I changed my fishing ways to catch and release after watched your tv series and haven't stopped especially when Qld hasn't implemented fishing licenses. Love your work Starlo!
Hi Starlo I was one of those fishos in the audience in Hobart that night and will never forget the look of satisfaction and enjoyment in your eyes when you asked the audience has anyone caught a trout on a sqidgy yet ?I couldn’t get my hand up quick enough to say yes , I started using them weightless amongst the trees at Arthur’s were we had our shack , just letting them flutter down couple of small twitches looking for that tick in the line , such a great great way to fish , thanks mate for all your fishing contributions and love the chat 😊
Starlo, you and bushy are legends! I still use the wriggler in bloodworm chasing flattys and it's very successful. The bug is also amazing and usually my first go to. Love the chat vids and this background into squidgiee.
Thanks for that Starlo. Been a fan since the days of 'Going for Gold'. Still own my Penn Inters that I bought in the late 80's. I too have been bitten by the soft plastic bug to the extent that I make my own jig heads, jig head molds, soft plastics, soft plastic designs and molds etc... I had a laugh when you mentioned the nail polish thing with Bushy. A decade ago my nail polish collection rivaled that of my wife and daughter put together, to the point that my daughter would go to the garage to pilfer my nail polish collection. (It was used mainly for painting home made wooden hard body lures however.) It really is a whole lot of fun to see local baitfish getting nailed, think I need to make one of those, build a pattern, cast up a silicone mold and roll your own. When you get it right and catch fish with them, the satisfaction is 10 times greater than catching the same fish on a bait.
As one of the old young guys, i worked at Bluewater Tackle in the 90s and used the Bucket O Bait and mister twisters, McGrath Attacks, RMG Scorpions or even a Floppy if you dare take it out of the packet. Now i have crates of soft plastic's for bream and I'm proud to say i still have about 20 packs of Blood Worm Wrigglers. These have been dragged from WA to Vic to QLD to NSW and now back to WA again.
I remember the old Attack lures they were fantastic and the bream loved the pink ones. Lol I can relate to buying nail polish I have and even some makeup experimenting with it on lures. You're a great story teller.👍
brilliant days with those hardbodys I had sold most of them except Ray's lures in Canberra. First did the online thing from Bass pro and Cabela's in the early 80s, so cheap then. Loved those Aberdeen split shot heads before the epoxy ones that Tom now sells. Used my twisters on Wallaga flathead from the 80s too. Those colours like bloodworm, motor oil and watermelon in small plastics magic to use. Few for sale in my local these days with so many others stocked.
I found this chapter most enjoyable and informative. I was slow to catch on and only incorporated SP into my fishing about a decade ago. I haven’t looked back and even though most brands will catch fish my go to for flathead is still the squidgy wriggler. Look forward to next week. Thanks for taking us on this journey
I still remember the first packet of squidgies I got - yellow shads. A present from my older brother who at the time, said to me “fish don’t eat plastic”. Well, I didn’t catch a fish on that particular lure, but thanks to the work of you and Bushy, and the whole team promoting them - I stuck it out and eventually found success on the Flickbait in Flashprawn colour. Pleased to say that I had a camera crew (my father) filming the moment I reeled in my first squidgy-caught fish. And off I went! Cheers Starlo
I used to fish the Berkley Evinrude Teams Series back between 2012-2015 and I was sponsored by Lowrance/Berkley Power Bait. I can say now after 10 or 11 years that I won a BETS round, as well as another series round, and placed many times using 100mm Bloodworm Wrigglers, and the Prawn in Wasabi that came in a pack with the resin heads, smothered in S Factor! Post round interviews were always " can you give us an insight on how you caught the fish?" I would always say Berkley 2 inch Camo Shrimp or Watermelon Pearl Bass minnows, which in their own right were fantastic lures. Good old days!
These Tuesday chats are awesome Steve, providing a lot of memories for a lot of us. I remember when I first started with soft plastics, back then there were really only 2 options to buy - Squidgies and Berkley Gulp. I always found I did a lot better on flathead with the Squidgie shads than anything else. Both you and Bushy revolutionised the way so many Estuary anglers fish and big Dusky Flathead haven't been safe since you guys introduced soft plastics to Australia. Something both of you should be very proud of for a long time!
@ Mate, I could watch your videos all day long. Love the passion and the tips. Most of what you share works in NZ. Thanks heaps for taking the time to produce such epic content.
I love squidgies, caught my first flatty on a killer tomato, still have an original squidgies soft plastic wallet full of the very first squidgies, even got some original blood worm. Another great video starlo 💪🎣
Yes i still have those old squidgee vids thats the time i started using soft plastics it was you and bushy that inspired me ive never looked back however i do still use bait live and dead as well as lures thanks for all the info guys.
