- Every guitar building workshop needs many tools but the #1 tool is really indispensable. Without a doubt building guitars without a router would be so much more difficult. See how it is used to build great sounding guitars. This #1 tool is used for the binding, purflings and shell inlay as well as on the guitar neck for the truss rod. For me, this is the #1 indispensable tool.
Q&A It is time to submit your questions for Tea Time with Monty where we will answer as many questions as possible. And for the record...you do ask great questions. Thanks!

I received a router as a gift many years ago with "basic router bits." I thanked the gift giver graciously and his reply was. "Don't thank me yet. Wait until you realize you want new bits." I didn't know what he meant until I wanted more. The joy and pain of woodworking.
I had a similar experience with cameras and lenses lol.
Enjoy the tea and thank you Monty.
I understand
My Dad's tool box has multiples of many many tools. When Dad passed away in Feb 2016, she asked me what tools to keep...I told her all of them. "You may not need all of them at one individual time, but there are purposes for each." Amusingly enough, she has actually used different versions of some tools (larger, smaller, etc) over the last few years. :D
I have had the same experience with my father-in-law's tools. I use them all the time. I haven't built one guitar without using his tools.
I get far more excited at the sight of a router than a pair of shoes.
When I start to worry that I am spending too much money on my model airplanes and all the tools and specialized parts I need to create them, I go to a car show. Those guys have more money tied up in a manifold or a paint job than all of my tools and yours put together Monty. Doesn't that make you feel better? Oh and remember that box of router bits... "I think those cost $35ish" (CND too) That's your testimony. Keep making these great videos about tools!!! I think your hobby and mine is just a necessary front to getting to have a great collection of tools.
Great vid, Monty. Like the little history lesson.
Merci
Wonderful, interesting information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Welcome!
I like your reasoning! Good luck with the negotiations😂
Thanks!
I feel like an underprivileged child, I only have one DeWalt router. But I did catch a really nice router table from Rockler to mount the router into. You are right though it is the router bits that really cost you.
...and you need to keep them clean.
Great video as always! I would love to get into guitar making, but wow, it seems to require a lot of money. I'll be doing well enough just to end up with a decent guitar one day. Hey, I love this video's thumbnail design!
It is more costly than I thought it would be. Thanks for your support.
Great work. Now on to the important things; where do I get a cup like that?? :-)
I have a cup down below which I will be using but the blue one is a one of a kind.
Thanks Monty, it was interesting and leaves me wondering who has more gear You or Peter?
Me for sure...well maybe.
Where's the tea ? I'm switching from Coffee to tea Monty
I realize your son is a bad influence on me
He's a bad influence on me as well. lol He has so much darn talent...I'm jealous! HaHa
@@MontyMcKinnon What's funny is his talent is still maturing . Peter is still learning ...... He will also learn tea is better
Hahahahaha “as many as it takes”
Great motto, Monty. ✌️Keep those bits close, otherwise, you’re going to Tiffany’s. 😬
Thank you for your dedication towards this channel. It is appreciated by your fans.
Thank you so much.
Dang it. Now I need another router.
Maybe I should have less? lol
Never too many tools! :)
Tools are only as good as the person using them and most power tools scare the beJesus out of me. I actually don't have a router per se. I only have a laminate trimmer ($30 at Harbor Freight) and a Dremel. I used the former for making a binding channel cutting jig and it was kind of scary to use. Naturally the jig needs to be refined and my sides are going to end up being awfully thin! I'd love to get my hands on one of LMI's gramils; I love working with chisels. The Dremel I use for inlay and rosettes. I bought the cheap $10 circle cutting jig and it did well enough.
I have made a lot of my jigs and a few tools. They still are fun to use.
In 20 years some luthier will be in a garage with his $100 CNC machine saying “Can you believe they used to use pin and plunge routers...” 😆
You are so right. lol
You have inspired me to get off my butt and turn a long considered idea into a reality. Just beginning my desire to inspire and encourage Joy. Something we all need these days. Website is AMomentofJoy.com.
