Fun fact: Amongst the cards they were rifling through, one of them says "It was my fault. I should have known you didn't live in Aberdeen." This is in reference to the Fourth Doctor story "The Hand of Evil", which was Sara Jane Smith's last classic Who story. In it the Doctor, in taking Sara Jane home, didn't land in the London area, but dropped her off in Aberdeen, Scotland.
the guy playing her interpreter, Lun, also knows English sign language (I believe his sister in real life is deaf), that is why it looked so real. They were really signing.
Yeah, Sophie Stone was in a season of Shetland, where Steven Robertson (the guy who plays Pritchard) has a crush on her. I like her character in this show much more. His, not so much. :)
One thing that is a bit depressing is that Doctor Who thinks that profoundly deaf people of the 22nd century will still need to communicate via sign language through an interpreter; they'll be reliant on a whole other person just to speak. Not very sci-fi, is it?
I wasn't sure at the time but 'Under The Lake/Before The Flood' has just gone up and up in my estimation. It's definitely the Series 9 story that benefits the most from the 2-part format, allowing the time to create a set of characters that you really care about by the end.
This is actually one of my favourite episodes. The pacing is utter perfection, the level of intrigue continues to rise and the stakes only get higher and higher. It provides such a constant incline throughout that you can't help but be hooked.
The thing with series 9 two parters is they are incredible when watched back to back.... Series 9 is my favourite of the Capaldi era and part 2 raises the staes even higher.... a classics Base Under Seige story and I love it...cannot wait for more reactions to series 9
I really love this 2-parter for some reason. I feel like it encapsulates 12’s era in a nutshell with some intriguing plots and well-executed Gothic horror vibes. Loved the reaction!
fun fact: the actress who plays the deaf character is deaf in real life too I loved her character, she wasn't afraid of the Doctor and confronted him when necessary
Moral of the story - never investigate This is what happens when you mix the Gelth with the Waters of Mars Your concern for Clara’s behaviour has been noted Y’know, the music for this episode is awesome The Doctor makes a valid point with socks, smartphones and badgers... Ah apology cards, fitting for 12’s social awkwardness The episode is certainly more tension than development at this stage, but such is the nature of two parters 2 episodes ago I asked you to consider the Doctor, this time though - consider Beethoven
Really guys? Now an under water adventure is boring? The heck???? This reminded me a lot of the few stories i've watched of Classic Who, picks up the relationship between the Doctor and Clara (and shows something is a bit off with her). Plus, the cast great, loved the deaf leader and how it doesn't make her less qualified. Love me some simple adventures, with the Doctor just stumbling with the mistery. Nothing big. Series 9 was sooooo good.
I loved Clara's slow descent into "Being The Doctor" which eventually lead to the inevitable point that even the Doctor has to reach. ...you know...death. Then they had to ruin that. :(
ArlanKels yeah :( i really didn’t like what they did in hell bent AT ALL. especially Clara becoming the doctor, basically immortal and with a companion. who was also immortal.
@@williansouza8724 I personally hold to the idea that it's like in The Wedding of River Song: she can only put off her death for a short time before everything starts collapsing. I like to imagine she uses the diner to visit a couple of the universe's greatest sights, then goes home to her family to see them one last time, then off to die. Then Ashildr brings her body back to her family.
I find this 2-parter to be a great stand alone story, you could watch them whenever without really needing to follow the story arc. Well written story too, love it.
This is my favourite two parter of this series. The only one that works on almost every level. It's got a very slow burn, classic who feel to it too. I love that about it. I can't wait until the second part.
The scene with the cue cards is one of my favorite Capaldi scenes. He makes you believe that the Doctor really doesn't get it with regard to human customs. If I were to have one criticism of Matt Smith, it was that it usually felt like the Doctor knew what the proper human reaction was but chose to be silly. (Tennant, of course, knew the proper human response to every situation and could tell you the typical response of 1500 other species for that situation as well)
I love this two parter for its mystery, I didn’t know where the story went and I was along with the characters who were solving it with me. It doesn’t do any dumb tricks and it’s not an obvious answer and had me wondering where it was going. Just like the classic series did.
O'Donnel would have been a cool companion, she’s very “Big Finish” - Big Finish will often have there characters know of the Doctor or be a side character then come back as a full time companion
The first time I watched this episode didn't like it that much either but I revisited after watching the second part and I liked it much better once all the details made sense.
Adored this two-parter first time through, reminded me of the Russel T era, with an isolated location, a monster and a dwindling group of survivors for the Doctor to save.
Its ye olde base-under-siege time but I thought the ghosts were creepy and well realised. Also really warmed to the characters in this strong ensemble cast. A good set-up and very interested to see what you think of the next episode!
After the first two the third episode is bound to be a bit calmer but you did get the "duty of care" talk and I think that's the intro to his "social interactions cards" Clara made for him. Thanks for posting it sooner for us who are in the future a couple of hours. (Further Eest).
This was a very strong story. Not as good as the opener, but that opener is one of my all time favorites-- it was so good. But this story was quite good, too.
First DW reaction video in your 30's! You still look 25, don't worry. :D Love how the make use of sign language in this episode, the actress, deaf or not did a great job. :)
Wait, did the Doctor said his knowledge of sign language had been deleted? I remember reading that some 7th Doctor novels established that the Doctor can selectively delete some of his memories, mostly the ones he will not be needing for the foreseeable future.
