    I know many viewers enjoy the end of this episode when Stephanie has Brooke thrown in the trash but for me this is another instance of Brad turning them into a sitcom rivalry. And the flashback (18:15) to the original confrontation in Stephanie's office in the Belief storyline is a reminder of a time when the show didn't need such silly sitcom stunts.

      Yes, I feel the same way - Stephanie is being written more and more like a comedic character, and so is Brooke (which, in Brooke's case, seems to be a way of making her get away with villainous dialogue and behavior by telling the viewer not to take it seriously).
      I feel the same about the upcoming haircut scene. Yes, it is hilarious. No, it is not in character for Stephanie.

    A few more similarities between this and the Belief storyline:
    • Macy and Deacon walking into the boardroom at the very end of episode 4116 just as Brooke is about to end the meeting is like when Steve Crown walked into the boardroom just as Brooke was about to sign away her rights to the Belief patent. Both times, Brooke is surprised by the intruder, both times it’s someone she was intimate with, and both times it changes the outcome of the meeting (Brooke decided not to give up Belief back then and Brooke is ousted as CEO now).
    • The Belief storyline occurred simultaneously with Ridge having to choose between Taylor and Brooke and he even got Brooke to sign the contract on the same night he made his decision. And now here Ridge has to decide again only this time he’s romantically interested in Brooke and the choice he has to make is who will be CEO of Forrester Creations. Both times Ridge decided against Brooke: he chose Taylor over Brooke the last time and he chose Eric over Brooke this time.
    • Brooke’s hurt and horror when she realizes Ridge knew about the plan (episode 4117 at the 8 minute 45 second mark) is just like how she felt when Stephanie rubbed it in her face the last time that Ridge got her to sign the Belief contract _before_ he told her was staying with Taylor. Both times Brooke felt betrayed by Ridge’s deception.
    *NB:* Annie and I discussed some other similarities in episode 4112

    *Macy's Pyrrhic Victory*
    This is supposed to be Macy's "red power dress" moment of triumph over Brooke. The red dress recalls Brooke's outfit in the original BeLieF takeover scene from 1993, as well as the last time Macy went to battIe with Brooke and "won" (the karaoke scene from 1999). But for Macy, this scene actually has more in common with her karaoke competition with Brooke than it does with Brooke successfully taking over controI of Forrester Creations.
    In the karaoke scene, Macy attempted to get Brooke to leave when she showed up uninvited at the Insomnia by creating a scene where Brooke "lost" to Macy in a very public way, which is the same thing that happens here. At the coffee house, it was a singing dueI. This time, it is a boardroom vote. Both times, Macy wins and Brooke loses, and as a result Macy believes that the finaI victory is hers.
    But what Macy faiIs to take into account, on both occasions, is the infIuence Brooke has on the Forrester men, which comes into play only after Macy has left the scene, undermining her and allowing Brooke to check mate her in the next move. After Brooke left the Insomnia, she showed up at Thorne's place and managed to separate Macy and Thorne, ultimately winning Thorne for herself. And now, Ridge will compensate for Brooke losing her position at Forrester by giving her controI of Macy's family business instead.
    Macy is not a chess player and doesn't see this coming - she enjoys being "on the winning side for a change", but doesn't realize that the "winning side" isn't actually _hers,_ and that the Forresters will not return the favor she has done to them. In fact, one of them will turn against her. She helped Ridge's father get his company back, and Ridge will repay Macy by taking her mother's company away.
    Macy also Ioses in another, more subtle, way. Until this point, she has maintained her Good Girl archetype (although there has been some ambiguity), but now that she appears to be motivated mainly by revenge, she Ioses that moraI high ground. She is virtually unrecognizable compared to her usual characterization and has lost many of her most positive character traits - her warmth, her forgiving nature, and her candor. And although she deserves to "win" over Brooke, it shouldn't have to be at the expense of losing herself. Over the years, Macy has been a fundamentally good and empathetic person who has consistently treated others better than they treated her, she hasn't schemed or manipuIated, and she hasn't taken any pIeasure in hurting others. And, being a Good Girl, Macy can't lose those character traits without the character disintegrating, which is kind of what is happening here. Macy is changing into a different character and I am not sure if this transition is written well enough to be believable.
    I still think that Macy is _in the right._ She was right to encourage Deacon to see his kids. She was right in helping Eric get control of his company back. If it were any other character I would be cheering them on wholeheartedly (and I am cheering for Stephanie here), but there is just something about Macy's _underlying motivations_ that doesn't quite gel with her previously established character. The funny thing is that the reasons she herself gives for the things she does are still well within Good Girl territory. It's just that she states these reasons unconvincingly - they sound more like her trying to rationaIize motivations that at their core are much darker than she is willing to admit, even to herself.
    And even though Macy has previously shown potential to evolve into a Stephanie-like character, it takes a Stephanie-like complexity in the writing to make this transformation work, and it is not quite there.

