w/the 24-120mm F4 deal for everything else I shoot looks pretty attractive for those of us looking to keep our camera bags light.
Bagged one at a used shop for 260 just the other day because they said it was marked, after a few blows and a lens wipe though the front element is near mint! Excited to try it this week
I use that lens for my landscape photography, the only bad thing I can say about this lens it does produced mucho flare with sun in front of you, for the rest I love ... but a very good kit lens Fujifilm 18-55mm 😍😍😍😍
Kind of funny, I ordered one for 350 bucks from a vendor in Germany where I live. I didn't do too much research on it, I just remembered how good the Canon equivalent 24-105 F4 L that I used to have was. Thank you for this very entertaining and informative video, now I can't wait for it to arrive. Have a good one. -Mart
Agreed 500 is a good price for this lens. But the Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 G2 is pretty much the same size and price (if bought separate) and a much better lens with crazy good stabilization (great for video) you should rent it to see what you think.
The Tamron is faster with 2.8 ...yet the Nikon has more reach with 120mm (including the 85mm and 105mm focal lengths which are favorable by many portraits photographers)... I don't have either but weighing my options to choose one) this lens can be found for about 500$ dollars new (unused pre-owned ) while the tamron would cost 800-900$ for the same condition... beside I expect the Nikon will adapt better with a Z camera if I decided to move to mirrorless... Tamron 24-70 2.8 g2 would be a good choice yet I'm leaning to the Nikon
@@estoylisto You should be able to find a 24-85mm VR lens for $200-250 and that is a great portable lens that you can keep even if you upgrade since it's nice for travel, being so small and light. Would be my suggestion for a cheap but great "normal" (aka 24-70+) zoom lens.
I don't actually own a zoom so It may be an excuse to get my first one. I'm seeing the D780 with this lens at £2120 from the grey exporter I bought my D750 from.
@@markshirley01 I've been shooting my Tamron 45mm for everything before purchasing the 24-120. It's a big relief that just adding one more lens makes my kit a swiss army knife. Plus having vr in both lenses helps with low light shooting a lot!
When I bought my D750 about 3 years ago the body was on sale for $2000, normally $2300 or if you went ahead and payed the $2300 you for the 24mm-120mm. Only $300 more. Absolutely no regrets. This lens is the only kit lens I have ever considered and I have been extremely pleased with it. Not a grey market product either.
A lot of kit lenses can do a pretty good job (for beginners but also for advanced photo- and videographers).I am still totally happy with my a6400 kit lens. But your kit lens is obviously another level! I really enjoyed this video, keep up the great work and stay safe :)
I have never been a big fan of kit lenses. However, the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5 to 5.6 G AF VR (52mm filter) has really impressed me for a kit lens that cost less than $100.
Enter the Fuji 16-80 mm quite newly designed f4 lens, also now a kit-lens... same equivalent Full frame focal length - 24-105 - amazing optical results
Totally agree! I’m a Nikon user for 7 years (Work) and just add Fuji to be my personal camera and I was really surprised with the construction and sharpness of the 18-55 2.8 🔥
@H3lt3r Sk3lt3r We are talking of common KIT LESES right? BTW smaller apertures doesn't mean bad optical quality image hahaha :P You are welcome to visit my work to check if it has the required quality. Peace! facebook.com/torresphotoworks
Good kit & combination. Today I would prefer a second hand z7 + 24-120 z mount (Sharper , less heavy, 45 Mpix (and lens becoming a 30-180mm in DX format keeping the definition of the d780) for not a lot more : z7 2nd hand 1500 euros + z 24-120 = 1250 / total = 2750 euros vs the kit 2600 euros… For thé z7 you need to add one expensive xdf and a card reader ( tot = 150€) so 10% more than your kit but it s another World… and it just the price of the A7iv WITHOUT any lens… For me it s the best plan for 2022. Note that There are now a lot of z7 on second market due to z7ii… but with the last firmware 3.4 on z7 the upgrade to the z7ii is not mandatory at all.
