I'm using the BLCU HSK standard course, new practical chinese reader and integrated chinese textbook series concurrently. Integrated Chinese seems the best so far, but I really think using multiple textbooks is by far the best approach, and it probably doesn't matter that much - as long as the book has easy to use audio, useful texts/dialogues and doesn't get extremely bogged down in grammar, it should be fine.
You are right about the fact that the Chinese textbooks published in China are not that interesting. Just open up any Chinese learning textbook published in US and UK and one can tell the difference. Moreover, they are coming from their native point of view, making learning overwhelming especially for beginners whose mother tongue is linguistically distant from Chinese. So if you are really going to publish a book about learning Chinese to learners who speak English, then I suggest you take reference from books published outside of China as well. Other factors to consider include the varying learning needs of learners residing and working In different countries and regions.
Right finished “Road to Success 2” provided by the Confucius Institute. It got also the Beijing Language ... label. Additionally I try to learn every day the lessons of my language calendar. And of course watching RUclips videos such like yours to improve listening skills or learning methods. :)
Very interesting video to peek into what is sold in China to learn the language! I love textbook reviews. I find Integrated Chinese awesome cause it has tons of audio & teaches you read characters. I plan to buy more books from them and possibly join Chinese Podcast once I reach a B1-2 reading/listening level. I don't use apps but since I teach English I love telling my students about them. I don't worry about speaking, that'll come in a couple of years from now
Compared with English, the grammar of Chinese and English is 95% similar. The key is that Chinese words does not need variation in tense. We only need to add words such as "已经(already), 了(already done )" to the sentence without changing the words into different words tense. So chinese is much easy than english !