Fun story I went to Comic-Con back in 2015 shortly after this episode was broadcast and Moffat along with other writers for the show where talking about the show, showing trailers and answers questions and cass (the deaf character) brought up by a young kid in a wheel chair and this is how that conversation went “I loved the deaf character you introduced and was wondering if you needed anyone in a wheelchair for the next episode” the audience then burst out laughing ending with Moffat shouting “that’s not a question that’s a job offer”...... maybe you had to be there for that to be funny at all ?
One thing I like about your reactions, is you're always fully engaged. I'd completely forgotten about this episode. Took me a minute to remember what it was about.
I really enjoy this episode, but only in connection with the second part, and I actually like the second part more. I like the slow build; there was so much action in the series opener, and this story gets a little bit more room to breathe, which I think is nice :).
I just realized watching this, and hopefully it'll be relevant when watching the next part. The guy helping translate was never allowed in so he never so the writing thus that's why the "ghost" doesn't kill him!
When it comes to series 9, it took a few viewings for me to actually like it. And the episodes that everyone seems to love, I don't (with the exception of "THAT episode"....I think everyone in Who fandom likes "that" one). I quite liked this 2-parter, it was a good old fashioned ghost story. But this is also when they start loudly telegraphing the main thrust of the season. Sometimes I wish DW was more subtle in its storytelling. There's no need to shout "THIS IS WHERE WE'RE GOING!" to the audience.
Why are "Doctor Who" fans so negative? Why is it so important to be this way? I mean in the comment section, especially this comment section. From the beginning of her "Doctor Who" journey, Sesskasays has been honest and accommodating with her channel. Why come here to be negative? I just don't get it.
I find that there are two kinds of fans, (not just for Doctor Who, but anything with a large fan base.) Fans who are actually fans of something and "fans" who are actually more like detractors. Before the series relaunched in 2005 I was a fan of the classic series and would encounter people who said they were fans of classic Who, but they hated everything that was made in the 80's and they wouldn't watch anything in black and white (which eliminated all of the 60's. And they didn't like the Pertwee era because of the Doctor being exiled to Earth, or disliking UNIT, or because too many of the stories were "message" stories and they didn't like the latter half of Tom Baker's run when Graham Williams was producer and the show became campy...So I would say, "So you basically like some episodes from two or three seasons out of twenty-six? If you dislike the majority of a series, in what way does that make you a fan! You're not really a fan of the Beatles if you love Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, but hate all of their other songs. With the revived series, some people only liked the Russell T Davies era, or liked Matt Smith, but not Peter Capaldi, but instead of being content with the era of the show which they enjoyed and moving on when they became disenchanted with it, they continue to hang around and sh** on it because it isn't what they want it to be. Similar stuff happens with the MCU movies and the Star Wars movies and Star Trek etc, etc. Doctor Who is like a shark, it has to keep constantly swimming forward to stay alive. The reason for it's longevity is that it is constantly evolving. When it debuted it alternated between science fiction stories and"historicals" (non sci-fi adventure stories set in different eras of history). During the Troughton era the historicals were phased out, the Pertwee era saw the Doctor exiled to Earth and affiliated with UNIT, the first half of Tom Baker's run phased out UNIT and the show adopted an element of gothic horror and so on and so on. Unfortunately while some people embrace change, others are resistant to it. Its the Yin and Yang of fandom.
Ok I'm reading through the comments on this video, and no one is being nasty or abusive. People are just stating their opinions. Some people like this story, some people don't like this story. Same goes for every other story. Everyone's opinion is valid. You're not a true fan if you force yourself to enjoy every single thing presented to you, and ignore any negative opinions. Fans are negative because they want and know that the show can be better.
Adam, thank you for the justification of bad behavior. This is part of the issue, how is complaining on a Reactor"s channel going to make the show better? I love how some of you have decided that you are the judge on what makes a "true fan", this attitude is the one, that I am speaking on.
I love season 9 cause they realize there mistakes and weak stories in season 8 and decided to freshen things up by putting two parters and taking advantage of the 12th doctor
Hey Jess, I don't know why this just popped into my head, but were you aware that Doctor Who used to hold annual concerts celebrating Murray Gold's wonderful Doctor Who compositions? They looked like so much fun. Here is a quick sample: ruclips.net/video/lyFmdI8LLT4/видео.html
I agree with you about this episode, Jess. It's not one of Twelve's most interesting episodes, but definitely not his worst. The final scene of this two-parter was chilling, though. The episode was above average and not Capaldi's worst. The previous two episodes of Season 9 as well as the final two episodes of Season 8 and the Christmas Special overshadowed this one. I look forward to seeing your reaction to the next episode.
I do find it aggravating that in a later season the doctor says there's no such thing as ghost again even though in this episode the doctor came to the conclusion that they are actually ghost
I love the idea of one of the Doctors companions getting too cocky and confident SPOILERS ******* ******* ******* and ultimately it costs her her life!
I have to agree with Jess; I do not find this the most memorable of episodes. This is quite surprising as it has lots of elements that should appeal. There is tension, a creepy antagonist (or group of antagonists) and a claustrophobic atmosphere reminiscent of the base under siege stories that were so popular during the Classic era in which I grew up. There are strong supporting characters and good performances all around but somehow it never really sparks for me. I've watched the story a few times but still never remember the plot or denouement until half way through the second part which suggests that either the story was not able to sustain my interest or I was not able to maintain my concentration--which may well amount to the same thing.