I purchased mine as a kit with a D600. The D600 is far and gone, but this lens is still close at hand. I have the trilogy lenses and wouldn't hesitate taking this one due to the medium range zoom. Would I use it for paid gigs? Yes. Only the pixel peepers mind!
I recently bought the Sony 24-70 FE for my A6000. The 3.5 aperture CERTAINLY makes night photos a non-option. But after using my 35 1.8, it's a nice change!
While I do have two kit lenses, I hate them because one came with my camera and the other one I bought. Now I'm saving up money for pro FX lenses(such as non VR 24-70 f/2.8 and 14-24mm f/2.8), and two cameras, D850 and either Z6,Z6II, or Z7,Z7II.
Many have summed this up already but you may want to swap for a prime 2.8 lens if you're doing portraits otherwise, I have had this lens on my D700/D610/D810 and now the D750 since the lens came out in 2010 I think it was.
I have clicked some of my best photos with this lens. When I bought it , it was not sold as kit lens and the price in Dubai was equal to 1700 US $ dollars.
Sony 18-105 f4 g lens that I use is very similar with the exception being the the barrel does not extend so it looks a bit more professional. It is my "kit lens" and does most things. I tend to stick to my trust sigma 30mm f1.4 for every day photography.
I picked up an older canon 24-85 for much of the same reasons you mentioned in this video. At 3.5 to 4.5 it’s variable aperture but not to bad considering it’s sub 100 dollar price tag
I have a Nikon d 7100 and just recently bought a 18-105 after reading quite a few comments on it. I know it is not a kit lens but from what I have seen from it so far it does pretty well. This looks like it will be my main go to lens for a while. I imagine you have used this lens so what is your take on it? Do you think it is the way to go for a walk around general lens
Kit lenses are underrated... I want to buy one of those fixed aperture kit lenses, but they're quite expensive here... But yes loving the 18-135 kit lens (canon), that too more than the 50mm f1.8
Punk_69 Maybe you should try buying used lenses. B&h have great prices and I trust their rating. So far I have bought 3 used lenses and I am very happy.
I got one Nikon refurbished for $559 like new condition. I love it and knew I would since I have the DX equivalent 16-80 2.8/4 for my D500. Use this on the D3s and for a while the D850 until I sold it realizing I really didn’t need it since I already had the D500 & D3s. Just to much money tied up in a camera I wanted more than needed.
@@shahrulothman9302 no one cares about leica. They are over price branding. If you want to pay 10x too much for a camera buy a leica. There build and image quality difference doesn't reflect the pricing. Fuji>leica without a doubt
I think camera companies are all doing great at making usable kit lenses these days. Canon's EOS R/RP both come with a 24-105 f4, even their full frame dslrs are coming with one, Nikon has a 24 - 105 f4 and the 24 - 120, Fuji has 18 - 55 f2.8, or the 16 - 80 f4...however, lots of people saying Fuji 18 - 55 2.8-4 is best...sure, it is, on a crop sensor camera. But it is also important to bear in mind that 2.8 on a crop sensor is equivalent to f4 on full frame, in terms of DoF. So you're technically not getting anything more than what you'd get with an f4 lens on FF, except maybe a stop of light at most, which considering that FF handles high ISO better anyway, is negligible. That being said, it is still the best first lens for a Fuji system imo though, great cost to quality ratio.
ITS A PLEASANT LENS AND WILL SATISFY YOU MOST THE TIMES WHEN YOU WANT A LIGHT BAG, i FOUND IT OUT ON MY LAST TRIP WHEN MY PRIME LENSES WEIGHT FRIGHTENED ME, ON TRAVEL YOU PREFER TO HAVE LIGHTER BOKET AND HAVE A CLEARER BACKGROUND WHATEVER IT IS. SO F4 AND RANGE IS PERFECT TO TAKE IT ALONG WITH A 50MM F1.4 OR 1.8 IN CASE YOU NEEDED, FOR ME THAT WAS PERFECT PACK. THANKS
Been looking for a mid-range zoom for a bit now, was considering the 24-70 2.8, but then saw this one for about half the price used (less than $500), so just made the purchase this morning. Looking forward to trying it out on my d750!
