    Love their music. Heavy as a freight train, intricate as a spiderweb. Perfect ensemble. They write and perform as if they share a single ego.

    Japan loves the concept of a 'gap'. basically a disconnect between what you see and expect, compared to what you actually experience. so when you see 5 maids walk out on stage, you already have formed an opinion, then they hit you with the sick riffs/chords/licks/fills/vocals and that opinion is no more.

    First got into rock in the early 60s. It was fun music. There was joy and excitement listening to groups. Band-Maid has brought that back into my life with their music. That happiness, it's a debt I can never repay and I love them for it. Great reaction as always. Thank you.

      I’m 38 and after over a decade of cynicism towards new music during the 2010’s and discovering their music in a random movie purely by chance in late 2021, I can say with complete honesty the same thing happened to me. Band-Maid made me love music again. It’s impossible for me to fully articulate that emotion but rest assured they will always have my unwavering gratitude and devotion.

    From Japan Even in Japan, if a cute woman performs in a maid outfit, she will be ridiculed. That was the case with BAND-MAID at first. They tried to overturn that with their performance. They have to prove that they are a real rock band with a live performance. That's how they do it. They say that when the band was unknown, they loved seeing the audience surprised when they started playing. They are all masters of playing, but even now they continue to strive to get better and show us new things. At last year's Yokohama Arena, Saiki performed alone on piano for the first time, and started the song with Miku's solo side guitar. Listen to their latest song, Protect You. BAND-MAID will play BAND-MAID Rock.

    • @roqy
      @roqy 3 месяца назад +12

      @toshimatyu6654 Yes. They play the maid game cheerfully, but at it's heart of hearts it is social protest - we'll show you what you expect, but if you think that's what a woman is, think again. The Afterlife music video gives a brief glimpse into the frustration subtext, even being shot where Miku used to work. Yokohama was a serious milestone for them. I bought the Blu-ray and they were on fire. It would be pretty difficult not to take them seriously at this point.

    Well said! I agree with your analysis of the various textures that Misa produces by smoothly mixing picking styles. It's like finding the appropriate spice needed at the right time. There are few bands out there where you feel a genuine honesty to their performance and bliss from the players themselves. They are enjoying the moment as much or even more than the audience. I have been pushing this band onto friends, family and strangers since I first encountered them about 7 years ago and I still feel the same all these years later. It is criminal that they are not bigger than they are. They are a special band that needs to be illuminated.

    🤘Thank you for reacting to it! So good! That bass and the riff! You can see the smiles on all of their faces and if you listen there's a part you can here Saiki and Miku laughing at each other. If you watch that bass breakdown on slomo you can see how effortlessly MISA switches back and forth between picking and not picking.

    That " Menthol Sound, " Man, only Eric, you nailed it as usual. I get it. MISA, especially is just mesmerizing. I'm not a musician but her base tone, and whole stage persona are just so captivating! I can hear her play all day. Band Maid is slowly taking over my play list.
    As for the maid outfits. I believe it's just a cultural thing that these Japanese musicians see themselves as performers and these special outfits as they call them, their stage armors provide them a collective identity. Almost all of these Japanese bands have them. Even if they preform in more casual attires as the Western bands like Nemophila, the whole band usually came out in some theme that's instantly identifiable for their band. Most fans of the Japanese music hardly pay any attention to what they wear. Anyone who dwell on their outfits would instantly out them as some music novice. They just are not worthy of any attention.

    I find it interesting, and I’m sure I’m not alone in this, there are people out there who think we Band-Maid fans watch them because they’re cute in the maid costumes. When they started coming on my feed 10 yrs ago I initially didn’t give them a listen to because of what they were wearing in that initial picture used for “Thrill.” I thought they were another JPop band and I wasn’t interested in that style of music. The first video I watched was their live performance of “Play” and boy did my jaw hurt after dropping to the ground so hard. I’ve been 100% invested in them ever since! 🤟🤟🤟🤟

    I my opinion the lyrics mean "Don't depend on God only to solve your problems, you have got to put forth an effort as well." Whether or not that's the message, I do believe there is a God for giving us this wonderful assemblage of five immensely talented, petite Japanese females and the wonderful music they have given us. The serendipity of how all five of them came together is remarkable.

    Eric, thank you once again for your thoughtful comments. I said ‘elsewhere’ that in many ways these ladies remind me of RUSH. They strive for perfection (but knowing it can’t be reached) having fun performing amongst themselves (which translate to the audience excuse me -Masters and Princesses). And especially an appreciation of their audience and letting the audience 😏know. Longer comment than you may have wanted but still a ‘comment’.

      Like most Westerners, I had no idea what a Maid Cafe was and how they treat those girls. I try to explain to folks here that it would be like if 5 hot American chicks did punk/thrash/metal while dressed in Hooters gear. There is another song I've featured "Tokyo Calling" by a band I can't remember, who also is doing an "against social norms" type, but looks campy to Western viewers. But when you take time to research the work culture in Japan, you'll realize the pressure all these kids are under to perform, regardless of task. Plus Japan's trains are sick!!
      Cheers,
      Eric
