Theory:
Before Starlight’s deposition, she didn’t let anyone name the village because, if it did have a name, somepony would obviously deserve some credit for naming the town. This would, in her mind, elevate that one pony slightly above the others and undermine her whole pseudo-Marxist regime.
When individualism (is that the right word?) ended up winning out anyway, the village carried on namelessly because that’s just what everyone was used to.
If you hadn't written "Theory" next to that, I would've just taken it as a fact.
I also kind of assumed it this way.
Starlight condems being special, so not even the town gets anything special, like a name. It makes me wonder if she eventually would have made names forbidden in the village.

Okay, let me tell something. The thing about the cult leaders is that they often have more priviledge, better things and live quite a normal life, in contrary to their followers. No, it's not enough to spark rebellion if people are brainwashed enough.
This episode did an amazing job in portraying a cult, and that's the scariest thing about it.

I just counted, there are *exactly* 100 cutie marks in the vault.
A grid of 8 × 14, equals 112 spaces. Apart from the 6 adjacent free spaces in the center, there are 6 more free slots, so 12 empty ones in total.
But is that consistant each time the Vault appears on screen, and are every single cutie mark in the exact same spot each time the vault appears on screen too? THAT is the real question!

@jirodyne: I actually just rewatched the scene and check every occurence of the vault, and amazingly, the answer is yes - with a little twist! The arrangement of the cutie marks is always the same, the holes are consistent, and the CMs of the mane 6 are also placed correctly. However, in two shots, the vault was cut off a bit. In one frame, the rightmost column is missing; in another, the two uppermost rows are missing. They are cut off not by the edge of the video but the frame of the vault, so there's a little continuity error. But I'm still amazed the arrangement was consistent.
I wonder, if a pony's mark was removed, but they weren't equalized, would it be possible for them to earn a different cutie mark?

I think the real sin here is that Pinkie and Fluttershy have their levels of empathy totally switched here. Normally Pinkie is the one who's totally oblivious to smiles being faked, like in Applebucking Season when she assumed AJ was fine, or at her party in Party of One where she couldn't tell that the party wasn't fun for her friends (Rarity being grossed out by the punch comes to mind). Just last season she couldn't tell her friends weren't having a fun time with Maud until they told her.
Meanwhile Fluttershy is able to tell that Rainbow is actually nervous in Sonic Rainboom even though she was acting cocky. She's able to see through Discords veneer of whimsy to see the vulnerability that none of her friends can. She's normally hypersensitive to being watched and being the subject of social obligation. Compare this episode to when she first meets Twilight, who is putting on a forced smile herself. Granted, they've both have grown a lot over time, but this is a total 180.
I would argue that a large proportion of the smiles aren't that fake. A lot of the village do genuinely seem to enjoy their current situation, which is why I am fine with Fluttershy missing it. I don't really have an argument for Pinkie, but my best theory would be Pinkie not liking them based on the matching marks or them feeling odd to her senses and just blaming it on the 'fake smiles'.
Good point! It seems like everyone, even the show itself, forgets that Starlight's people weren't all just brainwashed. Anxiety about Cutie Marks is literally the whole reason that the CMC exists, and she was giving ponies a solution to that before they knew how to. An extreme, impulsive solution, but a solution her people believed in. Pinkie Pie Sense is a good thought too, although I'm not sure if it holds up.
Pinkie was written well in this episode. Fluttershy was not. It has been established before that Pinkie Pie, despite acting silly, is extremely intelligent. Some writers forget that and right her like an idiot. Fluttershy on the other hand is just all over the place.