@@blvdnights5097 I've just gotten back from my first trip testing with it. I haven't seen my shots on a big screen yet, but the utility factor was amazing after jumping between a 18-35 and a 100-300 for a couple years. On the camera screen things looked good, so I'm hopeful for good results.
Being 8 years in covering events, I've trade in my 24-70 to this lens with a big smile and a happy shoulder. HAHA Don't forget mentioning the extra space you have in your bag. 24-120 is all you need!
I think the lumix 14-42mm is one the best kit lens it’s really sharp and because it’s a micro four thirds sensor everything is cropped by 2 so basically all the lens are really compact.
I have Nikon d5600 and I'm trying to get good lenses and that seems to be a good all arounder. Always looking for your info since you mainly shoot nikon I always have to hear what you have to say. Thx for the info Evan
I have commented many times on RUclips videos about this lens. It is an extraordinary kit lens. I have the holy trinity of lenses for my Nikon d750, but rarely use them. This is my go to lens. The vibration reduction is outstanding. Rarely get a shot out of focus. I see where they brag about th Fuji 18-55 f2.8-4, and I'm sure it is a good kit lens, but has nowhere the range of the Nikon 24-120. You can't go wrong with this lens if you have a Nikon camera. I bought mine used for $500, because the guy who sold it didn't want a kit lens. He thinks like a lot of people that kit lenses are not very good. That's the main reason you will see them on the internet selling for a lower price.
i was thinking to replace my 16-50mm Kit lens cause it have a scratch, i am confused why people choose the afs 24-70mm f2.8 lens over the 24-120mm f4 although this lens offer more features than the 24-70 beside the 2.8 aperture .Can you share your review and choose which one better for me? Thank you
I just bought it refurbished for $650. I have many better lenses, but I'm not sure they're as versatile so for the price I thought it was worth a try. Waiting for it to arrive, we'll see. Thanks for the no nonsense nice review video.
I own the excellent D780 and I am trading my Nikon 28-300 in for a used Nikon 24-120 F/4. The 28-300 has been a disappointment with lack of sharpness and not great VR. My D780 deserves better.
I have a D780 as well, did have to sell pretty much all my lenses along with my previous body (D5200) to even get it. So that means I have no lens yet and I have this new body for over 2 months now. What kind of all-rounder can you advice for me that isn't breaking the bank? I did take a look at these 2 lenses so far: - Sigma 17-50mm - f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM - Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
Don’t buy a DX zoom to put on your FX D780. If you’ve already got a DX lens it works in DX-crop mode but since you’ve invested in an FX camera any new lens you buy should also be an FX lens.
A big reason why it's such a great lens that people don't understand is that it's has "N" coated optics. It makes a difference and l will shoot any Nikon lens with that coating.
i used it on my d750 almost exclusively, tried to go for a viewing of 35mmf2d and it couldnt compare at all with this kit lens, this lens has better sharpness better contrast even when both at f4
Your best bet would be look for a used copy. Recently they were purchased for $350->$500 on eBay so look around…be patient and you should be able to find a good one for the right price.
I am using the old AF 28-85 3,5-4,5 on my D750, which is a great standard zoom. Certainly, it has no vr, but I bought it for only 60,- and it is a great value for that money!

Got one with a D750. It's a great kit lens. 24 - 120 is very useful range.
I used this lens with my d750. It's soo good and a great swiss army lens and it's been around a bit.
I love the D780 with the kit lens. I couldn't pass on the price and it is my walking around lens. Great!
True. Go to lens. In crop mode it is 180mm. Sharpness begin at 5.6. Best quality at f8.
Using this lens for years. I love it so much. 🧡
i need raw pic with this lens please
A lot of kit lenses can do a pretty good job (for beginners but also for advanced photo- and videographers).I am still totally happy with my a6400 kit lens.