It wasn't revealed to be Aberdeen until School Reunion.
JJ_B true.
I forgot about this one, also I'm sure the actress doing sign language is actually deaf too. So it's cool that they did that.
jamie o'brien Yeah she is
the guy playing her interpreter, Lun, also knows English sign language (I believe his sister in real life is deaf), that is why it looked so real. They were really signing.
She did the best acting in this episode. Even better than Capaldi I'd say. GREAT two parter. Love it

I think this is one of the greatest ever 2 parters. I adore series 9 so much

That duty of care line though
“I’m really nervous for this guy...” Yeah, the writers made people actually worried for the characters, so refreshing!
I adore Capaldi. He's really grown with each season.
This is actually one of my favourite episodes. The pacing is utter perfection, the level of intrigue continues to rise and the stakes only get higher and higher. It provides such a constant incline throughout that you can't help but be hooked.
This was a great "base under siege" story
Also a base under sea.
Base under seage

I loved her character, she wasn't afraid of the Doctor and confronted him when necessary
Supposedly the Doctor didn't say "go ahead" in BSL, but rather "you're beautiful" in ASL. I'll mention another one in next time's recap.
I love love love these two episodes. Not just the story, but the characters. They were all great
This is the first episode since “The Unicorn and the Wasp” not to have the sonic screwdriver in it
Wow
The Stolen Earth? But the statement still stands regardless.
It's got those stupid sunglasses in it though.
James stupid? i like them lol
Moral of the story - never investigate
This is what happens when you mix the Gelth with the Waters of Mars
Your concern for Clara’s behaviour has been noted
Y’know, the music for this episode is awesome
The Doctor makes a valid point with socks, smartphones and badgers...
Ah apology cards, fitting for 12’s social awkwardness
The episode is certainly more tension than development at this stage, but such is the nature of two parters
2 episodes ago I asked you to consider the Doctor, this time though - consider Beethoven
This 2 parter is one of my most favorites of this season of favorites. It really tics a lot of boxes, IMHO.
Elizabeth Salvatore Agree. You can't beat a good, old fashioned 'base under siege' story.

The cards!
This is what I love about this doctor his curiosity to know everything and how open minded he is
I find this 2-parter to be a great stand alone story, you could watch them whenever without really needing to follow the story arc. Well written story too, love it.

This episode really reminded me of Classic Who.
Has a late Pertwee/early Baker vibe in parts.
No Mirrka though...
I think that's why I like it
Amira betts: Good tips. Thank you. I was already followed Avalon, but I hadn't heard of Petrova before. Appreciate it. :)
The scene with the cue cards is one of my favorite Capaldi scenes. He makes you believe that the Doctor really doesn't get it with regard to human customs. I know! It would've been so cool to have a fan-girl as a full time companion.
I love in the next one when she goes "It’sbiggerontheinsideIt’sbiggerontheinsideIt’sbiggerontheinside!" Jumping up and down
Another fantastic two parter in the best series of Doctor Who.
The first time I watched this episode didn't like it that much either but I revisited after watching the second part and I liked it much better once all the details made sense.
Victor Granados I think most of this season is much better on a second watch.
a lot of things are more deep and subtle in season 9 than it looks at the 1st sight. I realize it makes a lot of 2 part in the season 9
This is one of my favourite two parters, if not for the entire season. Thank you for your reaction!
Adored this two-parter first time through, reminded me of the Russel T era, with an isolated location, a monster and a dwindling group of survivors for the Doctor to save.
Aidan's Channel These are the “this is where all the shit can REALLY get fucked up...” episodes.

