Acer palmatum 'Hana Matoi 'with brilliant pink new leaves is a standout Weeping Dwarf Japanese Maple. The foliage does fade to green to burgundy as it ages, however in spring to early summer it makes a brilliant specimen plant for colour alone.
Introduced by Yutaka Tanaka of Tsukasa Nursery in Japan, the full name is Acer palmate dissectum 'Hana Matoi' and the foliage is very finely dissected. Grow it in the garden or in a container and remember the amount of sun it receives wiil influence the colour of the foliage.
How tall does this Japanese Maple get ?
As with most dwarf Japanese Maples this is a grafted specimen, so ours is grafted at around 1m (3ft) and will never get much taller than that.
For us it has proved to be a heat tolerant and very hardy little tree.. Usually sold as low growing weeping tree, sometimes as a standard, it prefers a sunny position, a humus rich soil and some moisture through summer.
What are the origins of Hana Matoi?
Hana matoi is a sport of Toyama nishiki a Japanese Maple with leaf tones of greens, pinks, and creams. Hana matoi ramps up the pinks especially when grown in good sun, in shaded areas the tones are more on the cream and green with less pronounced pink.
Toyama nishiki itself is a variegated form Toyama, a red dissectum type. AND the Japanese word Nishiki meaans 'broacade'.