But your kit lens is obviously another level!
I really enjoyed this video, keep up the great work and stay safe :)
I’ve herd the 6400 is a great camera!!
@@RanftEvan I just love it! I came from the 6000 over the 6300 to now the 6400. Especially the low light performance is just great!
Best kit lens? Fuji 18-55.
Never used it but herd good stuff!
Got it, used it today in Edinburgh love it alot! ;D so compact!
Totally agree! I’m a Nikon user for 7 years (Work) and just add Fuji to be my personal camera and I was really surprised with the construction and sharpness of the 18-55 2.8 🔥
@H3lt3r Sk3lt3r The 16-55 is not a Fuji Kit lens, please check the 18-55mm 2.8 XF, it has OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) BEST KIT LENS EVER.
@H3lt3r Sk3lt3r We are talking of common KIT LESES right? BTW smaller apertures doesn't mean bad optical quality image hahaha :P You are welcome to visit my work to check if it has the required quality. Peace!

Still rocking the 24-70 f4 S on my Z6 still and I can't fault it! (Wouldn't mind that extra 120mm reach however)
Good kit & combination.
It's one of the lenses I'm thinking about adding to my collection. Been seeing barely used ones on ebay for $300-400
No kit lens here, but I do love my only zoom, the 24-70VR. Also, I’m glad you shoot Nikon. It’s nice to watch someone who still loves the ecosystem.
WHAT IS THIS BUILDING PLEASE THAT'S GORGEOUS
I have clicked some of my best photos with this lens. When I bought it , it was not sold as kit lens and the price in Dubai was equal to 1700 US $ dollars.
A very fine optic and great value used as the used price is based on the fact that it cost $500 with the camera rather than $1000 separately!
for landscape work this is the only lens you really need. Ultrawides and super telephotos are great, if you can be bothered to carry them with you.
Sony 18-105 f4 g lens that I use is very similar with the exception being the the barrel does not extend so it looks a bit more professional. It is my "kit lens" and does most things. I tend to stick to my trust sigma 30mm f1.4 for every day photography.
I agree great lens. Bought it with the D750. I still missing it
Wish Nikon would update that lens which has 12 year old VRII. Bought one with my D750 6 years ago. I now use a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2.
I picked up an older canon 24-85 for much of the same reasons you mentioned in this video. At 3.5 to 4.5 it’s variable aperture but not to bad considering it’s sub 100 dollar price tag
Where is the first scene? That looks insane!
Probably a great time to shoot in NYC with a minimum of crowd traffic... but where do you find a place to eat or, uh, need some of that rarity (tp!)
*Ken Rockwell has left the chat.
Why?
@@johnhal1 not sure. KR actually had positive things to say about this lens.
The Canon RF 24-105mm F4 is the kit lens I have for the EOS R which is a L lens and it’s very good!
It’s an oldie but still a goodie 👍🏽👍🏽
Yes!
I think the king of kit lens is fuji 18-55 f2.8-4 you dont get that low aperture on any other kit lens..
True. But that's an Apsc system so F4 on an FX system is close to F2.8 on Apsc (depending on focal length). VR is better on the Fuji though
Exactly! Without a doubt.
@@shahrulothman9302 no one cares about leica. They are over price branding. If you want to pay 10x too much for a camera buy a leica. There build and image quality difference doesn't reflect the pricing. Fuji>leica without a doubt
@@michaelmercado1953 or do whatever tht makes u happy😂
i got a 10-1000mm constant f/0,5 on my sensorless NiCaSo camera, best kitlens ever!
would you recommend for lower light concert photography?
Going to get this lens when I get the Nikon d750
Smart move. I have that combination and love it.
Nikon!!!! :) That was awesome, thanks! I'm getting the Z version.
THANKS
I have been shooting with this lens and love it. 24 -70 maybe better, but does not focal range.
Been looking for a mid-range zoom for a bit now, was considering the 24-70 2.8, but then saw this one for about half the price used (less than $500), so just made the purchase this morning. Looking forward to trying it out on my d750!
