I started with a shop vac and the Dustopper from HD. I bought a reducer to go on my table saw, which has a 4" port. It worked but it wasn't the best, to be sure. I got COVID in Dec '20 and a couple of months after getting over it, I noticed I was really sensitive to fine dust. I would wear my mask at the table saw but even after taking it off over at my bench, I could still feel the effects of the fine dust. I know I needed to upgrade. I bought an anemometer and measure what I was getting from my set up and wow, that was an eye opener. At the inlet of the shop vac (a Ridgid 12-gal model), I got 180 cfm. Not too bad. But when you connect the Dustopper and all the hoses, I was only getting about 80 cfm at the table saw. Quite inadequate. I ended up purchasing the Dust Right 750 mobile dust collector and man, what a difference. Not only does it get more of the dust out of my table saw but the 3 micron cartridge filter really does a nice job of keeping the finer particles out of the air. My wife's car would always have a nice layer of dust on it when I used my vacuum and Dustopper set up. Now, there's hardly ever any dust on the car, and in both cases, I always had the cart between my table saw and the car. One tip if one must use a shop vac with a separator of some type, get a HEPA filter and bag for the vacuum. Even though I don't use my vacuum and Dustopper on my table saw, when I do use it for sanding or to clean up and what not, there is nothing detectable coming out of the exhaust on the vacuum. I haven't been bothered by fine dust for quite a long time now.
Great video and I think I will also buy up.....in other words a real dust collector/separator. I was recently in Rockler and was asking about this separator. I mentioned that I have the 1HP harborjunk mobile dust collector and wanted to use it with the Dust Right. They told me the CFM's on the HF collector were too much for the Dust Right. I have yet to find where the recommended CFM's are for the dust right. So I am taking a pass on it. Thanks for the video...............
Thanks for the review. Think I'll wait for a real dust collection system. The Harbor Freight one is backordered until Sept at the moment though! Rough year to be buying anything...
My workshop doesn't get a lot of use lately, and I just emptied my Dust Right dust separator & shop vac. My Dust Right was almost as full as yours was in this video, and my 6 gallon Craftsman 5.5HP shop vac was nearly half full, and the filter was as clogged up as yours was as well. I got my Dust Right on sale for $69 about a year and a half ago, and over-all, I honestly am not very happy with it. It does help, but nowhere even close to how well it was advertised. I also have a large Jet dust collector that has been collecting dust in a corner of my shop for quite a while. I got it at an estate sale for $60, and it was unused, still is 🙄 As soon as I can afford to buy one of those high efficiency filters for it, my Dust Right is going to get repurposed as an expensive trash can. I personally have a hard time recommending any inline shop vac dust separator to anyone. Get a proper dust separator with 4 inch hoses and do it right the first time. Don't make the mistake I made.
I purchased a 1hp Delta DC. Much improvement. Also, I purchased a Wen air filter. If you are not ready to upgrade to a DC I would suggest an air filter. Check out some of my newer videos you will see the Wen in the background.
@@SimpleShopCreations Cool. I will. I already have a 16 gallon ridgid shop vac and I'm tired of it getting clogged after a short time. I got a dustopper from HD just today because I needed something quick. I dont know how well it works yet. I'd like to get a DC, but I need to get the budget for it. I'll check out that Wen.
I went the same rout. It was not satisfactory. Sooo I built a cart for this very same bucket and very same shop vac. I closed off the two ports on the lid. I cut another in the center to attach a Dust Deputy Thein type cyclone. Then Home Depot came out with their version of the cyclone to mount on a Homer bucket. So I never bought the expensive dust deputy and used a Homer bucket I already had. This solution is my current setup. Easy to empty the bucket and more often. The real problem is the small hose from the Shop vac. My big power tools need a 4 inch hose. SO now I am looking at the Harbor Freight unit. In the mean time I got a whole lot smarter. I simply role my planer and Bosch Job site saw out on the driveway and clean up out there with the shop vac I can do the same with my router table unit. My Makita Miter saw is still trapped in its enclosure with 90 % of its sawdust. I still need the shop vac on the driveway, but fine particles are not a problem for my lungs. Living in Arizona can have its advantages most of the year. I have watched many Utube videos on sawdust collection for miter Saws, but most were failures or not practical, none have been convincing. Maybe some really smart guy will figure it out?
To all who are still using a shop vac and separator, I suggest looking into an air filter before purchasing a dust collector as the air filter is a huge huge improvement of air quality in your shop. If I knew how much of an improvement, I would of bought the air filter before buying my dust collector. I purchased a Wen which you can see in my newer videos. I also did an unboxing video of the Wen air filter, which can be viewed on my Instagram account.
Guys this is basic physics.. you only want to fill about half way. As the saw dust gets higher in the bucket, the suction port is just going to pull it up. So stop at 5 gallons and empty.
This thing is junk! Extremely hard to open and top lid not tight. Dust get push out from gaps between lid. Spend. I end up buy a $70 30gal drum from Amazon plus the $20 4” kit. Work 10 times better. Not to mention much better quality
Awesome, helpful, no BS, straight to the facts Video !! Good job man !! Great demonstration and video editing as well !!
Thank you so much !!
Thanks for viewing the video.
I love the fact that you have notes and a pointer. It took me back to my youth and attending school. Great information as well

if you are using a shop vac maybe look into an air filter to help clean the fine particles of saw dust from you work area.

Put the Dust Right up for sale. You might get $40 to $60 for the unit. Thanks for viewing the video.

Have you tried it with a bag in the ridged vacuum? Save a little bit of filter life
No I have not. I no longer have the Rockler Separator as I sold it and upgraded to a dedicated DC.
If you install a bag in the shop vac, that should catch a lot of the fines.
I no longer have the dust right. Sold it a while back. Thanks for viewing the video.
Which DC system did you end up replacing the separator with?
I purchased a 1hp Delta DC. Much improvement. Also, I purchased a Wen air filter. If you are not ready to upgrade to a DC I would suggest an air filter. Check out some of my newer videos you will see the Wen in the background.

@MixingGBP I have the Delta DC and the Wen on the Same 15amp breaker. No issues running at the same time.
It looks like you overfilled the separator bucket?
That will happen from time to time whem you forget to check the bucket.