This my 2nd favorite Capaldi story. Love the hoodie and tee combo. Outstanding cast and great concept. O'donnel would have been a great companion.
Cannot believe i forgot this one, i love this two parter so tense and brilliant in both halves
I need to hurry home and watch this aaah I don't know why but I really love this story
Saaaaame
The cards moment is one of my favourite 12th Doctor and Clara bits.
It's a fun episode, creepy, mysterious, cool characters, and just solid work.
I love this episode. It's very haunting and creepy and perfectly Doctor Who. It's almost classic Doctor Who in a way.
This was a very strong story. Not as good as the opener, but that opener is one of my all time favorites-- it was so good. But this story was quite good, too.

This episode reminded me heavily of The Impossible Planet!
Wait until the second part:). It'll mess with your head in that way only Dr Who can. And the pre credit bit is wonderful....
Wait, did the Doctor said his knowledge of sign language had been deleted? I remember reading that some 7th Doctor novels established that the Doctor can selectively delete some of his memories, mostly the ones he will not be needing for the foreseeable future.
i love the version of the theme song in the next episode. i downloaded it as a ringtone from zedge
7:56 "I'm very sorry for your loss. I'll do all I can to solve the death of your friend/family member/pet"
One of the best line ever!
Episodes like this are one of my favourites because they are very small and contained which works for the ghosts as villains

I love this first part. Didn't like the 2nd part as much but it was still good.
I *love* the cards hahaha
I always felt Capaldi`s Doctor was like a grandfather to Clara, and he felt connected to her like he was Susan
I just realized watching this, and hopefully it'll be relevant when watching the next part. The guy helping translate was never allowed in so he never so the writing thus that's why the "ghost" doesn't kill him!

So this is basically the dr who adventure game “Shadows of the Vashta Nerada” but with ghosts instead
9 is full of two parter's weirdly enough.
jacob hogan Season theme: The Hybrid. The two part episodes mesh with that, for what is a hybrid if not something two parts?
I think it is safe to say what you will LOVE about the next episode. [Insert guitar emoji thingy]
duty of care which he takes very seriously very very seriously incredibly seriously unbelievably seriously beyond all words SERIOUSLY
I was watching other vids but this came up in my recommends. This comes first I’ll watch the other vid later
Series 10 still has my personal favourite "Ghost"! ;-)
For me, this episode is top ten material (of new Who anyway).
This is where Clara starts to go "native" on the doc and taken more risks.

When the ghosts was chasing, they should have played scooby-doo chase music.
How can you say you liked any of the first two parter more when there was that snake guy? Have you repressed that memory already? ;-)

TARDIS: another is going to bite the dust
I love season 9 cause they realize there mistakes and weak stories in season 8 and decided to freshen things up by putting two parters and taking advantage of the 12th doctor
Definitely a high point for series 9 (the next few aren’t the best but it definitely picks up)
Clara's outfit game is on Point this season.
The second part is more intense than the opener.
Doctor BOO!
Before I forget Happy Belated Birthday First. Secondly the ending of the season WILL break your heart. That's all I'm going to say

Really? IMO, if it wasn't for Heaven Sent, this would be the best story of Series 9. The opening two parter is mediocre at best.
one of my favorite episodes 👍
You would be a short term companion, understandably so
I do find it aggravating that in a later season the doctor says there's no such thing as ghost again even though in this episode the doctor came to the conclusion that they are actually ghost
I love your channel..
I love the idea of one of the Doctors companions getting too cocky and confident

Fantastic vid jess keep up the amazing work
So disappointed you didn't really enjoy this one. I thought as it has a great ensemble cast you'd really like it. Oh well.
I think the crew of the base are a bit dull, actually. Apart from O'Donnell, who's lovely.
My favorite peter capali
Love it
Have you noticed that the chain " mohanad toubasi " is uploading your videos?
I loved this reactions. You may have low views because it never notified me and it may do that to others. I prefered this 2 parter a bit more.
Here come the ghosts
They're not ghosts, they're metal men! Argh!
I lost it at the cue cards, and in my opinion, this is one of the few 2-parters where the second part actually measures up to expectations.
Don’t think I’ve watched this two parter since it aired 😂
Ahh. You missed first light last night.
I love the second part
You should do a doctor who Q&A
I have to agree with Jess; I do not find this the most memorable of episodes.
Fires of Pompeii
React to Cobra Kai (the Karate Kid sequel)! It's amazing
Yessss!!!!
Not the best but still fun and interesting.
Second part is better
React to the theme song in the next episode.