How do you like it? I have a d700
Hii Evan, awesome video. I just want to report that your studio light link in the description does not work. Have a great day mate!
Being 8 years in covering events, I've trade in my 24-70 to this lens with a big smile and a happy shoulder. HAHA
Don't forget mentioning the extra space you have in your bag. 24-120 is all you need!
24-120 is really great lens!
You want the best image quality zoom lens for your D5600 get the 24-85mm 3.5-4.5G not D series!. It's the best short of buying a 24-70 2.8!.
Thank you
This lens was not a kit lens originally. It was introduced in 2010 for $1300.00. And still a great lens.
I just bought it refurbished for $650. I have many better lenses, but I'm not sure they're as versatile so for the price I thought it was worth a try. Waiting for it to arrive, we'll see. Thanks for the no nonsense nice review video.
It's definitely a steal at that price.
Yeah I’m really glad I got it with the 780!
Hi, Evan thanks for all the great videos do you find it better than the fuji 18-55 kit kens or have you used that one cheers :)
Mine is a bit soft at F4. Move to F 4.5 and it sharpens right up.
At which focal length 🤔 (wide or tele)?
@@estoylisto it’s been a while because I got a 24-70 that’s kind of taken over, but I think it was more towards the tele end.
Should i buy this? I need a lense for maximum range for personal photography and natutre.
lol in fact zoom lenses with a fixed aperture have more moving parts than others with variable aperture.
This is absolutely true
There is more moving parts in constant aperture lenses.
I own the excellent D780 and I am trading my Nikon 28-300 in for a used Nikon 24-120 F/4. The 28-300 has been a disappointment with lack of sharpness and not great VR. My D780 deserves better.
I use my kit lens for video as well. It's an older kit lens so it's as good as yours but it gets the job done.
What you think about the 18-140mm? Or the 55-200mm?
Fuji 18-55 OIS F2.8-4
Best Kit I’ve used to date!
Doesn't have the range of the 24-120, but I'm sure it is a good lens. Fuji is a good brand.
I bought this open box for $550 and it's probably my most used lens ever!
Coming from a xf18-55mm those are fighting words
Eh, I've had two copies of the fuji 18-55 and haven't been impressed with either. I've heard the same about the Nikon 24-120 (copy variation)
I tototally agree. I would not pay $1000.00 for an F4 zoom lens. But I would pay $500.00 if it came with a new camera.
Thanks, bro!
I have a D780 as well, did have to sell pretty much all my lenses along with my previous body (D5200) to even get it. So that means I have no lens yet and I have this new body for over 2 months now. What kind of all-rounder can you advice for me that isn't breaking the bank?
I did take a look at these 2 lenses so far:
- Sigma 17-50mm - f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM
- Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
Get a prime lens just to start you off, 35 1.8 maybe as it's very very cheap
The $200 Nikkor 50mm 1.8 G is an FX lens usable for most anything
Don’t buy a DX zoom to put on your FX D780. If you’ve already got a DX lens it works in DX-crop mode but since you’ve invested in an FX camera any new lens you buy should also be an FX lens.
ayye Nikon gang💪🏻
💯
Gang? Lmfao. First World sentence.
Hi! How did you color grade the New York Video and which setting did you use?
Hi! How is the focus ring for manual focus on video?
Thanks Evan great review. I don't own a zoom but I think on this camera it makes sense to buy.
Using this with my D750, but sadly I'm not a fan of the distortion.
I bought this lens for 230€. It looks and works like new.
What lens should one buy if its not value for money for the one buying at retail price ?
Your best bet would be look for a used copy. Recently they were purchased for $350->$500 on eBay so look around…be patient and you should be able to find a good one for the right price.
can I use on Z body with FTZ?
I am using the old AF 28-85 3,5-4,5 on my D750, which is a great standard zoom. Certainly, it has no vr, but I bought it for only 60,- and it is a great value for that money!
Best kit Lens for Nikon d7500 ?
18-140mm is the best?