Hi Starlo love your channel and these chats are a trip down memory lane, love it. I remember seeing you blokes on Corroboree Billabong in the very early 2000’s. It was a highlight of my fishing trips in the top end.
Many times I have stood side by side with a mate boat fishing for flathead. Him using exclusivity 100m Bloodworm Wriggler. Me using any other plastic I choose. I have never out fished him. The only time I do is if I move to the Wriggler also. So I am convinced. Mallacoota.
@ Indeed. He taught me how to fly fish at Jindabyne, although I've never really used it since. Dad and I spent a lot of time with him at the Narooma tournaments in the late 70s and early 80s, and Dad worked in his Belconnen shop in the 90s
My goodness. I actually bought the Soft Plastics Bucket of Bait way back when. Manns brand I believe. Ah yes the dreaded Glitter! Coming home to the Missus covered in it and getting accused of cavorting with strippers 🤣Made worse still by getting the tackle box to prove it and she sees how many plastics you have 😱I'm loving these informative nostalgia triggering "chats".
Hey Steve, did you ever do any research with Shimano on the ecological impact of soft plastics in the environment, how they break down and effect the food chain over time? I can see birds dying from plastics that look like fish that get left in the environment.
We put a fair bit of time into all that and also did heaps of research on “biodegradable” stuff. Turns out a lot of it simply “bio-erodes” into micro plastics rather than actually breaking down to its constituent elements. Best advice as with any plastics used in fishing, from bait bags and lure wrappers to monofilament line, is to minimize loss in the environment and bring your rubbish home. Birds and other animals can only ingest soft lures if they are lost or discarded by anglers.
Tuesday chats are excellent mate. Would love to hear an episode on the stiffy lures to partner with the squidgies phenomenon. The stiffy popper is still the best whiting popper I’ve ever used, wish I could find a few more around haha
My first fish on lure was using the squidgie fish killer tomato was a dusky flathead got a few that day have been hook since i recon that was in 2008 , another asweome video love the stories
I still use them till this day. The amount of species I've caught is incredible. All i want shimano to do is bring back the flash prawn flickbaits. I used to nail soo many fish a day on them
Best Squidgie of all time was the finesse plastic 110mm Flickbait in flash prawn colour... with yellow green glitter, original green packet one before the plain pro range ... still have a packet ... this soft plastic back in 2007 i think caught me consistently big flathead in the estuarys than any other' very passionate about this lure... should be remade, i used to 1/8weight & also OG resin heads the smaller 90mm was excellent too' still have a brand new GLoomis Dropshot rod never used, just a back up, it was highly sort after rod model & probably still is ...

What a great vid, filled with nostalgia, I'm a breamer like you Bait to now. Still chase bream on lures. Loved watching the reel evolution in this vid. Do a vid on the Stella line in the future, I got my first Stella 2500 F series in the 90's, still have it and it still runs smooth as with over 20 years of breaming on it. Another vid I'd like to see is on the braid revolution, 4lbs Fireline was revolutionary at the beginning of the bream on lures era, still have heaps of it but now use some of the Super braids. I bumped into a couple of young fisho's last night on Emu Point Jetty and as it turned I had some of the early Squidgy Wrigglers rigged, they had no idea of the history of these lures, well done.
To be fair, Shimano needs to update the branding of their Squidgies, it shouldn't matter but it does of course. I feel like the average angler is always searching for that "new development" that will increase their catch rates even though that's often fools gold, I think the branding has a big part of the appearance of this and I would guess that's why daiwas bait junkies have largely surpassed squidgies in Australia , the squidgies brand does seem a little too old school and Bait Junkies just seem like the new cool option.
I guess it comes down to personal opinion and choice. Coke, Vegemite, McDonalds and Apple computers, to name a few, haven’t drastically altered their branding in a long, long time. They seem to go okay. Bait Junkies are fine lures… but will anyone remember them in 25 years? Maybe…
@@StarloGetsReel I don’t doubt their effectiveness one bit. One day when circumstances permit I’ll start wetting a line again, hopefully not in the too distant future, as I have 5 grandkids all need to be taught to fish these days.
Still got a couple of packets Mt twisters and heaps of squidgees love using them fished in the Lachlan near Mt Waabalong Wilanthary caught heaps of yellow belly on them Thank you for this video

I'm yet to find a plastic that fishes like the flick bait. The bio tough... Not a fan. I feel the squidgy hype peaked around 2010-2012, I remember the Facebook page would go off back then, and yes, I remember the time when the bloodworm wriggler colours would come in inconsistent from batch to batch, I would be annoyed myself but as you said, they still caught fish! I've always wondered what a Squidgy wriggler soft vibe would have been like?