    • @NewYorkNick0607
      @NewYorkNick0607 12 часов назад +13

      Great points all around - from the comparison between the karaoke scene and this boardroom scene as well as how Macy is also losing her character distinction. I have to say I really hate that Ridge ends up doing this and I think it's indicative of more bad writing and the show's downward slope.
      First, while it's true that Ridge can be callous and the Forresters often don't care about the Spectras, handing over Sally's company to Brooke when the Forresters' JUST outlined the importance of getting control of their own company away from Brooke AND when Sally's daughter was crucial in making that happen - feels completely unrealistic and overtly cruel. This isn't callousness, this is going out of your way to hurt someone who just saved you and showed you unearned compassion. There's nothing in even Ridge's selfish character history to indicate that he would do this to Macy (whom he has always liked) or to Sally (who he recently worked and became closer with).
      Secondly, it's part of the show beginning to lose its workplace moorings. This started when Ridge went to work at Spectra and now having Brooke run Spectra continues the same decline. From here on, the show will be more loose and comfortable swapping out CEOs and who works at which company and it just makes the companies and the fashion rivalries feel less real. There's a sense that characters and types aren't securely fastened to these iconic places anymore. Ridge as Forrester Royalty and Brooke who wants to be Forrester Royalty should _always_ be at FC. Indeed it's completely out of character for Brooke to work at Spectra because, as I've written before, Brooke has always looked down on Sally and aspires to be an elite (see my post on these class themes in episode 1588).
      Finally, it's a completely unnecessary move. Brooke may be ousted as CEO but she still retains 49% of FC! That means she has significant financial interest and stakes in the company so how can she go run a _rival_ company? Isn't there a major conflict of interest there? Even without the CEO position, Brooke has way more money and power and mooring at Forrester than she ever did before the Belief patent. With her stock and her children, she's secure in the company, in the family orbit, and on the show. There's no reason to send her to Spectra. And in terms of the Bill Bell "balance" you mentioned in a previous post, I'd argue this is NOT achieving that balance because Brooke now has Ridge chasing after her romantically. Recall that when she got control of Forrester in 1993, she had lost Ridge and so the balance there was losing romantically but gaining money and power. What Brad is doing here is another version of letting Brooke have too much and everything - she gets Ridge pursuing her and she _still_ gets to be a CEO. I'd argue a balance had already been achieved by Brooke losing control of FC because that restored things to the Bill Bell position where Stephanie has one thing (the company) and Brooke has the other (Ridge). And as I said before, with a 49% stake it's not like she wouldn't still have security and reason to be at Forrester Creations.

    • @annieo6527
      @annieo6527 11 часов назад +3

      @@NewYorkNick0607 Great points! You make a strong case for how the balance isn't restored after all because Brooke still has too much, and I agree with you. The balance I was referring to was between Brooke and Macy, who have two "areas of confIict" where they have confrontations (Deacon's children and the business aspect), and where Macy ends up winning Little Eric away from Brooke's family, while Brooke wins Spectra Fashions away from Macy's family. Of course, this balance would have been more convincing if the child in question had been _Hope_ instead of Little Eric, since Brooke is only indirectly involved with Little Eric (and the show has chosen to redirect that loss from Brooke to Amber, who was _not_ the one who actually deserved to lose her child, as I described in episode 4090). And it is does feel like this would have been a natural way for this rivaIry to continue - with the stakes being Hope and Spectra Fashions - but for some reason Bell chose not to go there (maybe to avoid having Brooke Iose?).

He submitted his vote, got the hell out of there, and then rightfully told Macy to basically leave them all to fight each other. He was actually the most adult person in the room.