Fluttershy's "empathy" is extremely inconsistent, it appears to be based on the particular writer's interpretation of Fluttershy's character, and I don't agree with your interpretation for most of it. I don't recall what happened Sonic Rainboom (though looking at the transcript you appear to be incorrect, it was RARITY who commented on Rainbow Dash appearing nervous, but it wouldn't mean much either way as Fluttershy knows Rainbow Dash better than the rest), but your other examples are questionable. I interpret what went down in Keep Calm and Flutter On completely differently. She didn't see any vulnerability, she was just being kind as it's her nature, she interpreted his behavior as generously as she could, and then put her hoof down when he pushed her too far. She didn't manipulate him, it just happened to work as it was the right thing to do. With the first episode, she wasn't seeing seeing through Twilight's fake smile, she was demonstrating selective mutism after Twilight startled her and went too quickly. That's not empathy of any sort, it's just anxiety, and it went away once she saw Spike. The only episode I recall that explicitly confirmed confirmed any reading powers is Sounds of Silence, but her ability is questionable as it's only demonstrated with animals and there the kirin did in fact express emotion, it's just not expressed in the typical manner.
One thing that bugs me about this two-parter: Starlight has successfully detained the Mane Six, including Princess Twilight, and plans on keeping them here forever as brainwashed cult members.
Did she not think of the potential WAR that could happen should Celestia and Luna realise Twilight's gone missing? Which wouldn't be that long, considering Spike tends to worry and can quickly contact them?
In at least one alternate timeline, Fluttershy failed to free herself and her friends, leading to Our Town being magically bombarded and Starlight executed after a few days; the Mane Six spent months recovering from the mental torture.

The recolored Starlight who is probably mind controlling the actual Starlight like a puppet to do her evil bidding is apparently the real villain of this town, also, Fluttershy's sudden emotion changes are even more drastic than the manic Pinkie Pie.

You know, keeping a Princess captive against her will is a crime, and so is assaulting her and removing her sense of identity; if Starlight had managed to avoid the water bucket, and keep these six restrained, the other three Princesses would eventually notice Twilight's missing, go searching for her and her friends, and then imprison Starlight in Tartarus.
Maybe attacking a Princess wasn't the best idea Starlight had.

They can't get a call while they're already out on one. If anything, the map would hold all calls until the active one is solved and they return to it. Can't solve the problem without your CM, so that solves that.

Cinemare Sins are all fun and games, but no one ever seems to notice the bizarre, unstructured and senseless concept of trains in this show. Like seriously, there's ONE rail, where trains magically appear from both directions and not collide into eachother. Also, when the mane six hop of the train in this episodek, the rail literally stops in the middle of nowhere and starts moving backwards after the passengers get out.

At 1:28 when Pinkie said "Something is rotten in... whatever name of the village we're in right now." It sounded like she shouted. I'm surprised that no one heard that because of small it is.
Hasbro could not find a good name for the village, so it remained without 😂
So, while rewatching this episode on Netflix, I realised that while they are in the room, they act less and less like themselves. ( no duh )
But, if Pinkie's equal mark makes her less optimistic, shouldn't the rest be acting how they did back when Discord trapped them in the maze?
If the other pegisi in Starlight's cult can fly, why can't Fluttershy or Dash, or even Twilight simply fly away and get help outside the town?
And yes, Dash can indeed still fly away. If Dash got her cutie mark from creating a Sonic Rainboom and being fast, she only actually got her cutie mark from creating a Sonic Rainboom, and for being faster than the average pegisi. Even then, Dash can still fly away, and even if she got her cutie mark taken away keeping her from being fast, she could still fly away, it would just slow her down, and keep her flying like an average pegisi.

Thanks to the fact that I always pay attention to the actual words being said in the songs, it wasn’t starlight saying “ everyone who comes here never wants to leave why should you be any different.” Was not the big red flag to me it was. “ you can’t have a nightmare, if you never dream.”
My headcanon is that Double Diamond have perfect memory. It adds to his character and is actually implied by canon. I also find it awkward that the studio felt that they need to repeat mane 6 names just so that so people would still remember them after the long hiatus.

I always remind myself how terrifying Starlight Glimmer was. But, at the same time, she's such a woobie and sweet character in the later seasons. It never stops being jarring from seeing the transition between a former tyrant to a character that's so admired. Welp, onto the next second parter next month! XD :D

Because twilight is an alicorn part unicorn if she knew shield magic she obviously knew how to open the vault...but it shows them having to throw the staff at the vault when twilight could simply use her magic to open it...

So you know how every pony besides Starlight are all dull in color, cause they lost there Cutie Marks, so it makes sense that Starlight still has her Cutie Mark, she is the same color as Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Flutter Shy, and Twilight Sparkle, the Mane 6. Who have their Cutie Marks, and when the Mane 6 loose their Cutie Marks, she is only bright colored one, also in the song "In Our Town" Starlight says "No one is Superior" and does the action of putting a random pony's hair into braids, however later on does nothing about fixing her OWN hair into braid, nor Flutter Shy's hair, when she apparently "crossed over".
