Hello everyone! We have been getting a lot of comments and questions about why Nils & Bianca aren't dancing with each other in this video. So I wanted to explain a bit more about the format of this competition. This format is called "Draw" or "Luck of the Draw" or sometimes "Mix & Match" (formally called "Jack & Jill"). In this type of competition dancers are assigned randomly chosen partners and the rules, as stated, prohibit competitors from dancing with their "regular" partner; one that they dance and/or have competed with in a choreographed routine in the last 4 years (read more here: www.ilhc.com/in-person-competitions/#lindy-hop-draw).
The goal is to have a true social dance competition where leaders are leading and followers are following a fully improvised dance.
So if you were wondering why Nils & Bianca aren't dancing together in this video that is why. They were both at the event and did compete together twice in the following events:

So so so good. No choreographed dance coud be better. I think this is the essence of the dance: spontaneous communication, following the music and a lot of fun.
I feel like this dance was lead by both of them in the most amazing way! I’m mesmerized!
Probably all choreographed and not really lead and followed (but not sure).
@@davidziff2591 This is a “Draw” meaning partners are selected at random minutes before the dancing began. The format is specifically designed to prevent competitors from choreographing their performance.
@@ILHC Yes, you're right about that. I hadn't figured that out.. Definitely lead and followed/improvised. I think what's happening here is that he's giving her plenty of room to dance on her own without his lead. There are 4 or 5 places where she has two measures more or less on her own.
@@ILHC Yes, but. . .(& I'm speaking from the perspective of a westie who has attended many similar events & watched hundreds of them on YT), at this level, all of these leaders/followers have danced w/ each other (in such events and socially) zillions of times "on the circuit" & they know everyone's moves, strengths, preferences, etc. very well.

Omg I never comment on freakn RUclips videos. This dance was so good. The music was such a match for them and they were a match for each other’s fun loving goofy style. I feel like some couples really get the short end of the stick with the song (not swingin enough), but they are a blast to watch.
I was thinking the same thing - "short end of the stick" with music selection. Bianca and Felix are excellent dancers with excellent improvisation skills so them to drawn together make a formidable pair to win the competition. Their luck is further enhanced with music, I think, that compliments their dance style and repertoir of dance moves.
Some learn to dance, others are born for it.

Ohooo, I am a big fan of Bianca and Lars, but honestly, this guy is great, too. He was so completly relaxed, capable and cool, they make a good dancing couple together.

OMG! What a top class field of participants! Everyone is extraordinarily top class good! I was lucky enough to be taught at several of them at festivals. My Lindy Hop skills grew enormously as a result.

Okay, ich schreib das jetzt auf Deutsch: Bianca und Nils sind meine absoluten Favoriten. Aber diese Idee mit den wechselnden Partnern finde ich genial. Denn da kann man sehen, wie gut die einzelnen Tänzerinnen und Tänzer wirklich sind. Ich kenne das aus eigener Erfahrung und kann nur sagen, dass es immer wieder sehr spannend sein kann, wenn man sich auf einer Boogie- oder sonstigen Tanzveranstaltung teilweise mit bis zu 8 verschiedenen Tanzpartnerinnen amüsieren durfte.😉😉😉

I am a newcomer so I have never seen Bianca with Nils. Seeing her first with Felix was just mesmerizing, both of them having fun, "Yes-And"ing each other in this improv dance. They seem to know the music although I would think it is the first time they're hearing it because in this event I thought the dancers are with a random-picked partner not their usual partner, and the music is also supposed to be luck of the draw.

What defines Lindy Hop from other swing type dances. I’m not a dancer, but love watching it and am curious.
It is mainly the music that separates the different styles. The music style of the different eras have a great influence on how the character of the swing dance. Lindy hop is typically danced to 1920s-1940s Jazz/Swing-music. The modern Lindy Hop dancers takes a lot of inspiration from the dancers from this time period.

Nice to see Bianca with another partner. Nils seems to be all about him, and this time it's easier to see more of Bianca's talent with a different partner.
In the career of Nil's an Bianca, one of their trade-mark methods to choreography is to always start the first bar or two with an into, as seen in this dance here.
Bianca’s partner is not Nils in this dance.
I sincerely hope that the two are still a dance couple.

These dancers picked partners out of hats but once that was done, looks like they had a chance to rehearse! Am I wrong?
This was wonderful.
They did not have a chance to rehearse in a traditional sense but they did have a “warm-up” song with their chosen partner.
@@ILHC Do they know what music they will be dancing to beforehand?
That's my thoughts too. It was so good, I'd say they had a half day on rehearsals.
They do not know who they are partnering with until moments before they dance, nor do they know what music will be played until it the band starts playing.
