      @user-zn4sr1ll1cTo take a more literal approach, he could be telling Rincewind not to read any long books AS he is hanging from the pole of that tower. As in “you better get your arse down from there real quick”. Knowing Pratchett, and the amount of contempt Death has with Rincewind, it could be both. Man’s got some Final Destination levels of beef.

  • @KingVirus68
    @KingVirus68 11 лет назад +203

    You know I like Terry Pratchett's take on evil. They're about.to do something cruel, malevolent and generally unpleasant to you, and yet they're always so polite about it. Like now for instance (even though death isn't "evil" in a sense).

    • @bdpickett
      @bdpickett 5 лет назад +70

      He's not evil at all. He simply is. It's just that Rincewind is a rather bothersome case, since even Death isn't sure when his time is.

    • @theo-jamesmoulton2000
      @theo-jamesmoulton2000 4 года назад +43

      Death wasn't evil. He just found Rincewind terribly inconvenient because he kept almost dying and then escaping. Death ended up snuffing out mayflies in sheer frustration more than once. That bloody wizard did more harm to the mayfly population by proxy than any other man in history.

      Honestly, this is a pretty inaccurate take on Discworld's Death. Outside of early installment weirdness, he ranges from ambivalent to mildly helpful, and it's not like he goes around killing people. People getting killed is their own business, he just makes sure they die afterwards.

      When he was covering for the Hogfather (Santa Claus) during Hogswatch (Christmas), one of the things Death did was essentially bend his own rules and exploit a loophole to bring the Little Matchstick Girl back to life because he was disgusted with the ending. That's probably my favorite moment regarding the Death of Discworld, because it shows exactly who he is at his core.
      ruclips.net/video/zvwYCbBWxT8/видео.htmlfeature=shared
      But, yeah, there's a reason why Death went from a running gag in one book to one of the franchise's most beloved characters.

  • @MrNullcast
    @MrNullcast 12 лет назад +170

    Rincewind is sorta Death's hobby as I've heard in described. Thanks to his unknown-to-him status as [redacted] his hourglass actually looks a bit like a klein bottle or sphere eversion process. Death doesn't know his appointed time and so tends to take a special curious interest when he's in danger.

    Eric Idle does a good job as Death's voice with this game, but I prefer Christopher Lee from the animated Discworld films.

    Death's personality in the first book with Rincewind was rather different from later books. I think Pratchett was still developing his style and characters back then. Since, Death has become a different and a lot more sympathetic person.

    • @avosmash2121
      @avosmash2121 9 месяцев назад +9

      I like thinking both characterizations of Death are canon. Death just started out like a nine to five indifferent bitter jaded longtime worker, then found a new 'customer' who should have been just yet another victim to his routine. But instead Rincewind never died, so, at first he found him confusing, weird, and a pain in the ass, being an obstacle to his job. Then as novelty wore off, he became a temporary fixation as the annoyance grew into increasing exasperation, then into fast rapid morphing into genuine fascinated curiousity (grr, you don't die, why won't you die?!....huh. ....Hm. Why WON'T you die??...hmm..) into mild distant fondness for the fact he poses a unique challenge into something so normally concrete and inevitably the same for everyone else. Death never sees anything change, and for once he does, and it is refreshing and amusing to him once his initial confused ire wears off. And that's where the more kinder, mellower, more introspective Death we all later appreciate and know comes out of.

    • @JeshuaMorbus
      @JeshuaMorbus 3 года назад +9

      That's because he doesn't get him at all. Once, he saw Rincewind hourglass and certified that he, after being blasted by all kinds of magical forces and supernatural occurrences, Death itself is unable to know how much he will live XD

    • @Ribyum
      @Ribyum 7 месяцев назад +2

      Rincewind's life hourglass looks a lot more like a klein's bottle shape or something. Nevertheless, it is impossible for Death to know Rincewind's exact appointed hour, which is a rather troublesome case. That is why Death has a particular interest in him whenever he finds himself in potentially deadly situations.

  • @KetchupSplodge

    @Highstar25 Actually in the first Rincewind book (which this game is lossely based on, mixing it with Guards! Guards!), Death was a bit of a jerk. He killed a few animals with a heart attack because he was angry for not getting Rincewind and tried to kill him himself more than once. Not only until Mort his personality was fully established as it is now.

  • @Highstar25

    Wizards have the honor of being claimed personally by Death? In the books how Death works changes over time. In one book it says that souls have a buoyancy of good and evil, and either sink or ascend on their own, only requiring Death's personal attention when a soul is balanced and won't go either direction without aid. Another books says that Death personally attends to the final moments of every living thing, every last one of them. From the tiniest most insignificant worm on the bottom of the sea floor, to Great A'tuin itself, Death is there for all because Death can exist in multiple places at once. I loved the Discworld books (I preferred the books about the Ankh-Morpork city watch over the books about Death), but Pratchett wasn't big on continuity.

    • @ItzAnOrk
      @ItzAnOrk Год назад

      Wizards and Witches being personally claimed by Death is entirely consistent, though. They also know when it'll happen ahead of time. This makes them basically unphased by danger: If it's not their appointed time, they are going to survive - and if it is, well there's no helping it.
      Rincewind -doesn't- know his appointed time because he's barely a wizard at all - and has been entangled with so much cosmic oddness that his lifetimer is more like an abstract sculpture. Death has to show up (repeatedly) because he -might- die, but neither of them knows if he actually will.
